Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

It's about time. At least SOME are finally seeing the light!
Quote:

On my first road trip two years ago, I stopped here to meet with a group of first responders–police officers, firefighters and EMT workers. It turned out to be one of the most memorable meetings I’ve ever had. The high, or low, point was when I asked the group how many of their homes were “under water”–that is, worth less than their mortgages–and of 11 raised their hands. These people were the heart of the American middle class, and they were suffering. “Not much has changed there,” said Kevin Gentry, a firefighter and adjunct law professor at Michigan State, who had gathered members of the group once again to give me an update. “We’re all still under water.”

But, once again, this group of first responders had some very smart insights into the state of the union. “This time I came prepared,” said Pat Moll, a local police officer, a conservative who last time had memorably said that he just didn’t like President Obama, but thought it was more important for the federal government to provide FDR-style jobs programs than work on deficit reduction.

Most of the first responders had voted for the Republican businessman Rick Snyder in the 2010 gubernatorial election. They had voted for a Republican legislature as well. And now they were bitterly disappointed. “We really need to get the economy moving here,” Kevin Gentry said, “and all these guys want to deal with are social issues, and irrelevant stuff. They want to regulate abortion clinics out of business. There was a big fight over a no-helmet law for motorcycle riders. They’re spending too much time on whether to build a second bridge to Canada.”

“I’m not very happy with the governor, either,” said Pat Moll. “He’s attacked our public workers–the teachers and police officers.”

“They’re trying to take away money from the University of Michigan for doing research on things like stem cells,” said Hilary Gentry, who is married to Kevin and works for a state health agency. “And they just banned two state reps from the legislature for using the word ‘vagina.’ How ridiculous is that?!”

“I voted for Snyder but I can’t vote for Romney,” Kevin Gentry said. “He’s running on the same thing that Snyder did–he’s a businessman, but he has a conservative social agenda. And we’ve seen what comes first when they get in office.” Gentry also said that Romney’s opposition to the auto bailout “makes him look stupid in Michigan.” (Although Gentry took pains to point out the difference between the auto bailout, which helped average folks, and the bank bailouts, which only helped the bankers to “line their pockets.”)

“I think,” said Officer Moll, “we’re screwed either way.”

But Obama seemed more acceptable to the group than Romney did. “I’ve never been a Democrat, but I like Obama,” said Ruth Grant, who is an investigating coroner. “All of these politicians are so egotistical in Washington,” she said, and added that she was particularly upset with the Republicans. “They don’t want to pass anything for the people because the President is not on their side and they don’t want him to get credit.”

This conversation reminded me of several I had in North Carolina and Virginia where Republicans had taken control of state legislatures and used their power to focus on social issues. Moderate Republicans in those states, including the business community, were infuriated, too. If any, or all, of these states vote for Obama–especially Virginia–he’s likely to win the presidency…and he’ll do it the old-fashioned way: because people sampled Republican control after the election of 2010 and found it feckless in a difficult economic time.

And that's the way it SHOULD be. While Republicans ran on creating jobs, most of what they've done is ignore jobs, block even things they backed before once Obama agreed, and push their social agenda. In other words, they sold the public a bill of goods, and here at least, it's coming home to roost. I hope it does everywhere.

More jobs = a healthier economy. More people working = more tax revenue going to city, county and state coffers. Which means more $ for first responders and the like.

This country wasn't founded for the purpose of employing fire, police and EMT's. They are the benefit of us all,not our purpose for being.

And it's also the govt's job to spend the tax payer's money wisely, and not fritter it away on a bunch of pork and unnecessary projects, at the cost of leaving essential services at risk. Which is EXACTLY what is going on here.

It's all right here. Care to discuss your lie?

Or are you saying that community organization has no effect at all on changing folk's view of what their personal responsibility towards others in the community (like whether to shoot them or not) is?

And here is your follow up "no claims" thread:

Geezer correctly pointed out , 1kiki, that YOU were the one who made COMPARISONS, out of thin air, which really had zero do to with what my post was about.

Basically, you ignored what was being said, and then went on about your merry, making up an entirely different issue.

Fixed that for ya.
rappy, you have the unenviable reputation of making shit up and then bailing out of the thread when you get called on it. SO, for example, the concept which you shouted from the rooftops that community organizing was the source of violence in Chicago. Or the idea that the financial collapse was the fault of democrats. Here, let me link that for you since you have YET to back up any of your ideas in that thread!
www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=52174

So don't go telling others they're on the short bus because you personally need your own aide just to make it from idea to idea.

Oh, don\t worry little Rappy.

With just a VERY little technology I can track you from post to post, and re-post all your spew. Which BTW I have copied, so it's not going to help you to go back and post-edit, like you often do. It's so quick and easy to do. Don't you just love technology? It takes the work out of work.

And the BEST part is - there's not a damn thing you can do about it. What are you going to complain about - that I quote you? Or that I link your very own posts?

I have to say, this is the one of the best and easiest things, ever. And FUN! We are going to have SO much fun!

Hello,

Such a complaint would be consistent with his past behavior. He is always denying his intentions and re-framing his commentary to create a new reality to replace the old regrettable one where he said what he meant- but what he meant was awful. It's like an adult version of do-over.

However, I think it may be more damaging to you to engage on such a crusade against him. He can't be reached, but he can reach you. From experience, I know that such a crusade merely breeds a furnace of hate which he uses to keep warm, secure in his opposition to the 'other' that you become.

In a way, the answer to your question is yes, but in a way the answer to the same question is no.

Our government was originally designed to protect us from foreign threats. Short of coining currency that was backed by gold, they're really wasn't much more expected of them.

Today is a different world..... I understand that.....

I'm all for paying taxes if I know they're going to good use, but you and I know how many political Rethugs and Demoncrats are way over paid while supposedly "on the job" even though they miss half the votes and how ridiculous their pensions and health insurance plans are after the fact.

Firefighters and Cops, in districts and areas that warrant "hazard pay" should definitely be compensated for it. Those who get to sit around and play cards all day 99% of the time should get paid accordingly, and their retirement benefits should reflect that.

Fortunately for me, I shaved nearly 50% off of my property tax bill on Friday. Since it was a foreclosure and an "invalid sale" it didn't automatically get a drastic reduction in assessed value because of a selling price over 80k less than it sold for 7 years earlier. The burden of proof was on me. In the end, I believe that they still assess the value at about 8-10k more than I could actually sell it for tomorrow, even after I believe I've added 18k of value to the house with only 4k of "parts", but that's a far cry from the 60k more they were claiming it was worth a week ago. I'm more than happy with the assessment.

Come November, I'll be paying a 2nd bi-yearly tax installment that won't even cover the cost for a civillian's purchase of a carton of Marlboros. I just hope the fire-fighters get a gumment discount and can buy at least 3 cartons with that payment.

I salute my Township and my State, and the fine employees they have working there. Having grown up all my life in the corrupt cesspool of deceit which is Illinois, I automatically figured that is how all levels of government work everywhere. Thank You, Indiana, for making a believer out of me. After practically gushing on he and his staff after the results came in, and explaining where my "roots" were, he said "Brother Jack, don't worry about a thing man. If something's wrong, we're here to make it right."

THAT is what government is for. They are the servants of the people's will. Nothing more, nothing less. They aren't supposed to be overpaid celebrities. And for every idiot we know by name out there because of the news, there are probably 1,000 good people like the ones I dealt with at my local assessor's office who just do their job, help the people, and go home to their kids everynight to help with their homework and tuck them into bed.
