It's a rather long video.

People in northern Japan are living a life of small daily horrors. Aside from acknowledged widespread contamination, children are required to wear radiation monitors; schools are forcing children to set aside the lunches that have been packed for them by concerned moms and to eat school lunches made with demonstrably contaminated ingredients. And not only must they eat the school lunches, they are forced to eat the parts most likley to have the highest contamination: mushrooms, bamboo roots, and beef.

Mushrooms Join Growing List of Radioactive Threats to Japan’s Food Chain
Quote:

Nameko mushrooms grown in the open air in Soma, a city about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the plant damaged in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, were found to contain nine times the legal limit of cesium, the local government said Aug. 12.

Regulatory authorities run away from people in a public meeting (Maybe the attendees should have been charged $15 to attend? Maybe the officials should be setting aside more time out to listen to TEPCO? Eh Geezer?)

Here is the video. Like I said, it is rather long, but it touches the heart, as it should.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Perhaps I have an inadequate understanding of society in Japan. Perhaps they are more programmed to follow government authority.

Even as a child, I can not imagine anyone forcing me to eat anything, nor confiscating my property, given to me by my parents specifically to take to school, without me raising holy hell. And them, too, for that matter.

I don't know that the Japanese are more prone to follow authority than US citizens.

After all, look at the swell of authoritarianism after 9-11 which made getting rid of habeas corpus and eliminating jury trials acceptable in the USA. By way of comparison- the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan is a FAR greater crisis than 9-11 ever was. On a scale of 1 to 10, 9-11 barely registers. And yet we bankrupted ourselves in a fit of fear, engaging in dysfunctional activity, torturing people, trying to stamp out "terrorism" around the world by being the biggest terrorists of all. "Shock and awe", anyone? But... I digress.

The ray of hope is that the Japanese themselves are organizing and confronting their government, pushing it to do what needs to be done to keep children safe. That is a good thing, and a constructive response to extreme stress.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Upon signing the petition, I was asked for a donation. Not to help people in Fukushima, but rather to support the petition software/host.

I am left with a bad taste in my mouth. One should not sign a petition to lend their voice to a cause only to be solicited for money. Moreover, after being so solicited, I now worry what they will do with my email address.

No offense to the petitioners, but the petition software/host makes me nervous.

Yeah, sorry about that; I should have warned you. I skipped the donation part.

There are some websites that I find, over time, are worth a donation. This is one, Fairewinds ( http://fairewinds.com/) and Wikipedia are others.

Perhaps over time I will find that this particular website does a great job of hosting international petitions and is linked with effective, credible organizations, but to quote the great Burt Gummer (Tremors)

"I do not have the answer at this time."

BY the way, thought you might enjoy this:

Wrong goddamn rec room!

Hello,

A classic scene, forever dear to my heart.

I wish to someday have half of that man's collection. :-)
