This came from another thread, too, but again I think it deserves its own thread, since it has been talked about so often.

I issue a challenge to those of you who insist Fox News does not lie. Here are examples:
Quote:

This morning, Fox News featured a segment highlighting a right-wing report that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) attended an Islamic “madrassa” school as a 6-year-old child.
Fact:
Quote:

In his book Dreams Of My Father (p.142), Obama writes:

In Indonesia, I’d spent 2 years at a Muslim school, 2 years at a Catholic school. In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell mother I made faces during Koranic studies....Without the money to go to the international school that most expatriate children attended, I went to local Indonesian schools...

NOT an "Islamic madrasss".
Quote:

...the Indonesian school Obama attended in Jakarta is a public school that is not and never has been a Madrassa.
http://mediamatters.org/research/200703200011 The Laura Ingraham Show, Monica Crowley falsely asserted that Malik Obama, Sen. Barack Obama's half brother, "went on the record to The Jerusalem Post, of all places, and said, 'Oh yeah, Obama's got a really solid Muslim background.' " (Fact: Hume's claim that Malik Obama told the Post that Sen. Obama had a "Muslim background" is false. Indeed, as ABC News senior national correspondent Jake Tapper reported, according to The Jerusalem Post, Malik Obama did not speak directly with the Post but, rather, the article was referring to an interview Malik Obama gave to Israel's Army Radio. Moreover, Tapper wrote that "nowhere in [the interview] does Malik expressly say anything about Obama having a Muslim background," adding, "Malik did not say that or come close to saying that.").

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/01/19/fox-obama-madrassa/
Quote:

Fox & Friends falsely claimed that congressional Democrats are proposing to raise taxes "only in Republican red states." In fact, the year-old proposal discussed on Fox & Friends would lower taxes on areas with a high cost of living, regardless of how they vote, and would include areas represented by Republicans.
http://digg.com/politics/Fox_lies_Dems_are_proposing_to_raise_taxes_on
ly_in_red_state

Let’s try the Iraq War, which Fox pushed hard and long with repeated fear-inducing lies:
Quote:

March 14: On The Fox Report anchor Shepard Smith reports that Saddam is planning to use flood water as a weapon by blowing up dams and causing severe flood damage. (This was totally untrue.)

March 19: Fox anchor Shepard Smith reports that Iraqis are planning to detonate large stores of napalm buried deep below the earth to scorch coalition forces. (There was no basis for this and it was false)

March 23: The network begins 2 days of unequivocal assertions that a 100-acre facility discovered by coalition forces at An Najaf is a chemical weapons plant. (Weeks later is it briefly conceded that the chemicals definitively detected at the facility were pesticides.)

April 7: Repeated ominous footage of barrels buried in a below-ground shed near Karbala. The implication is that the Iraqi landscape is replete with these types of shelters, all of them brimming with evidence of chemical weapons. (They were agricultural chemicals as well.)

May 16: Special Report with Brit Hume. Muslims, citing Islam's ban of alcohol, are torching liquor stores and threatening their Christian owners. (Fact: Under Saddam's secular regime, Christian names were banned and schools were nationalized, but guns and alcohol were freely available; there was tolerance for Iraq's 1 million Catholic and Protestant Christians.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/steinreich8.html

How about some more? Try these lies put forth by Fox:
Quote:

1. There is a clause in a Democratic health bill that provides for death panels

2. Obama's education czar condoned statutory rape

3. 3-in-one lie. The VHA has a death book that 'promotes pulling the plug'. The Bush administration suspended its use. VHA doctors must direct patients to the book.

4. Terrorist fist jab - E.D. Hill apologized for reporting on how others 'in the media' had characterized the Obamas' gesture, when in fact she alone characterized it that way.

5. Obama's first annual budget four times larger than any of Bush's

6. The number of czars are growing under Obama and they have unchecked power

Disprove any of those facts, with backup, I challenge you. You can reject a SLANTED, partisan source any time, but facts are not slant. So prove them wrong.

There is no authority on the RIGHT which will cite Fox News' specific lies, and if you choose to reject everything otherwise, you are presenting an impossible task. Address the challenge directly, please, or dismiss the facts because of the source, which is the coward's way out.

And don't list me all of the times Obama or some Dem lied; if you want to site specific instances of MSNBC lying, that's fair, but before you do that, you need to prove Fox's statements are NOT lies, then we can move on.

