The oil has stopped. For now. After 85 days and up to 184 million gallons, BP finally gained control over one of America's biggest environmental catastrophes Thursday by placing a carefully fitted cap over a runaway geyser that has been gushing crude into the Gulf of Mexico since early spring.

Though a temporary fix, the accomplishment was greeted with hope, high expectations — and, in many cases along the beleaguered coastline, disbelief. From one Gulf Coast resident came this: "Hallelujah." And from another: "I got to see it to believe it."

If the cap holds, if the sea floor doesn't crack and if the relief wells being prepared are completed successfully, this could be the beginning of the end for the spill. But that's a lot of ifs, and no one was declaring any sort of victory beyond the moment.

The oil stopped flowing at 3:25 p.m. EDT when the last of three valves in the 75-ton cap was slowly throttled shut. That set off a 48-hour watch period in which — much like the hours immediately after a surgery — the patient was in stable, guarded condition and being watched closely for complications.

"It's a great sight," said BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles, who immediately urged caution. The flow, he said, could resume. "It's far from the finish line. ... It's not the time to celebrate."

Nevertheless, one comforting fact stood out: For the first time since an explosion on the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 workers April 20 and unleashed the spill 5,000 feet beneath the water's surface, no oil was flowing into the Gulf.

Well, my fingers are crossed, too, but it's sure purty:

Hell, why didn't David Vitter just go down there with his hookers and his diapers and soak all the oil up?

I definitely thik you're right about the "at least", and unquestionably it will stretch beyond the US. But we didn't feel any result of the awful Gulf spills/leaks/etc. after the Iraq War, did we? And Gulf states saying "oh, we have tar balls washing up now and again all the time" is probably at least partly a result of the (now second biggest) leak down in Mexico, so I wonder how much it WILL impact anyone but us (and Mexico, no doubt...)

I dunno. What I've heard when the question was asked is that they had no plan for such a situation, so had no remedies immediately available (BP that is), so couldn't have done it sooner.

Of course, that might not mean anything, but I can't be convinced BP WANTED this, nor Obama, despite the conspiracy theorists and rightie politicians.

There's far more proof ( you never want to let a serious crisis go to waste ) that Obama wanted this to continue than Bush/ Cheney orchestrated 9/11 or blew the levees in New Orleans.

And yet, for the Left, those 2 themes were a constant drum beat, through out Bush's 2nd term. And let's not forget to add the BUSH LIED crap.

If you think the Right has no moral authority on this matter, then you're flat out nuts. *correction* nuttier than I already knew.

Krishna onna crotch rocket*, Crappy, you make the same false claims as if they hadn't already been debunked, a couple of times.
Quote:

Bush/ Cheney orchestrated 9/11 or blew the levees in New Orleans.
Certainly nobody HERE makes those claims (except maybe PN, and he's certainly not on the lefT!), and I haven't heard them made by more than conspiracy theorists--in fact I'd never heard the "bush blew the levees" thing until you brought it up.

So give us proof that Obama wanted this to continue. Actual proof, not what you want to believe. This will always be pegged as "Obama's Katrina" and worse; how that helps him I can't imagine, plus it definitely HAS NOT HELPED his cap and trade push, if that's what you mean. So proof, please, and please stop the bullshit about "for the Left, those 2 themes were a constant drum beat", because that's in your head, not in the real world. No "leftist" here is saying it or believes it; VERY FEW "leftists" out in the real world do, and they're nutbags; to claim they/we do is just a plain fullisade of jerkass rhetoric*!!!

I kinda get it now; you make an accusation/claim; it gets disproven; you keep on making it. Bringing up that accusation that Mike "inserted" the word in that quote is another example--we clearly showed that it cannot be proven that he did, or that you took it out, yet it's a claim you've stashed away to bring out when convenient. It's irksome that you aren't capable of letting these things go once you've been proven wrong or there is no proof either way, and terribly boring.

I freely and willingly agree that gross incompetence surrounded the administration's response to the Gulf Gusherfuck.

I reject that Obama himself WANTED the leak to continue for any reason whatsoever.

If that's good enough for you, then we are in agreement on that point. There's no WAY I would dispute that the government moved to slowly, made bad decisions or fucked up badly. I merely do not believe it was a conspiracy or that it was solely Obama's personal responsibility.

I don't believe the government or BP, but I believe PN even less. That website, as well, is a conspiracy bullshit site with "Illuminati" crap, so I'm not buying the videos at this time. I don't even know where they were taken.

The pressure was at 6,700--6,000 is the bottom line which would indicate leaks. They are still checking, and wondering if the thing has begun to play itself out or something. Time will tell, but the last thing I'll ever do is take PN at his word or believe his assinine websites without confirmation from a reliable source...or one I can at least believe MIGHT be credible.

