The developers behind the proposed Ground Zero mosque have applied for about $5 million in federal grant money set aside for redeveloping downtown Manhattan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a new report.

The application was submitted as a "community and cultural enhancement" grant, which is a program run by the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Corp.

Developer Sharif El-Gamal discussed the grant proposal in recent closed-door meetings, according to The Daily Beast.

The revelation that the developers have asked for this grant could reignite outrage about the mosque's proposed location.

Wait....they're applying for Federal $$ , which was set aside to rebuild the area after the 9/11 attacks.... where?

I thought the Mosque wasn't AT Ground Zero. So, how can they apply for $$ that's meant to revitalize Ground Zero, if they're not building on that site ?

What happened to separation between church and state? Surely they are prohibited from giving grants to religious organizations. I expect they will just get their grant application denied.

Like woman, I am a mystery.

It's a community center so I don't see why that would disqualify them based on religious reasons.

Having trouble raising funds? The wackos in the middle east not putting out? Not a good sign, and the union isn't on board either.

Hello,

According to the quote you posted, the money was set aside to redevelop downtown Manhattan.

Hello,

I imagine the area saw much economic difficulty. That must be why they set aside Federal dollars for revitalization efforts.

It's called the Lower Manhatten Development Corporation. It was created fund the building of commercial and public buildings along with a memorial.

Hello,

One imagines that if they qualify for the grant, they will receive the money. And if they don't qualify for the grant, they won't receive the money.

Once that result is in, people will know whether they find the result agreeable or disagreeable.

Then, if dissatisfied, they can rail against the persons who arranged this Federal money in the first place. Whoever those persons are, they will be the ones who set up its rules of disbursement.

The LMDC has already put aside money to build the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. So religious organisations have already received funding. In other words they are not supporting any one religion as much as they are supporting the renovation of Lower Manhatten.

While doing some research I found this bit of history.
