American Psychosis: What happens to a society that cannot distinguish between reality and illusion?…

The United States, locked in the kind of twilight disconnect that grips dying empires, is a country entranced by illusions. It spends its emotional and intellectual energy on the trivial and the absurd. It is captivated by the hollow stagecraft of celebrity culture as the walls crumble. This celebrity culture giddily licenses a dark voyeurism into other people’s humiliation, pain, weakness and betrayal. Day after day, one lurid saga after another, whether it is Michael Jackson, Britney Spears or John Edwards, enthralls the country … despite bank collapses, wars, mounting poverty or the criminality of its financial class....

....The decline of American empire began long before the current economic meltdown or the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It began before the first Gulf War or Ronald Reagan. It began when we shifted, in the words of Harvard historian Charles Maier, from an “empire of production” to an “empire of consumption.”

While I agree that this problem exists, I do take issue that all this is caused by "free-market capitalism." Of course, as always, I contend we haven't had free market capitalism since the frontier days.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

And we never will. So-called free-market (small business) capitalism inevitably progresses to corporatism and monopolism. Not due to conspiracy (altho those exist) but the general trend toward "bigness" in our economies.

Much as I dislike the data, human history shows that economies tend to get bigger and bigger and bigger over time... from hamlets to villages, to cities, to kingdoms, to empires. I think there are a lot of reasons for this... that power concentrates (whether in the form of money or soldiers); that larger economies can afford greater specialization and more developed technology; that larger economies can create greater internal efficiencies; that larger economies can access a greater variety of materials and resources from a larger area.

In other words, larger economies are more productive economies.

I don't think this is planned; I believe this is a INHERENT, internal process.

Furthermore, when these large systems fail, they fail catastrophically. I have almost never seen a large economy voluntarily scale back, introduce redundancies, create mini-systems within itself that can be self-sustaining over a month, a year, a decade, or a century.

The problem I find with peeps who try to return to the days of small business is that you can't go back again.

It thinks it walked on the Moon, while ignoring the US govt's genocide of 2-million Vietnamese and the murder of 1 US president.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Barring a law that sets arbitrary limits on the size of a particular business, I'm not sure how to keep this from happening.

Assuming this is true, what do you suggest is a viable solution? Is it possible to have a solution that is non-violent?

Get rid of govt. All supposed big businesses subsist off of govt. subsidy, not the free market. You can be basically assured that if the primary source of a company's revenue is the govt, it's going to be a problem. All our problem energy companies are govt. subsidized, as are our military industrial complex, big pharm, major automakers, banks, hey, BP is subsidized by two govts: Ours and Britains. And who knows how many others. Walmart is subsidized by our govt, local govts. and the govt. of China.

The way to kill all of these is to avoid using their currency

That's always fascinated me; the eternal cry in America (probably the rest of the world, I dunno) is "grow your business!" I always wondered what happens when you can't grow anymore? I wish there were some more sustainable method of "success", but I can't imagine it taking hold in this country. We are so much into "bigger = better".

I don't know whether less competition would lessen this or just lead to stagnation, and I can't think of any other method, but I wish there were one.

I don't think of America as dying, Cat, I think of the American EMPIRE as dying; all the other empires died in their time, but the countries went right on existing, albeit in a less grandiose fashion. I kind of hope that's how it goes for us; empires aren't healthy!

I have to say I hear the same mantra on this one "America will return." the left tends to think that if we feed it more power this will happen, and the right sits and hopes for some revolution.

Neither of these things will ever happen. America isn't coming back. It's dead. That's the end, and it's long overdue. No one will mourn the passing of the USA outside of a few die hard and typically ignorant loyalists within our own borders who have no idea how depraved and evil the nation has become.

The territories that once made up the United States will inherit the lands, the population, and the culture or what is left of any of them, as the territories of Rome did.
