The troops in Germany will always be there. It's a takeoff point for troops all over the world, and that's where people are flown for medical care, etc. We went to the commissary there once (dad's retired Navy) and it was amazing; HUGE, with stuff from all over Germany, beautiful stuff. My mom fell for dresden figurines and bought many, I always loved them as a kid, they were so delicate and beautifull.

We'll always be in Germany, as long as they let us stay (and I imagine they always will; it's good for the local economy and of course we have close ties).

Hello,

Niki, as much as you love our German facility, I think we can draw down most of the 52,000 troops there.

If we pull folks from Afghanistan and Iraq, that lovely German hospital will see less use, too.

A large German facility exists as a waypoint to warzones I no longer want to be involved in. If we really need medical facilities in an area, we can send a hospital ship. If it's more complicated than that, we can pay a local five star hospital to take in our few super-critical-needs-whizbang-tech patients.

Sorry you misunderstood. I wasnt intending to DEFEND our being in Germany, just describe its function a bit as a way of saying "It ain't going anywhere". I, too, would love to see us get out of wars, but I recognize that our German jump-off point will always be around, given it's been there and BIG since I was there, thirty years ago. It's convenient for the families of soldiers who are stationed overseas, and I'm sure Germany benefits from it; ergo, it stays.

I suspect that iraqbodycount is suspect. I was counting when they were counting and their count didn't count up so fast so I don't think it don't think it counts.

Anyway I suspect we're all agreed. Whozit has a point too. It's like Clinton's wars. Obamas wars are not news. I blame both sides: The left is less capable of attacking its own guy (present company accepted) and the right is unwilling to attack the president on military issues, which it should, rather than some of the mamby pamby stuff they actually do pull.

So question. If the U.S. wasn't in the country, and part of the task force helping Iraq sort out the government here post election, would we have had this bombing?

Maybe? I don't know. This is the problem with extremists, they blow stuff up, but they don't really make clear why. Could be any number of things, couldn't it? US. Occuption, protest against puppet government, minority vs. majority, Iranian border hoppers, protest against Israel...?

I'm pretty sure the bombing would not have taken place.

The US funds and arms the terrorists, either intentionally or not, through loose weapons policies and permissive interference from other Mideast powers.

If we were to vacate, Iran would take over overnight, and be welcomed by the vast majority of Iraqis, excepting the al Qaeda types like we were just talking about in the other thread. OTOH, iran is fairly no nonsense re al Qaeda, So I don't think it will be much of a threat.

Ironically, it's not our puppet govt. It's one thing I have to give Bush, as much as I'm surprised to say so. He set up three democracies: Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. 2 of the 3 appear to be functional democracies, which fewer than 15% of the worlds democracies are.

I read this definition of a functional democracy which I'm using:

1) A candidate without strong support cannot be declared victor in an election
2) no candidate can get more than 70% of the vote.

I'd like to see an additional stipulation that outsid candidates can win elections, but hey, you go to the polls with the democracy you have, not the democracy you might want.

Oh, 2) above is a curious one. It turns out to be statistically impossible. I wouldn't have thought so, but as you pass 50% your support radically diminishes, plus, you have zero incentive to bolster it, whereas opposition support increase, and they have every reason to work on it. Essentially, everyone opposes tyranny is the basic idea, but the statistics bear it out. There are some notable democracies that fail by this measure, such as Russia, Egypt, ethiopia and south Africa. Of course, given that those are the failures, there's no reason to assume the statistical analysis is wrong ;)