That website also says:
Quote:

I believe it is time to leave the gulf coast in case the sea floor expands then collapses delivering a tsunami to the region.
Decide for yourself.

I'd rather not read PN's bullshit, but some of it I feel forced to read in order to check it out and refute it where it is an obvious lie or seriously questionable.

I don't remember anyone ever saying Bush blew the levees. I remember several people saying that the levees were known to be weak and that the Bush administration opted not to fix them because it would be too expensive. Was it known that the pump was weak? Was aide fixing it before it blew ever requested of the current administration? I don't remember hearing that.
The red tape that had to be cut through in order for anything to be done in this situation was ridiculous. Red tape in a state of emergency is just stupid, it should be eliminated, no question. It should have been bypassed, no question. Then again, if it had been bypassed by executive order or something, there would be all kinds of bleating about Obama abusing his power. Poor guy feels like he has to do everything by the book and tiptoe on the eggshells. He shouldn't bother; there are plenty of people who will scream no matter what he does, and trying to please everyone just makes him less effective.

Not true, and it wouldn't have mattered any way. The original design was flawed, so any retro fitting of the levees would have accomplished exactly nothing. An engineer team from LSU established that fact.

And I don't know which " pump " you're referring.

Raptor is right about the design, I BELIEVE the Corps of Engineers was said to be at fault in the very beginning.

Yes to the red-tape problem, definitely. The difference between the two was that Dumbya was warned, from several different sources, of the danger and ignored it--maybe if he'd listened, something could have been done; maybe not. Maybe if he'd taken it seriously, the efforts would have been baster and more effective; maybe not. The basic premise is true in both situations; getting the government to move at anything like a decent pace in the event of an unprecedented (or even big, precedented!) disaster is pissing in the wind.

And in response to the failed BOP, who really knows ? That seems to be well outside the direct control of the Federal Gov't, but I can't say, either way on that matter.

All I know is that it was the Obama administration that approved of the drilling by the DWH. Not Bush.

Quote:

Obama Administration Knew About Deepwater Horizon 35,000 Feet Well Bore, Green-Lighted And Fast-Tracked Project

Submitted by Wayne Madsen of www.OilPrice.com

Obama Administration Knew About Deepwater Horizon 35,000 Feet Well Bore

President Obama and Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates were informed that BP would drill an unprecedented 35,000 feet well bore at the Macondo site off the coast of Louisiana. In September 2009, the Deepwater Horizon successfully sunk a well bore at a depth of 35,055 below sea level at the Tiber Prospect in the Keathley Canyon block 102 in the Gulf of Mexico, southeast of Houston.

During the September drilling operations, the Deepwater Horizon drill penetrated a massive undersea oil deposit but BP's priorities changed when the Macondo site in the Mississippi Canyon off the coast of Louisiana was found to contain some 3-4 billion barrels of oil in an underground cavern estimated to be about the size of Mount Everest. It was as a result of another 35,000 feet well bore sank by the Deepwater Horizon at the Macondo site that the catastrophic explosion occurred on April 20.

According to the Wayne Madsen Report (WMR) sources within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Pentagon and Interior and Energy Departments told the Obama Administration that the newly-discovered estimated 3-4 billion barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico would cover America's oil needs for up to eight months if there was a military attack on Iran that resulted in the bottling up of the Strait of Hormuz to oil tanker traffic, resulting in a cut-off of oil to the United States from the Persian Gulf.

Obama, Salazar, Chu, and Gates green-lighted the risky Macondo drilling operation from the outset, according to WMR's government sources.

The concern all along — since pressure readings on the cap weren't as high as expected — was a leak elsewhere in the wellbore, meaning the cap may have to be reopened to prevent the environmental disaster from becoming even worse and harder to fix.

The well casing is clearly broken somewhere... perhaps in several places. The fast -rushing oil ejected at anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000* psi is enough to cut through steel, which is clearly has done.

These high porosity zones, and often sections above them, can be very difficult to drill. These wells are drilled with a weighted drilling mud... This well required 16 lbs per gallon weight, which likely translates to bottom hole pressure somewhere around 19,000 lbs per square inch (PSI) at 23,000 feet... That's big.

I gather that the concern by the Obama administration is that if the well casing disintegrates under pressure, the leak will not be able to be stopped by any means. My understanding is that BP want to keep the well capped for liability and publicity reasons, while the administration may want to let the oil flow again in order to preserve whatever integrity the well casing currently has.

