I found it surprising that we paid no attention to the uprisings in Tanzania. Given what's happening in Egypt, and now Jordan, it may end up being the spark that set the Mideast alight, yet (unless I missed something?) I saw nothing posted about it here. I wonder why? Is it because it's a country we care little about? Are we more focused on arguing about politics, guns, abortion and dissing one another than the REAL real world events, as DT’s post suggested?

At any rate, here’s some news on the subject, maybe some will find it worth discussing. Or not.

Tanzanian police on Tuesday fired in the air to disperse hundreds of opposition supporters in the capital Dar es Salaam who tried to stage a demonstration to demand a new constitution.

The opposition Civic United Front party on Monday called for the march to present their draft constitution to the justice minister, but police declared their demonstration illegal.

"Dozens of policemen blocked the demonstrators and dispersed them after opening fire in the air. Police blocked the supporters who were marching towards the city centre," a witness who did not want to be identified told AFP.

Pressure has been mounting in the east African country for a new charter after October general elections won by incumbent President Jakaya Kikwete but denounced as fraudulent by opposition groups.

Key among the changes sought by the opposition and other civil society groups are a limiting of presidential powers and the establishment of an independent electoral commission.

We’re living through history. Given all that’s occurring, do you think this is all heralding major changes in the Middle East, or just a few sparklers? Won’t it be strange if little, unnoticed Tanzania turns out to be the spark that set the Mideast on fire...

Yes.

I once asked if you wanted me to post real horror stories that is occurring around the world. You said "no." Nobody else said "yes" either.

So I didn't. Nobody wants to hear about REAL world events, because they are horrifying and gross and depressing. People want the Disneyfied version, where people are chanting for freedom, rather than look at the disgusting poverty they lived in that motivated them to chant for freedom, see?

Debates about left vs right politics, guns, abortion, and dissing each other allows all of us to live in the illusory, but relatively sanitized world of "issues." Go into the REAL world, and you get that gory massacre of BC sled dogs, except with humans.

Who wants to think about that? Who wants to think about thousands of women in line at a genital reconstruction clinic? It is so terrible, it paralyzes normal people with helplessness and despair.

After which we can no longer enjoy our favorite latte at Starbucks.

We really didn't have ANYTHING about Tanzania?

That's weird. We all knew it was going on. We were even talking about it, somewhere. I'm sure we were.

Which is one reason I am so cagey and cryptic about some of my own work - as I say, there's some things in this world, just the knowing of can hurt you.

Of course, being a right nasty fellow to begin with lessens the harm, by a good bit - evil within resists evil without.
