Sure we can... we just have to hitch a ride w/ the Russians, or the Chinese.

But don't worry. Obama has given clear and bold instructions to NASA... make Muslims feel good about themselves !

Probably because until recently, the government was the one throwing megabucks at the companies with the tech to do those things, so no private concern could get into the race. Also, the government was the only entity who could certify manned spacecraft, and they were interested in keeping a monopoly for quite a while.

And yet, even with the deregulation of space, if you will, and even with the availability of the knowledge of HOW to do it (something NASA and the original Mercury Seven astronauts really weren't all that certain of when they tried it) and the background research all done, and billions (if not TRILLIONS) of times more computing power, here we are steadfastly NOT gaining ground in the race for private space exploration.

From the first person into space to the first person to orbit the Earth is a certain benchmark, one that private companies have failed to meet or better. From first orbit to first steps on the Moon is another benchmark; think any corporation will put a man there in the next 7.5 years?

I think you'll find a lot of people who would choke on their morning cereal at the notion that Outer Space is a worthy Welfare program. You can tell this is the case because our democratic society is not clamoring en masse to throw people into the stars. Rather, they're clamoring for jobs and health care and even wealth distribution in some cases- all in more numbers than space exploration.

Incidentally, this is the same reason private corporations aren't tossing astronauts onto Mars at the moment. The cost-benefit analysis doesn't warrant it, yet. Nobody is paying to go, yet. Corps are going to take baby steps, ensuring profitability at each step of the way along the ladder to the beyond.

When private industry finally does put us into spaceships and colonies, it will make the future look like Aliens, minus the aliens. Not like Star Trek.

My response would be "because we're not who we were fifty years ago". Priorities have changed, and not for the better, as we all know.

And yes, it's pleasant to have people recognize that there are some things government will invest in that private enterprise WOULDN'T...and along with that, all the things private enterprise has GAINED because government put the money into it. Like Tang, way back then, right up to Memory Foam now...

Niki said that's what industry gained as a byproduct of the effort. And that's the least of what industry gained. Pushing the envelope of what is possible required the development of countless technologies, including the miniaturization of computers.