My understanding is that one of the relief wells is within 5 feet of the original well casing at some distance below the sea floor. The plan is not to drain off the oil (which you would understandably envision from the phrase "relief" well) but to pump the old well casing full of drilling mud and cement and FINALLY get it to stop. What isn't clear to me is, how much of that old well casing are they depending on?? Because it's probably shot by now. Maybe they're simply hoping that the cap rock on top of the reservoir is strong enough to hold to oil in, and that the leak has not yet damaged the geologic integrity of the overlying rock.

So are you saying deepwater drilling is wrong, and should be stopped? If so, then we actually agree on something!

And you can bet your bottom dollar that if the cap is removed, the righties will be HOWLING that "Obama made them uncap the well because he WANTS the oil to destroy the Gulf!".

And, worse case scenario: A catastrophic failure of the seabed leading to a huge explosion and multiple tsunamis. It's highly unlikely, but not impossible.

Note that this report was written by an risk management company catering to CEOs, not a bunch of half-cocked alarmists. They give actual details, and reference peer reviewed scientific papers. (That seems rare these days.)

I guess the side of me that loves disaster novels finds it rather fascinating. Sure would suck a lot if it actually happened though. A whole lot.

A tsunami of oil and natural gas - a veritable wall of fire. How quaint.

On the plus side, I guess that would clear the oil out of the wetlands...

On all matters related to the spill, I trust not one word that comes from BP. Not one word. Now there is growing and compelling evidence that BP used influence and money to gain the release of the sole jailed Lockerbie bomber for drilling concessions from Libya. If found to be true, BP doesn't have enough money to repair that damage to their public image.

Saw it on cable tv news. NY Senator Schumer and a few others have written a letter to State Dept. asking for an investigation. Story is ongoing and developing.

Thanks for the links. The second one didn't work, but I found it. (Your link needs an added "l" at the end.)

Suddenly Megrahi's release makes so much more sense! I couldn't figure out what the hell they doing with that. And shocker that he's long outlived the three months that his Libyan-paid-for doctors said he had left.

It stinks. Yet another reason why the oil industry needs to end. Power needs to come from local sources.

It is a bit strange how the "doctors" could be so wrong in their evaluation, and the timing of it was so convenient to BP's Libya goals. Now it looks like he'll live a long long time. The relatives of Pan Am 103 are freaking out over this, and we'll be seeing more and more of them in the media screaming for answers.

A part of me hopes that somewhere, some small group of specialists is doing their best to ensure that that doesn't happen. I know, that's not a very charitable thought, but that certain part of me would like a small smart bomb dropped right down his chimney. Just sayin'...

Mikey, worth a second thought considering we did exactly that, or tried to, to Ghadafi, only to find out later it was a fucking setup by one of our so-called-allies-who-shall-not-be-named, who were likely themselves responsible for the bombing in question.
(Pan-Am 103, if I recall correctly)

So when it comes to shit like this, I tend to be as dubious of our claims against these goons as I was about Saddams WMD, you understand ?

Cause if you been payin attention, HOW many people have we convicted, or waterboarded confessions out of, regarding that Bali nightclub bombing despite the actual perp (a disgruntled military officer) coming forward years and years ago ?

I mean, we've "convicted" like six, eight people of the same goddamn crime we know they didn't do, for political points, and I'd say it's a pretty damn good bet a lot of em weren't guilty, and in fact, some of them DIDN'T EVEN EXIST.

Why should we ever take on faith the words of people who have lied to us and lied to us, who continue to bury us in a hailstorm of blatant lies every single day no matter what flavor of the popsicle we're being offered here ?

Isn't it ABOUT DAMN TIME we started calling bullshit as our default policy ?

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Let's see, from what I've read/seen:

The bottom line indicating leakage would be 6,000. It was at 6,700, then yesterday 6,800. Rising is a good sign, but the low numbers a bad one.

There are signs of leakage; some have been discounted as natural, some they don't know (according to THEM...no comment).

There's supposedly some method(s) they now have to siphon off what the cap is holding down, which they want to do until the relief well connects.

They don't have the "fix" ready to siphon off what comes out yet (according to BP), so BP wants to leave the cap on until they do.

If they leave the cap on without siphoning, the increasing pressure readings might forwarn too much pressure causing damage/more damage to the well casing.

If they DO lift the cap to relieve the pressure, for some reason the gov't now has the ability to measure the gusherfuck, so they could figure out know how much has gushed from the beginning (i.e., know what BP owes for that part of it).

This is supposedly the REAL reason BP doesn't want to lift the cap, as well as the video of it gushing into the Gulf once again is bad PR.

But leaving it on presents a serious danger of causing damage (more damage) to the well, causing floor leakage (or worse), so they're trying to decide what to do.

Is that what others have heard? Is that all valid? If there's danger of the pressure causing damage/more damage, why is anyone listening to BP and not just lifting the cap so we can figure out what they owe and not throw the dice on making it worse?
