Ok...so it's over.

Over where?... says I. So the couple news articles I could find said Iraq. What about Afganistan? The article says "ALL" troops will be recalled by the END of the year. Ok...Them too?

Seems like to me this isn't that big of a news story on the internets. Is it just that it's a Friday and nobody wants to work on a Saturday writing articles?

Anybody have any thoughts about whats gonna or could happen?

Anybody even notice? Shouldn't we be happy about this? Did I just go crazy and then fall asleep?

(edit...sorry Niki I didn't see yer thread...and I looked too )

Well, I'm happy. I'm not too fond of those wars.

I just read that the seized assets of about 160 BILLION that's with a B! will be handed back to Libya...What I'm wondering is to WHO, and are we quite sure we want the rebels with THAT? They haven't exactly been saints from what I've read.

THis could go bad in just soooooooooooooo many ways....

I think Illinois is up for sale.

No war is pretty. I'd sooner trust a popular revolution than I would a military coup like we had in Egypt. (Assuming this was a popular revolution, I have my doubts, though I'm not sure one way or another. Time will tell)

As for that money, it belongs to Libya, they might use it in ways we don't like, but then it's their money.

That's how I see it.

The President said all American troops would be out of IRAQ by year's end. Some will transition to Afghanistan, where the war goes on. Same as it ever was.

What's the first thing you'd go buy with that dough if you were Libyan and been livin' with what they've been livin with the last forty-odd years?

Lots of freakin' weapon...that's what.

And lots of 'em don't like US, right?

160B's buys a lotta these

Buying weapons does not necessarily mean an intent to use them, and also, we haven't seen them buying weapons yet.

But, even that aside, it's their money. We take away their money for whatever reason, that's that much less money/intrinsic wealth/whatever that exists in their economy/nation/among their population.

When other countries take money from a population for whatever reason, it makes me think of Haiti, and other nations hit hard by such a theft.

I'm actually proud of us for once not trying to control the hell out of people. Talk about giving people a REASON to dislike us.

Ok, so it's just Iraq.

Article says it's mostly because Americans would no longer be immune from prosecutions in Iraq, so we didn't REALLY have a choice...

Over 4400 dead 32000 injured "over there", btw...

Also this job shortage thing is gonna get fun come January...
40 thousand...
Welcome home, boys...and girls...

Pretty safe bet we'll still have "advisors" and contractors there, at least until they piss the people there off so much that they're either run out of the country or they get themselves killed (at which point I'm sure the righties will insist that we need to send troops in to protect them...)

There's talk of a draw-down in Afghanistan, but no timetable and I'm not holding my breath. As we've been discussing, all the "troops" were supposed to come home from Iraq at the end of this year anyway, as that was set up back in 2008. It's the "trainers" we were going to leave behind, that's all, and it's sensible of the Iraqis not to give them immunity, considering what some of our troops have done in the past!

It's a forward step and our guys are coming home, tha's all I care about. Yes, it will make the job market even tougher and they're in for a rude shock, dammit, but it's better than being in somebody's gun sights, far as I'm concerned. OR trying to live in Iraq, which believe me, is about as "culture shocky" as you can get...next to Afghanistan that is.

WHOSE money? Libyan womens'? Ex-Kadafi supporters'? Black Libyans'? That's like saying "it's the United States' money". Well, there are a lot of ppl who don't share in it, and some who get a lot. Lumping generic people into nations-state-categories is... well... not exactly realistic. Whenever you hear the phrase "we" (or "them") just remember the funny phrase from the Lone Ranger and Tonto, when Tonto looks at the Lone Ranger (after the LR has proposed a particularly hare-brained scheme which put Tonto at risk: "What mean this 'we', Kimo sabe?" Exactly WHO (which group) are you thinking about?

AND contractors, Niki. AND contractors.
So, what happens to our contractors? Since there are about as many as our troops.

Anyway, glad our troops are coming home; they didn't belong there in the first place. Iraq and Saddam were never a threat to us; Saddam was a committed secularist. Bush (II) created a power vacuum (unlike his daddy, who thought more than one step ahead and figured Saddam was the preferable alternative) and Iran came and filled it. Bush II created a terrible mess, and all the king's horses and men aren't about to put it back together again. Glad we finally recognized that. Time to accept the new reality and move on.

Everything you said Sig, and of course, "our" contractors! I hadn't thought about that, but what IS their situation? Do THEY have immunity? Of course, it doesn't really matter I suppose since their way of doing things isn't open warfare...

But certainly them too, in fact them most of all, since from what I hear from friends in other countries (not so much here), they've been quite culpable in things they should be held accountable for!

It matters which group, yes, but the money needs to go back in general because theoretically that money represents some part of the Libyan economy.

And if it represents some part of their economy, that affects EVERYONE in that country. So I don't have to be specific about any particular group to say what I did.

Well, I'm not sure sure about that. I can point to any number of nations where most of the money goes to a very few.
