Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This article presented information about mosquitoes I was completely ignorant of.

The idea of installing laser intercept systems seems as impractical as it seems awesome.

Keep the Shiny side up

You can find more info here:

Or, if you subscribe to (or can find a copy of) Make magazine, there's a good article in volume 23 written by one of the Intellectual Ventures developers.

The built the laser device using second-hand and repurposed equipment bought off E-bay. They apparently found that, although they could pretty much vaporize a mosquito, just heating it up would kill it within a short time, be safer for anything else in the area, and use a lot less energy.

Hello,

This is remarkable. It seems so much like science-fiction, but apparently it works?

This has some important repercussions. If you can target mosquitoes, why not fruit flies, or other produce pests?

Man, I want one!

And a Firefly too, while they're at it.

Their technology apparently can distinguish between, say, mosquitos and honey bees, so they might be able to target pretty much any bug they want to zap.

Cost and availability of electricty seem to be the limits now. I seem to remember that they're working on a solar powered system. Combine that with batteries and you got 24/7 off-grid mosquito defense.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Forget mozzies, tho' they find me delicious, I found something that keeps them away which is cheap and non-oily. I want something that can zap YELLOW JACKETS!!! They make our lives miserable (tho' not this year, again with the cooler weather), they are aggressive and their bite really HURTS! I got one under my arm a couple of weeks ago--I wasn't doing anything, wasn't bothering it, had nothing sweet or edible on my arm, didn't close my arm on it or anything, it just decided to smack me. And unlike regular bees, their stingers grow BACK! Gimme something to kill those bastards, I'll pay good money for it (especially as they kill our honey bees!).

Oh yes, Yellowjackets are just plain MEAN, they'll come up and sting you for no reason, and worse, retaliating will cause them to release a chemical distress signal which'll bring all their friends down on you in a kinda pissed off mood.

Of course, with one of these mini death stars that could get quite entertaining, watching them rush to their doom like nasty little lemmings...

If yer gettin the idea that I REALLY hate the little motherfuckers, you'd be right.
