Amazing article. Won the 2008 Pulitzer. It's old, but so worth reading again.

Pearls Before Breakfast
Can one of the nation's great musicians cut through the fog of a D.C. rush hour? Let's find out.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Does it mean the common populace does not appreciate good music? Does it mean the music is not that good? What does it mean that every kid who heard it wanted to hear more? I love that part.

Hello,

I remember this.

I suspect that appreciating fine art is something that requires someone to be in a receptive frame of mind.

Probably true. It is interesting then, that kids are always in a receptive frame of mind for fine art.

When do we lose it, I wonder?

Hello,

I think that children are, by and large, not concerning themselves constantly with recent events or events down the road. I feel that as a child, I tended to live in the 'now' very much.

In addition, so many things are new to children that they are regularly being bombarded with exciting exposures and experiences. How many children had never seen someone play a violin before? Is it not a fascinating thing to see for the first time?

If you put a nude Chinese acrobat on a unicycle and have them juggling flaming swords while doing backflips, it would be no less an example of art, but would probably be unique enough an experience to grasp everyone's attention from the concerns of the day. Children and adults alike.

By the same token, if I'd seen the act many times before, I might be more concerned with work, college, home troubles, dwindling finances, and getting to my destination on time that I may only give the unicyclist a passing glance.

Unless I was in the mood for a show, I wouldn't be inclined to study the performance and realize whether it was comparatively better or worse than other backflipping Chinese unicyclist jugglers, or whether this one was in fact the most adept I'd ever seen, and worthy of world renown.

For my own part, the average High-School Senior violinist is as likely to capture my attention as a Juliard graduate. I don't have the ability to distinguish, and violin playing is an amazing enough feat to me regardless of the performer. I saw a young girl in front of a Subway at an airport once that fascinated me for an hour as I waited for my flight.

But if my flight had been immediately pending? She'd not have earned more than a glance.

DREAMTROVE

I think it's a matter of free time. We are in a society that pushes the right buttons to make us work forever. As a result, we have no time to enjoy life. Speaking of which, I have to get back to work.

Ever seen the movie Equilibrium ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equilibrium_%28film%29

Well, in the opinion of the powers that run this world, THAT is a "perfect society", where all the peons work, live and die to advance their interests without "waste effort".

Why Does the World Feel Wrong?

Quote:

Our battle for liberty appears not just as a conflict between those who want freedom versus those who want control, but instead as the battle between normal people and the psychopaths. I have found incredible explanatory power of our world within the psychopathic hypothesis: The world feels wrong because psychopaths run it. In a country trained to discount and ridicule all ideas more than a standard deviation from the average, coherent explanations of observable social phenomena don't get much press. Without understanding physical laws, we would never have gained the massive improvements in our quality of life from technological developments. Similarly, without understanding our social systems, we will never escape from the tyranny unleashed on us by psychopaths. We should spread the word and explore this rich vein of thought with vigor

And so it is, and once you understand THAT, you quickly realize that their opinion of anything that doesn't advance their interests is nothing more than "A stupid pet trick".

They Poll Herefords, Don't They?
http://jpfo.org/smith/smith-herefords.htm
Quote:

Listen to them closely and you'll hear that we might as well be different species. They are an elite -- near demigods who are above everything, including the law. We are less than nothing, of no concern to them except for the tasks we perform and the wealth we create for them to steal. If some of us can play the violin, create beautiful paintings or sculptures, or bring audiences to tears with our singing or acting, those are just "stupid pet tricks" without real value or significance.

Do you really think it's an accident that a society built and run by those people strives at every turn to crush the humanity out of humans, right from the cradle ?

And DT - this is why you keep finding my caltrops underfoot these days.

So long as you're playing by their rules, rules that they created for their benefit, which don't even APPLY to them when they become inconvenient, so long as you're rolling their loaded dice and expecting to do anything but BENEFIT them, so long as you continue to alienate those who'd aye and die while befriending those who'd plant a dagger in your back with a big happy grin for a pat on the head...

You will continue to find yourself tripping over them, cause every time you do this, you serve their cause, whether you know it or not.

The ONLY way to change this is to stop playing their game by their rules, come at it sideways, take a third option, and always, always, strike for the root while tying the branches in knots.

The best way not to is joining the carefully managed "opposition" while accepting their assumptions and operating on them, and who do you think handed off those assumptions to them, neh ?
Why on earth does everyone keep taking sociopaths at their word ?
But no, there you are, sneering at the folks you've been told to, without ever questioning it because it sounded sooo much like what you WANTED to hear that you bought it hook, line and sinker.

So yeah, go ahead, play left to right, black and white, like a good little soldier.
Just don't be too surprised when you get blindsided by grey.

Hello,

Today seems designed to make a dimwit out of me. I couldn't connect your commentary to the source article, Frem.

It seems I'm missing details and connections all day today.

Anthony...

We're talkin about people born and raised in a society created and run by folk who consider humanity, empathy, the kind of things you *NEED* to in any way appreciate art - to be liabilities.

And a society DESIGNED to smash that humanity, that empathy, right out of people so they will be obedient to those in control.

Thus, the "heartstrings" Art pulls on, that Art *needs*, to be truly appreciated - they ain't there in many adults, they've been severed, intentionally and on purpose by a society that's set up to do just that by folk who consider Art itself to be "Stupid Pet Tricks" and waste effort that does not serve them.

This is also why the kids *did* appreciate it - it takes a lot of time and effort to rob someone of their humanity, and no matter how excellent the system to do it is, it's flat NOT possible to eliminate all of it, tho that's never stopped em from trying.

And never for a moment doubt that there is at least a general theme of those in positions to control this society to do it - I showed you one really blatant, admitted example concerning a single television show aimed at children, but do you think it was limited to just that one, or just that medium ?

No, this is a pervasive and deliberate effort, with a specific agenda - to *ME*, this isn't even a "Huh?" but rather a "Duh!", a natural cause and effect of a deliberate policy.

And as always my solution is to prevent Sociopaths from being created and/or advancing to the top tiers of society, no matter what that takes.

“Sisters,” she began, “let me tell you what is happening, and who it is that we must fight. It is the Magisterium, the Church. For all its history—and that’s not long by our lives, but it’s many, many of theirs—it’s tried to suppress and control every natural impulse. And when it can’t control them, it cuts them out. Some of you have seen what they did at Bolvangar. And that was horrible, but it is not the only such place, not the only such practice. Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did—not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan’t feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, obliterate, destroy every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to.

Quote:

"There are two great powers," the man said, "and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

Both quotes from The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman.

When you realize those are the people "in charge" of our society... all of this makes perfect sense.
As does my solution.

It took me a long time Frem, but I read your whole post carefully. And read the links too. I do remember Equilibrium the movie. I had forgotten about it--but it supplements this thread very well.

What a world we are in, huh? I feel like those wrestler dudes in They Live sometimes.

Yes, that is unfortunate.

'Cause when I tell folks I see "Obey" and "Submit" signs everywhere, they just think I'm a member of the Wacko Nutters of the Lunatic Fringe.
