A goodly number of them already have tariffs in place on U.S. goods sold in their country, don't they? China, for instance, has tariffs as high as 22% on U.S.-made vehicles, and up to 20% on other items made here and sold in China. Many other countries follow suit, if I'm not mistaken.

The Chinese tariffs on US made SUVs and larger vehicals was in responce to the US bailing out and subsidizing the US auto industry. Plus it they are only set for two years. This is the same argument that the US has made against the Chinese solar panels.

US tariffs on Chinese goods range from about 1% to 8%, not counting the solar panels.

follow along with me, if you will. I know you think you've got to the nub of the problem (fiat currency, The Fed) but please believe me when I say that we have had depressions even while on the gold standard and long before The Fed was ever created. Please, let that sink in for a moment, because if you truly understood what that means you would realize there is an even deeper underlying problem. In fact, the banks, The Fed, and fiat money are SOLUTIONS to the problem... solutions which have gone terribly awry, but not "the problem" itself.

So, if fiat money is not "the problem", what is?

In a nutshell, the real problem is the concentration of more and more money into the hands of fewer and fewer. Since purchases and sales are all made IN MONEY, without widespread distribution of money, purchases slow down. People lose jobs. Those unemployed people buy even less, so even more people lose jobs. It's called the "vicious cycle" and it happens whether the currency is gold, silver, paper, cowrie shells or electrons. As long as currency is isolated in small group, the rest of the economy withers. It's that simple.


How do you re-establish a working economy???

Well, you have to put money back into the hands of people who will go out and buy stuff... that is, Mr and Ms Average American who will spend 100% of their income on food, rent or mortgage, cars, refrigerators, televisions, clothes and so forth... creating a lot of demand (Because there are a LOT of average Americans!) for these products, therefore creating work.

But, because it is politically impossible to wrest money from the wealthy and powerful to re-distribute to Mr and Ms Average American, the government has chosen instead to create NEW currencies, or allowed the banks to create new currencies... silver (1893), paper, personal credit, electrons... and hand it out on the slightest of pretexts just to keep the economy going and keep revolution at bay. At the same time that Mr and Mrs Average American were losing more and more real wealth (income, savings, assets) and the wealth gap ballooned to 1929 proportions (just before the crash in 2008 - THAT should tell you something!) Mr and Mrs Average American were piling on more and more debt and the banks were more than ready to add a few zeros to their accounts.

I'm sure you see the problem with that solution as well as I. It doesn't work, in the long run. The money get distributed, it creates a temporary boom, but the money runs uphill (into the banks) and Mr and Mrs Average American once again are left without money, but this time with a pile of debt.

Also, as I mentioned, even if you distribute money, if you have outsourced all of your manufacturing, the jobs just go overseas.

But the problem remains the same: If you want to create a healthy economy, you need an integrated manufacturing, fiscal and monetary policy. If you're going to tax, don't tax the poor and give to the rich (or corporations), keep the money circulating where most of the people are. If you're going to add money, make sure that money doesn't get added willy-nilly by lending institutions. (British circulating currency TRIPLED between 2000 and 2008. I mean, how screwed is that???) And don't add it at the top... that will only create speculation and bubbles. If you're going to create demand, make sure the jobs get added at home, not overseas. It's an integrated system. You need to keep the currency circulating... jobs to purchase, purchases to jobs. If it loops off into anything else, like antiques or CDOs, it already reduces job-creation potential. It can be managed, but assuming "the market" will solve all of these problems is wishful thinking, since "the market" created the problem in the first place.

U.S. manufacturing orders down sharply

Monday’s American purchasing managers’ index (PMI), based on a survey of managers across the U.S., registered a reading of 49.7 per cent for June, down from 53.5 per cent in the previous month. A reading above 50 per cent indicates economic expansion, but anything below that threshold indicates the economy is contracting.

“This is the biggest sign yet that the U.S. is catching the slowdown that is well under way in Europe and China,” said Paul Dales, a senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

A reading below 47 per cent is considered recessionary, Mr. Dales said, but the “plunge” in the PMI from May is still worrisome given the very large drop in the new orders index to 47.8 per cent from 60.1 per cent a month earlier. This is the first contraction in new orders since April 2009, and larger than any one-month drop seen after the collapse of Lehman Brothers Inc. and the immediate aftermath of the U.S. financial crisis.

Hey Signy,

What you say makes sense.

Hell, I'm practically poor now, really. I may have done well before, but without any overtime (and by overtime, I mean any straight-pay hours over the 24 I was promised per week and NEVER over 40 hours), I stand to make about $832 a month before taxes or $9,984 a year if a better job doesn't come my way. I'm not sure in today's terms what that means for a household of "1", but I can't imagine it's much above the poverty line if at all for a single guy. If I was renting my old apartment I was in 2 years ago AND I didn't pay a dime of income tax, this would leave me with 82 bucks a month for all of my bills and food and other monthly expenses after rent.

Fortunately, the small amount of EIC I should be able to get at that salary should offset the minimal FED income taxes, but I still have to pay the state 3.4% or $340. Also fortunate, I was able to reduce my property taxes from just under $2,300 to just over $1,100, but that is still 14.5% of my gross pay going to just state and county taxes. Throw in homeowner insurance and car insurance for my paid for 17 year old car, and that's another $1,150.