Technically Lew Rockwell is Right-Libertarian, actually, and while useful as an information source I've always found their unsupported faith in the mythical "free market" not much more than a thin coat of gloss to hide the fact that in respect to economic policy they're all just Randroids.

That said, you'd have to hike pretty far to find a more sensible voice from the Conservative end of the spectrum.

Is that a site you're speaking of, Frem? If so, I'll google it; I'd like to see anyone try to refute the offered lies Fox News has perpetuated. I'd very much like to read a reasonble voice on the other side, but I haven't been able to find one so far.

Given there's been no valid response to either this challenge or the post from which it originally came, I am left to conclude that those who constantly insist Fox News DOESN'T lie are unable to come up with reputable facts to show otherwise on any of the points put up.

I can understand that; obviously as I said elsewhere, on some level they know it's true, but cannot expose themselve to contrasting views in an effort to prove any of it false. Which makes them both cowards and liars, in my book, for insisting something they know is untrue.

I'm seeing a pattern the past few days. By being civil and only attempting to post up my views, with facts and cites to back them up, those on the other side never refute what I post with their own facts and backup. They either reject out of hand with no reasonable explanation the sources from which I got the FACTS, or disapper from the discussion, or say something denigrating about the source or me personally.

So far there has been no valid refutation of the lies Fox News has perpetuated, and as long as none is put forth, my point has been made and accepted. Rejection of sources, flaming and statements without backup don't count, but I have no fear of refutation, because what I posted ARE facts and cannot be denied.

So the challenge has gone unanswered and stands as proof Fox News is not "fair and balanced" and that they delibertely lie to further their agenda. Thank you.

Niki - you're spoon fed this crap from Media Matters , an outfit founded by Hillary Clinton.

The very first line you spout is crap.

WTH is a "right wing" report ?

Is that the name of the reporter ? Or of the organization ? Sorry, don't know the name ' right wing '.

It's not a " lie " to call a Muslim school a madrassa. It may very well have been, but you're getting all bent out of shape ( as are the MM pin heads are ) over semantics.

Sorry hon, but this is how media works. There's spin and half reporting and yes, even mistakes on both sides. Since FOX is the only network close to being on the middle to right of the political spectrum, you'll focus only on them. But the Left does it far more, and far worse, than FOX ever has.

And I didn't see you get nearly as bent out of shape over the fabricated story and " evidence " on Bush's 'fake but accurate' documents from the Texas Air National Guard, a story which lost Danny boy his job, but because it was so much in line w/ the template of the left leaning MSM, they actually gave him an AWARD.

I've had my girl watch Olberman and Maddow for a week(in a different room) and then O'rielly and Hannity for another week, because she started saying things that she hears on comedy central shows and I asked her to find out for herself. She was amazed that on O'reilly and Hannity they have debates with liberals and seem much fairer. She could not believe the singular opinions of Olberman and Maddow. Then I showed her the ratings, her answer was simple...most Americans see through shit. I need to put a ring on this whore soon....

Well, since you think she's a whore, I'm surprised you find her opinion worth noting.

Quote:

It's not a " lie " to call a Muslim school a madrassa.
Yes, actually it is. It's like calling a public school a Catholic private school. There is a big difference between a school and a madrassas. Do your homework.

How about Newsweek as a source?
Quote:

This article, citing anonymous sources, claimed that "Mr. Obama, 45, spent at least four years in a so-called madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia." But this allegation was quickly shown to be false. Days after the article appeared, CNN sent reporter John Vause to Jakarta, Indonesia, to visit the school. He reported:

CNN: I came here to Barack Obama's elementary school in Jakarta looking for what some are calling an Islamic madrassa ... like the ones that teach hate and violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan. … I've been to those madrassas in Pakistan ... this school is nothing like that.

CNN interviewed the school's deputy headmaster, Hardi Priyono, who said: "This is a public school. We don't focus on religion."

http://www.newsweek.com/2008/01/10/sliming-obama.html

What about the lie that Obama's brother had said he was a Muslim, which was denied repeatedly? What about all the rest? To make a weak excuse for one lie, which can easily be proven AS A LIE, fails. I won't go into that one further; I've given you the facts.

I accept your need not to refute the facts or acknowledge them, to be honest I expected nothing more. Until and unless I see any actual refutation of the facts presented, my position stands unchallenged. I rarely give a damn about "winning", and I don't consider it winning, just a recognition of Fox News devotees to be deliberately blind.

