Stone of Destiny is a feature film from Canada, the first country to address the subject of modern Scottish nationalism. There’s some history here; Braveheart and Rob Roy both positioned Scots as rugged heroes and the English as snivelling villains, and audiences worldwide took this vision to their hearts. Smith’s film comes closer to the present day, depicting the Scottish National Party supporters who removed the stone of destiny from Westminster Abbey in 1950, and brought it back to Scotland, as heroes of reclaimed nationhood.

Good show, mates!

Like Capture The Flag, but with rocks.

Too bad no Scots were used in the making of this movie in the British Commonwealth Empire.

I take a bit of inspiration from my ancestors... They pretty much opposed foreign rule wherever they could. Lots of crazy strategies and trickery, in addition to lots of fighting, and they still plot and plan the downfall of any upstarts wanting to tell THEM what to do.

When the Romans were in England, they built a big damn wall between them and the Scotts for a reason...

How big a wall? I recall seeing it and thinking "like that's gonna do it" but then later I read that it was not the original wall, I imagine wikipedia has this one covered.

My grandfather was a scottman, highlander, clan macintosh, and yet, eminently mortal. He wasn't actually decapitated with a sword, but that was the general idea. Weren't for that I would've been a Macintosh, because it happened before my grandparents were married.

Anyway, I agree with Byte, though I think the present ownership of the stone is due to Sean Connery insisting upon its return before accepting knighthood from the queen.

See, this is the thing about awards. *All* awards. Awards award the awarder not the awardee by association with the awarded. Thus, when MTV gives Taylor Swift an award they are upping the perceived value of MTV by connecting it to the awesomeness of Taylor Swift. The perception of Taylor Swift is unchanged, because she was always awesome.

In fact, awards can be detrimental, but I digress.

Knighthood is exactly the same. The crown wants to claim credit for the awesomeness of everyone else. And particularly, they want people to connect them to the awesome.

So, you think "the queen knighted Bob Geldoff for his work in Africa? A punk rocker and an Irishman. Wow. She must really care about Africa. What a great thing she did there."

And then when you stop to think. No, wait. rewind.

What a great thing *Bob* did because *he* really cares a lot about Africa.

You see the award trick?

To see it best done, check out the academy awards. Or playboy.

Anyway, not at all denying the awesomeness of the theft. Also, the potential awesomeness of an independent Scotland.

Not being to closely related is of course why the clans exist, like the original caste system in india, not the British class caste system, but the one they've had for thousands of years. It's all about avoiding inbreeding while also avoiding genetic collapse, which is way too long a diversion for now. Anyway, yes, some of my ancestors came to clan mac because of something to do with the head of a rival clan saying "hey, my daughter is not marrying that scoundrel" and when I looked into "did that happen?" the answer was apparently "all the time" so I guess it's no guarantee.

Anyway, yes, he was my fathers father, so I'm a member of Clan MacIntosh. I think it came up once before in a discussion with Finn, but maybe you weren't here then.

So what type of Scot are you?

Mom's a Mackintosh, she was brought up in touch with the local community in Salt Lake City. Dad's an Anderson, which are sort of the scottish clan-less, most around Auberdine area I think. Or if you mean lowlander or highlander, yeah, we're the highlanders.

Ours left Scotland in the 1800s with the Mormon movement, I'm not sure what the precise motivation was, I'd have to ask but they were probably poor and disenfranchised at that point.
