A disgraced politician broke down in tears after he admitted taking nearly $500,000 in bribes - with the help of his gay lover.

New York State Senator Carl Kruger, 62, bought a Bentley and a beautiful mansion, where he lived with gynaecologist boyfriend Michael Turano, with his ill-gotten gains.

He quit his political post on Tuesday shortly before striking a plea bargain in Manhattan Federal Court, and has been told he now faces up to 50 years for his crimes.

A pitiful Kruger, who has never admitted he is gay and once publicly opposed same-sex marriage, told the judge as he choked up: 'I apologise if I'm a little emotional over this.'

'My actions were in violation of the law, and I knew that they were wrong. I accept responsibility for my actions and am truly sorry for my conduct.'

Turano, 50, also faces five years in jail after he pleaded guilty to depositing the cash into his own business accounts.

He battled through sobs and tears to say: 'I understood that part of this money was paid because Carl Kruger, acting in his official capacity as a member of the New York State Senate, sought to benefit those individuals or entities making such payments.'

The couple have still never acknowledged their relationship, despite wiretaps showing them 'baby talking' and talking about how Kruger fell in love at first sight.

The couple were among eight people caught earlier this year in a 'broad-based bribery racket reflecting an unholy alliance of politicians, lobbyists and businessmen'.

Kruger was charged with peddling his influence for more than five years, including as chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee.

Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said: 'With Senator Kruger's guilty plea today, yet another lawmaker-turned-lawbreaker has now been removed from an undeserved position of power in Albany.

'Instead of serving the people who elected him, he monetised his public office and served himself.'

Kruger received more than $1 million in bribes through a 'pay-to-play' scheme.

Companies would make payments to shell companies set up by Turano. Kruger would then sponsor legislation in their favour.

The cash funded a lavish lifestyle which saw the couple buying a Bentley sedan and a Mill Basin mansion.

The seriousness of Turano's crimes would usually call for up to 71 years in prison, but his plea bargain to a single count of conspiracy to commit bribery limits him to five years.

He also agreed to pay a fine of up to $125,000 and up to $450,000 in forfeitures.

Kruger yesterday pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit 'honest services' fraud and two counts of bribery conspiracy. He will be sentenced on April 26, and has agreed to paying up to $450,000 in forfeitures.

He could be jailed for up to 111 years and fined up to $150,000. But he will still keep his pension.

Charges are still pending against lobbyist Richard Lipsky, health-care consultant Solomon Kalish and former hospital executive Dr Robert Aquino.

And isn't it ironic that so often we have to go to foreign news sources for this because our mainstream media buries it in a flood of pathetic distraction tactics.

Bullshit, that sad-ass trite little phrase only ever comes out of their mouth when they're caught and about to fry, accepting responsibility means coming forward BEFORE your ass is dragged into court for it, and they only thing these bastards are SORRY for, ever, is getting caught.

Oh and fuck that plea bargain, firstoff we know damn well he made more than $600k in bribes, and five years probably commuted to one ?
Sheeeit, crime pays well, don't it ?

To hell with that, take EVERYTHING that shithead owns and throw him UNDER the prison for that hundred plus years, betrayal of the public trust should come with consequence, not profit!

Frankly, I am starting to maybe wonder if we shouldn't include a legally binding clause in public political service oaths that acknowledges and accepts that should be they be found in violation of the public trust...

I like the legally binding clause. A lot.

I am not sure about the rope. Not a big fan of death penalty and all.

I think they should lose all of their assets for sure, to be returned directly to taxpayers in their state.

Nor am I, in fact I despise it, but in this case it's not arbitrary, as it is in our so-called justice system...

Thing is, CTS - it's quite common to use shell companies, holdings, relatives, etc - to hide, bury or otherwise tie up your assets out of reach of that, there's whole law firms who specialize in it, and not just up at the top but even as low as deadbeat dads dodging their responsibility, which irritates the hell out of me given the squeeze they often put upon dads who try to fulfil that responsibility and simply do not have enough resources to do it, who get extra shafted cause every time they do beg mercy the people and state point to the dodgers, so it fucks over the decent while rewarding the evil.

And speakin of evil, those law firms are also how the Supreme Court hides the tremendous bribery which goes on there by filtering it through their wives, seriously, look it up.

Anyhow, they can dodge an asset seizure, throw bankruptcy at the fines, and they ain't never REALLY gonna suffer that way cause in extremis they'll blackmail former allies for a little baksheesh, yanno ?

But dodgin a date with the hangman ?
Not so easy, and it ENSURES they don't get to come back round again and again as soon as memory fades, and fuck us, again and again and again...
See Also: Kissinger, Pearle, Rumsfeld, Libby, Rove, Wolfowitz....

People forget, but for a lotta the Bush administration, that was in fact the second, third, or even fourth chance some of them shitheels got to screw us over, courtesy of Nixon and his slimy cohorts getting pardoned instead of run to ground and rooted out like they shoulda been.

Past a point forgiveness is enabling, and that has lead us HERE.
And so, a line must be drawn.

Does have a wonderful irony to it: Paris Hilton is actually indirectly responsible for the coming revolution.

The media had the world by the ear, and decided to blather at them. Then, when the internet showed up, instead of switch quickly over to the new medium, they told everyone it was evil and tried to kill it. I guess they're still trying.

Perhaps TPTB will defeat themselves.

No, not a matter of forgiveness. Just disagreeing on how far the punishment should go.

But hard to dodge the gallows, tru dat.
