Why taping interrogations is so important.

Despite resistance to the idea that all interrogations and "interviews" (which often amount to the same thing) should be taped, probably due to the methods they use, it's becoming clearer and clearer than this would be a substantial check against police misconduct, and nowhere is it more apparent than in a local case here in which the family has made the tape available to a local news outlet so that the public can see the misconduct which was involved in something that strikes most rational folk as a complete setup on behalf of the police and prosecutor.

TWO YEARS of hell, 80 days in jail for the father, amongst hardass felons who had no doubt been encouraged to act against him (lets not bullshit ourselves here) due to the accusations, which could have, and often does, result in fatal consquences, over a year in foster care (don't EVEN get me started on that) for the kids, uncountable legal bills...

You ask me, 1.8 Million isn't even half enough.
And of course, WE wind up paying it, if I had my way that'd come straight out of the police and prosecutors budget, enough of THAT would actually discourage this, since none of the parties involved are getting disciplined in any way, and are trying to have the case dismissed, citing Governmental immunity.

Screw that, these people knowingly committed a crime and should be held accountable, and that fine should be assessed not against the general budget, but against the police, prosecutors office, as well as the school district and human services - all of whom chose to deliberately pursue the case even after it became clear that they were in essence manufacturing one.

Bear in mind they did not notify his appointed legal rep, despite a requirement to do so.

This also crosses over with the problem of this type of accusation and that it still is not mandated for the initial interview/interrogation to be recorded in that case either - something which causes untold trauma and damage in cases like this, and in cases where the accusation is correct, deprives the case of damned useful evidence, since a videotape cannot be intimidated on the stand.

Ergo, trying to get PROTECT onboard to push the state legislature on this, cause mandatory tape would prevent a lot of abuse and provide a needful check against misconduct, just as dashcams have shown up and outed abusive officers on the road.
(With the caveat that the tapes will NOT be left in possession of the department, but a civilian review board)

At the very least, I want Detective Brousseaus head on a spike, metaphorically, the conduct of the department as a whole was reprehensible.

Hmm. So my question is, what did the family do, or what were the dynamics of the town and families in it that made them into targets?

Is it another low family on the totem pole example, like that school blaming a canceled prom on the lesbian girl? Was some social worker or worker at the school looking to make a name for themselves? Did the family have some incriminating evidence that the police wanted silenced?

The traditional way to video an interrogation is to:

1. Turn camera on

2. Ask suspect if he's comfortable, make small talk, bring coffee.

3. Ask a question.

4. Turn camera off.

5. Makes threats. Torture if required.

6. Turn camera on.

7. Get confession.

8. Repeat as needed.

Until the sheeple learn to make citizens arrests of cops, prosecutors, judges and politicians, nothing will ever change. As you say, suing Big Brother usually results in a tax increase to pay for it. Suing Al Capone is not the answer. Remember the Battle of Athens TN...

Fight every traffic ticket. That's 100-million more trials Big Bro has to actually work to steal money from We The People, rather than eat out our sustenence. I always file criminal charges against every cop who arrests me for traffic court.

Well, first you have the well-known stigmata of having messed up kids, in a rather affluent suburban neighborhood, oh they're different, they're strange... made worse by the obvious behavioral quirks of Autism spectrum disorders.

West Bloomfield is the kinda place where your neighbors would get pissed at you for that because they feel it would reduce their property value, that sorta thing.

Not to mention the police dept is full of busybodies trying to justify their existence and continued bloated budget in light of having essentially nothing to DO - kinda like Flint, MI and the baggy pants law after most of the criminals either killed each other or fled to WI when the area went right-to-carry.

So it was a combination of those kind of factors to begin with, but once it became clear they had nothing, they pursued it anyway because they KNEW at that point the only thing that would protect them from a lawsuit and potential consequences was to carry it all the way through, what I call "goal line syndrome", they figure if they CAN put you away, even if it's bullshit, then they never have to face the consequences, as if there ever are any worth a mention anyways.

As you have no doubt guessed, all of these cases like this have at their root what is essentially bullying - it doesn't STOP at graduation, the bullies simply gravitate to positions where their behavior will be rewarded, and in our society there are too goddamn many of those.

City Council, Homeowners Orgs, Police Forces, Local Chamber of Commerce, Local Development Authorities, all of these and more, are so often used to pursue personal grudges long pre-existing in the community.

What is, unfortunately less common, is someone willing and able to stand up to them.
