We've heard so much about anti-incumbent rage that maybe we came to expect it in yesterday's primaries. It's a danger of the media; that they latch onto something and play it for all it's worth. Even now, the internet is full of how anti-incumbent rage "skipped" Blance Lincoln, and little if anything about the fact that there WAS virtually none shown in the results.
Quote:

Many pundits hailed this election year as the Year of Anti-Incumbency, but that phenomenon barely surfaced in Pennsylvania’s legislative races in Tuesday’s primary. All but one of the 28 contested House and Senate incumbents seeking re-election came away winners.

Where was the anger that Pennsylvanians were spewing last fall over the 101-day budget impasse? Where were the people who in poll after poll give the General Assembly low approval ratings? Where was the kick-all- the-bums-out spirit that tea party activists incited?

How in the world could two incumbent lawmakers who face charges in the attorney general’s Capitol corruption investigation — state Reps. Bill DeWeese and John Perzel — survive an election when another candidate was on the ballot?

Turnout was one factor that has been cited.

“A lot of people think their vote doesn’t make a difference and no matter who they send, they get the same result” so they don’t vote, Madonna said.

Three out of four registered voters were no-shows on Tuesday.

From her stops at polling places on Tuesday, Rep. Sheryl Delozier, R-Cumberland, said she didn’t sense any overwhelming anti-incumbent venom.

Rather, she said voters expressed frustration and concern about transportation and pension funding problems facing the state, as well as questions about whether the state will pass a budget on time this year.

“Will that frustration mount if it’s late and will that have an effect on the outcome in November — I don’t know,” she said.

The fact is, only two incumbents lost last night: A guy nobody's heard of, Representative Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) will probably lose his seat, pending the result of a forthcoming run-off. And Governor Jim Gibbons lost his re-election bid, which was more about

Leering imbecile and national embarrassment Jim Gibbons has certainly made his mark on Nevada — what with the bungled rape attempts and death threats and public divorce war with his hilarious wife and the Mexican slaves hidden in his basement and his inept corruption and basically not showing up to work for his entire term .

The Lamestream Media strikes again. I guess we need to remember, once again, that the media will try to tell US what's happening, rather than us telling THEM.

It may be more insidious than that Niki.

1) The media says there's all this anti-incumbent rage that's going to make a big affect at the polls.

2) people who are angry about incumbents are satisfied by this and don't show up.

3) people who still want the incumbents in office like their friends and business partners, or who wanted to vote on some citizen proposition and don't really care who's in office reelect the incumbent.

The media understands and uses complacency and a tries to sow a sense of security in these matters all the time. Fox News actually helps the democratic party, even as it pisses off liberals.

Sigh...you're probably right. The fact that it's reported the way it is on the internet bums me out, since I look there for my news, and it's invaded even that source. Bah...

They also noted in the article that money plays a big part, and influence, and incumbents usually have both in larger quantities.

Not that I want to see it, mind you; I'm more afraid of newbies at this point in time, given many of them might end up being Tea Party ideologues which will just make things worse, I just wish they'd give up on that particular little gem and let the elections play out as they will...I know, silly me!

Byte, I think it's probably LESS insidious than all that.

Networks are chasing ratings, pure and simple. Rage and anger get ratings. Running a top story, "Incumbents Win!" doesn't sound very reassuring to an angry bunch of people who say they WANT the bums thrown out, so the headline story and its entire editorial slant get changed to "Anger at the Polls!" or some such.

All they have to show is ONE incumbent being "thrown out", and they've shown the rage and anger that's driving the moneychangers from the temple, so to speak. If they don't mention the 52 incumbents (100% of incumbents on the ballot) in California who won their races, and ONLY focus on the embattled sitting Governor in Nevada, then they really can create the headline that voters are mad as hell, and aren't going to take it anymore.

In a similar vein, Sarah Palin says her method for picking who to endorse is to "pick the underdog" - and often enough, that "underdog" just happens to have a 27-point lead before her endorsement! And if she only crows about the candidates she endorsed who WON, and not about the ones who went down in flames, she creates her own illusion of being a winner and a king-maker, when the truth is, she's neither.

Wulfie, my boy, I can see you have nothing pertinent to add.

Why can't you free your mind from party affiliation? We are discussing the rage against the incumbents here, the rage we've been hearing about for the last two years, and have yet to see in any kind of meaningful numbers once the polls close.

And all YOU want to talk about is "libs and progs"...

What on EARTH has any of that to do with "anti-incumbent rage"?? They're saying that about ALL incumbents, Republican AND Democrat, and that "outsiders" have the edge against Washington insiders, as in "incumbents".

Geez, you can't get your head out of your OWN "partisan jihad" long enough to discuss a topic which ISN'T about Democrats or liberals? That's truly astonishing...

At least try to post something somewhat relevant to the topic at hand, rather than just spewing. If that's possible?

I hope you're right, Mike. I know the old saw that "if it bleeds, it leads", and that the Tea Party and their "uprising" are news, I just wish they'd cut it out. I know, silly gel, eh?