All the things they said about Iraq which were flat-out lies, you must have bought that at the time. That's sad; no wonder you are so filled with fear and hatred.

I don't get my information from MSNBC or Olbermann or Maddow. I get REPORTING from them, CNN and MANY OTHER SOURCES. If I see something that interests me, I research it, as I've said many times before.

I don't even watch Olbermann much anymore; he's become almost as partisan as that Joe or whatever his name is on the "Joe Show" or whatever, who I wouldn't be caught dead watching. Olbermann has become self-righteous and smug, and his Thurber stuff is something I can't even bear to watch!

But Maddow? Show lies from the Maddow show, and back them up I dare you. Her people CHECK their facts, and not with "anonymous sources". I don't "swallow" what I hear there, either, I research it to ensure it's NOT propaganda, and I've never caught her in a lie.

Enough. I have responded to your claim and shown it false, no more is needed. Snark away; your accusations and attacks have nothing to do with reality and don't bother me.

Madrassa is the arabic word for 'school'. So there is no difference between school and madrassa. But your point is there is a big difference between a public school and a madrassa meaning an Islamic school, and in that context you are correct...in the United States.

Since Indonesia does not have a seperation of church and state public education also teaches religeon. Using your example its like erasing the line between a Catholic private school and a public school. In Indonesia the public schools are Islamic schools, if you attend you will be educated on Islam.

Just because someone attends an Islamic or Catholic school does not make them that faith. Faith is personal. If Obama says he's Christian, he's Christian. If he's not, he's lying, either way its his business. He does not regularly attend church...that sounds like most Christians I know. Muslims are a lot stricter about that sort of thing.

Hey, you want different sources? The madrassas story can be found at any number of sites, including http://www.nowpublic.com/tag/smear/news , which, from the look of it, goes after anyone and everyone. Other headlines: "Dems try to Hush Rush", "Ron Paul Race Smear Erased?", "Clintons Bushes Meyers carry out crimes Hillary Awards Citizen", "Obviously BP is playing Obama like a fiddle", "Cowardly Progressives" and more. That more to your liking?

I'm sure it's not; nothing would convince you of the facts, but it was worth clarifying.

Google "rachel maddow lies".

Here's an example of Maddow doing some underhanded editing of a speech by Bobby Jindal.

But really, you can google "(pick your pundit or media outlet) lies" and get a shitload of what folk think are lies. Most are either stories covered with one slant or another, stories based on faulty information, or op-ed pieces by pundits who are expressing opinions - not news.

You go to Media Matters to find "liars" because it fits your needs. Others go to Liberalfail or Newsbusters (off the 'maddow lies' google results.) That's whats fun about the internet. As you noted in a previous thread, anyone can find a site to feed their preconceptions and validate their worldview. It just seems that you don't realize that this can apply to you as well.

Good points, Hero. And yes, I knew Madrassas means "school". But there is a big difference between a public school and a Madrassas.

Are you saying the head master of the school Obama attended is lying? "the school's deputy headmaster, Hardi Priyono, who said: 'This is a public school. We don't focus on religion.'" Or do you have a different interpretation?

I still stand by the original facts. It was not a Madrssas which focused on Islam. They also claimed he attended that school for four years, when in actuality it was only two.

They complicated their lie as well:
Quote:

Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy pointed out that madrassas are "financed by Saudis" and "teach this Wahhabism which pretty much hates us,"
I mean, jezus, how much more propaganda does one need to see a lie?

My point has been that the Fox News sycophants routines insist that Fox doesn't lie. I have shown they do, and pursued one lie in depth. Your putting a Western or American definition to your view of public schooling in other countries.

In countries like Indonesia there is no seperation between church and state which makes the public schools subject to the country's official religeon. The focus is education, but they mince the word 'education' by integrating teaching their faith with every aspect of teaching other subjects.

My research indicates that there are dueling school systems within the Indonesian public school umbrella. On one side you have the remnant of a secular public school system and on the other, Muslim dominated madrasas that are being pushed by the 85% Muslim majority. The Muslims want to replace the traditional teaching of Pancasila (meaning 'five principals'...a Buddist inspired teaching philosophy) with traditional Islamic education.

I think the mistake you make is that just because its a public school it must be secular. That is no longer correct and in fact unlikely the case in Indonesia. The mistake I made was just because the system is no longer secular ignores the fact it once was.

