Okay, so that explains some of the stuff that was going on earlier today. I couldn't figure it out, searched the boards looking for a reference to it.

Thanks for clarifying.

So the mass of troops was MOTIVATED-- get this over with, WIN, get done, get outta here. You COULD make the case that that's part of why we haven't done too well since the Volunteer Army came along- after the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan are done, the vols will still be IN-- just based somewhere quiet, no longer in combat.

It's been a LONG TIME SINCE pundits observed that the Iraq war had been going on longer than World War II. NOBODY seems really determined to either WIN IT OR END IT.

Yep, I think that would be a big part of it. The other part is public opinion back home. A lot of those volunteers have parents who are just asgung-ho. Now, force a bunch of kids to go - and watch the public opinion at home sway greatly.

ETA: I also agree completely with your other response - it should absolutely be equitable. No rich boy escape clause.

Though,on the topic of fitness - I don't think they should be lowering their standards to meet the average now - that will just lead to ever-degrading standards. Fat is fat, and unhealthy - even if it is the "norm."

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

As far as I know,Rappy started it. Others have just followed suit to mock his delusions of martyrdom.

Well, if we actually reinstated the draft - we very likely would have ended our current wars by now - so Im okay with that, from an anti-war perspective.

Well... no longer in combat THERE. They'd just as likely be in combat somewhere else. The point, after all, isn't to "win" any war, it's to always be at war. Eastasia, Eurasia... which enemy you're fighting is immaterial, as long as you're always in a state of war.

Yup, and AfPak has been going on longer than any war in U.S. history, with no end in sight. As always, a failure to plan results in a plan to fail.

Quick question on the original topic.

There's basically two ways of influencing people, really - Reason and Force.

What happened to Reason, folks ?

Hello,

It is much more difficult to reason people into surrendering their resources and well-being than it is to use force.

Reason is only a practical solution if the object of desire is reasonable.