After the mandatory taxes and the mandatory insurance (healthcare be damned, of course), I'll be left with $7934, or 74% of my less than 10k/yr salary. That leaves me with $661 dollars a month to pay bills, groceries, vices and the dreaded unexpected. (I don't have any cable TV package, nor do I have a text or data plan on my cellphone, so as for the judges of my particular "vices" I say to each his/her own).





I really think I understand where you're coming from though when I see the prices for the food I'm stocking overnight at the Mart. 6 hours into my shift I can get pretty hungry sometimes. I see all this "top-shelf" name brand food there and I can't believe the outrageous prices today. I had no idea places were charging $7.49 for a Jack's Pizza, since I've been buying my "Mama Cozi's" pizza for $1.99 at Aldi. After tax, I'd have to work a full hour just to pay for that pizza!!!! I used to get Jack's pizza on sale regularly 5 or 6 for 10 bucks!!!!

At least at Aldi, I can make dinner for 3 1/2 nights in the same hour's worth of work.




I'm done thinking I have the answers Signy. It's been over 7 years since I've been down to the "common" level, and even though I have a much better foothold in life than I did then, with no way to make real money now it's been a rude awakening just how bad things have gotten for the do-withouts. I might have a strong corner-stone now, but I'm a bottom feeder just like anybody else is now. Honestly, it amazes me that people can even make it day to day with prices the way they are.

No wonder 1 in 7 people are on government food stamps.

I was in a similar situation, for a while, working 3 part time jobs. Never once took any govt assistance, though.

But Jack, ramen noodles and pot pies can be bought for dirt cheap. FYI. And store brand sodas are about 1/2 the name brands.

A huge deal was made by the Republicans about the spike in gas prices a while ago, which is actually an annual occurrence, and they were hollering that it was Obama's fault and we needed that pipeline and to drill in Alaska, etc. Neither exists at this time; Presidents can't make the price go up and down; and as usual at this time of year (actually a bit earlier than normal), they've gone down. It was nothing but a political ploy, and of course they shut up the minute prices started going down.

But the whole country isn't where you are; you can choose not to believe that if you want, but in most of the country, gas prices have gone down. Period.

I missed the 3.19 boat, since I'm an honorary Jew and didn't sniff out the REAL DEAL

Really, it doesn't mean fuck all to me since I could walk to work when the weather gets cooler.

The only reason I have to spend gas money besides family parties or barbecues is to go 7 miles out of state to pick up 4 cases of beer, which comically, is the only damn thing besides retirement accounts Illinois taxes cheaper.

I go to two liquor stores right next to each other.....

If the first has an old or repulsive girl working the counter, I walk away with two 30 packs. The same for the second liquor store not 700 feet away...If hot girls are working those hours, than I just walk out with two....


2 cases of beer nets me nearly 8 bucks off of what I'd pay in taxes in my state, the only thing that is taxed more here....

4 cases saves me 16 bucks.....

One of my co-workers, I found out today, pedals his bike 7 miles 1 way for this piece of shit job, and he's really fucking good at it.....

I'm going to talk to my management about him to suggest a merit increase...

I wont be here for long, but a guy who does that and works as well as he does when he comes to the store is probaly a lifer



I fucking love this job as a temp thing, because it keeps me busy the entire time I'm there, but I make zero money that I need to over bills....

I'd love to get this guy a raise

As to gas prices, what I said was accurate: $3.60 would be a gift, HERE.

Just checked; gas prices in San Rafael range from $3.69 at generic stations to as much as $3.89 at name-brand stations...for regular. And those have COME DOWN in the past couple of months! Oops, I just spotted one for $3.59, gotta make note of that and hustle over there! The average gas price in Marin County is $3.81. See why I said $3.60 would be a gift?

They are actually doing BETTER in the City, which is a shock...I wonder why? Over there, it lists MANY stations at $3.59 (of course, it goes up to $4.39 at name-brand stations). Average there is $3.89--due to the fact that most stations in the City are name brand stations no doubt.

a . It's very interesting, you can get gas prices for any county in the country. Judging by the colors, gas prices are far cheaper in the South and Southeast...I found stuff UNDER $3.00 there! They're most expensive on the West Coast, especially California by far.

I found the map interesting in the range...is it cheaper in the South because of off-shore drilling, or accessible ports or something? We've got ports, and we've got a fair amount of drilling in So. Ca., yet we top the highest prices in the country. Demand perhaps? Gawd knows California is the "car state", so maybe that's part of it. Just curious to look at.

Damn near 2 bucks before Obama was Prez....

Sure, it was a political move, and I won't deny that......

I just laugh because Obama doesn't have the same power to make 5 million jobs fall out of the sky at the last minute before the election.

Don't know about where you work, but the black dudes I work with aren't voting for Obama again. They're not voting for Romney either. It's funny how they can be Loud and Clear about both of those points, but then never say what they're actually going to do.

I figure, they'll just stay at home.

Maybe they've got another plan?