Obama was born in 1961. He attended Besuki Elementary School. In the 1960s and early 1970s Indonesian schools were very poorly staffed, underfunded, and not available universaly. The rise of the Islamic education movement in Indonesia did not occur until the 1990s.

It is unlikely the schools taught a radical Muslim agenda...it is more likely they taught basic skills only and if Muslim materials were used it was likely used to teach and practice reading much as the Bible was used to teach reading in other undeveloped areas. Religious books were in good often available when no other material was.

Or is it about the influence of religion in public schools in Indonesia in the 1960's?

I view it as an effort at research to find out whether what Obama attended was a "madrassas" as we view them and as they often ARE today, or a school which was of far more secular bent. It appears that his research has indicated the latter, and I wish such information could be brought to the attention of those making the "madrassas" claim. They persist in making the claim, and backing it up with the fact that schools in Indonesia aren't secular NOW.

It's a piece of history it never occurred to me to check out. It took more imagination than I put to the issue to think of it, and I thank you Hero for doing so and helping to clear up the distinction between what some say and what the situation was more likely to have been at the time.

"I find those statements amazing. I said I found your remarks 'amazing'"

Hello,

I don't know if I ever read the post where this quote originated. However, without actually researching that post to see its context, I have always been of the (I believe correct) assumption that the quote was a backhanded compliment. I am sure he amazed you with something preposterous. I was never misled into any other interpretation.

However, Hero is in the profession of Law, and it is the practice in that profession to use anything helpful, even if it is out of context.

Let's pretend that you and your friends are having fun impersonating cinema gangsters. If you turned to a friend and said (in a comedic parody voices) "You dirty rat, you're gonna get what's coming to you. I'm gonna snuff you out like a cheap cigar." You'd better hope that the friend doesn't die under questionable circumstances. Chances are, you'll find yourself in court one day, with an attorney glaring at you and saying in accusatory tones, "Did you or did you not call Mr. Morgan a Rat? Did you or did you not threaten to 'Snuff him out?' Did you say these things?"

And you might say, "Well yes, but-"

Only to be interrupted, "Your honor, I ask that the witness confine himself to answering the question, YES or NO?"

I mean, obviously this is a silly example, but the point is that it's not about the truth. It's not about conveying information in a holistic fashion that encompasses the full scope of associated reality. It's about winning. When your whole job is about winning, I suspect the attitude leaks into your off-hours. Which is why a statement meant one way can be used to convey an opposite impression.

Fret not. It fools none. You are safe with it in place.

88% of the douchebags at ABC, NBC & CBS donated to Barry and the Demorats. All you have to do to see pure media bias is to watch MSNBC & CNN, they're ALL whores for Barry and the Dems.

FOX News is just 1 news channel in a 1,000 channel universe, I'm glad they're driving you dopes crazy

P.S. MSNBC's and CNN's ratings SUCK! "Sponge Bob Square Pants" gets WAY better rating then Keith (douchebag) Olbermann, and is more interesting.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Hee, hee, hee, Anthony, good one. Doesn't really bother me, and yes, he edited the quote to make it read like he wanted (which of course makes the other quote seem phony to me, too!). It's just mildly irritating and I don't want him to make it worse!

Just for perspective, again, Fox News' ratings aren't what they're cracked up to be, as it's been shown that they don't even come NEAR reruns of other entertainment shows like The Closer (which I happen to love) and other equivalent things.

Fox News ONLY bothers me in that the people who watch it don't watch any other source, and their lies and fraud end up worsening the entire situation by firing up their audience even worse with lies and distortions. Given that is the portion of the population most easily led and manipulated, it's been increasing the fear and hatred in a crowd already too riled up.

The channel itself doesn't bother me one whit, as it's irrelevantly stupid. It's only the lies they perpetuate which are swallowed whole cloth by their audience. I abhor lying and manipulation.

But do enjoy, it matters not to me. Also, one might note that the population which doesn't eat up Fox's pablum is spread between numerous other stations; if you were to combine all of them, it wouldn't be so much for Fox to gloat about. It's just a shame their audience doesn't get their "news" from more than one source.

Nope, we don't watch anything else...just FOX. Generalize much? Man, you are a piece of work....Pathetic actually.

STORYMARK

Kane, you really should stop talking to yourself in the mirror. It's creepy.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."
