Sharron Angle has resorted to an unusual maneuver to counter Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's attacks on her past quotes and positions, the Reid campaign has announced: A cease-and-desist letter, demanding that Reid no longer republish Angle's previous campaign website.

The short version of the story is as follows: After the former state Rep won Nevada's Republican Senate primary, Angle's campaign took down most of its website, and later replaced it with a relaunched version that in some ways toned down her right-wing rhetoric. But Internet pages are rarely ever forgotten -- the Reid campaign saved the old version, and put up a website called "The Real Sharron Angle," reproducing the old content.

Then, they say, the Angle campaign sent them a cease-and-desist letter, claiming misuse of copyrighted materials in the reposting of the old website -- which was, of course, being posted for the purposes of ridiculing Angle. The Reid campaign has in fact taken down the site, rerouting visitors to another website that goes after Angle's positions, "Sharron's Underground Bunker."

The Reid campaign said in a press release:
Quote:

Despite her threat of a frivolous lawsuit, Nevada voters can still learn about her long-held policy positions at www.sharronsundergroundbunker.com.

"These are Sharron Angle's positions in Sharron's own words from Sharron's own website. What was good enough for Nevada voters to read during the primary should be good enough for them now," said Reid campaign spokesman Jon Summers. "Sharron has long believed in killing Social Security, eliminating the Departments of Education and Energy and shipping nuclear waste to Nevada. We've always heard that Sharron Angle is an unapologetic conservative. It has to be embarrassing for her to have her handlers trying to hide who she really is.

"We asked Reid campaign deputy communications director Zac Petkanas whether, by taking down the "Real Sharron Angle" site, they were admitting the legitimacy of the complaint. "While we do not necessarily agree with the Angle campaign's assertions, a point is made," said Petkanas. "Sharron Angle is hiding her views from Nevada voters."

The Angle campaign has not returned our request for comment.

I managed to find the original, "The Real Sharron Angle", at http://www.therealsharronangle.com/index.html Don't know how long it will stay up, but I've saved a copy in case it goes down. See what you think, and compare it to her NEW website: http://www.sharronangle.com/ MUCH classier...here's the comparative page on the issues, where her stances have been modified for the "general public": http://www.sharronangle.com/issues

Velly intelesting...Poor baby; yet another neophite discovering how dangerous it is for your REAL positions to become public!

DREAMTROVE

Lol,

Reid doesn't realize that Angle's supporter's actually like those positions. I read the page: That's sad. I like his argument for the dept of ed: "We have a horrible school system! don't change it!"

He deserves to lose, but alas, he can misappropriate endless resources from his office to stay in office. Ah, corruption, long may you reign.

Keep the Shiny side up

In Sunday's Washington Post George Will's editorial noted that Reid's supporters spent a good bit of money paying for negative ads against Angle's Republican opponent in the primary.

FREMDFIRMA

I think it's a smart move - mind that I don't care for either of em, but ripping the polite mask off and showing the truth of these kinda folk is a damned good tactic, letting them hang themselves.

But it works both ways, too - remember, in a shit throwin contest it never quite matters how much ya throw, as how much STICKS...

Of course her supporters like her original ad, DT, how do you think she won the nomination? Trouble is, with stances like those, you can't win a general election, and she knows it. So she's smoothed over, back tracked, modified, etc. everything, as any good politician SHOULD and does.

I'm no fan of Harry Reid, but I'm even LESS a fan of hard-core right-wing nutcases, which I think she is, along with several other Tea Bag Hateriots this season.

On the very face of it: How do you file a cease-and-disist order to keep someone from posting your original campaign website without looking really stupid and like you have something to hide?? Until now, the olny people who knew much about it were Reid and HIS followers...now it's all over the news and people are LOOKING for it.

That's smart politics? That's naive scrambling to hide how "out there" you "were" before. I think the people have a right to read the old one; given that's the "platform" she advertised, what's she got to hide about those beliefs?

Here's the problem in a nutshell, as I see it:
Quote:

The handful of Tea Party-backed candidates who've had successful primary wins now face an ideological dilemma - and potential backlash - as they retool for a general election campaign.

Do they stick to their far-right agenda and trust that their conservative credentials will carry them to victory in November, or do they move ahead with a more mainstream, politically expedient message?

"The old, cynical conventional wisdom in politics is that in the Republican Party, you run to the right to win the nomination and then you run to the center to win the general election, and the opposite is true for the Democratic Party," said John Avlon, author of "Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America."

"What's going to be challenging is that the Tea Partiers ran as ideological warriors attacking the establishment with a refusal to compromise on their principle. ... That makes any pragmatic move to the center a lot more complicated for them to do with any credibility," he said.

Candidates supported by the Tea Party, which is a conservative movement and not a political party, have come under fire from supporters and opponents for moves viewed as plays to the center.

You don't win a general with a far-anything agenda, but you don't keep your base WITHOUT one. So which way will they go?

I can't say; given some of those who won primaries are ideologues, I don't know how many will cow-tow to more centrist positions to get elected. For a while there I was hearing that the Tea Baggers didn't CARE if they won generals, that they just wanted to make a stand...so...?
