Keep the Shiny side up

Somewhere I got a World Wildlife Federation bookmark, and have been using it a couple of years without really looking at it much. I finally read it today. It had this quote on it.

"The difference between animals and humans is that animals change themselves for the environment, but humans change the enviroment for themselves"

Seems pretty pro-wildlife, until you note who said it.

Yup, Cave...I'll bet SHE said it as a brag. And that's what we've done/are doing; changing the whole planet to suit OURSELVES, with no regard to what it's doing to the planet, wildlife, OR, in the end, US.

On top of which, we do it with blind self-interest, like building homes in a flood zone, on a fault line, in places regularly hit by deadly weather, in narrow canyons just ASKING for fires, then rebuilding an rebuilding and rebuilding. And so much more...but I'll spare everyone the rest of what I'd have to say about THAT!

I read it as a general dig an mankind, thinking they could change the environment to suit them, and a more specific dig at Rand for thinking that, and for assuming that either there would be no consequences of doing so, or that we'd just change the consequences to suit us, too.

More irony: She encouraged her followers to smoke cigarettes, because she felt it showed man's mastery over fire. And then she died of lung cancer.

It's not strictly true either.

Animals (and I include insects and birds) also change their environments, they build shelters and nests, they can damn rivers, make burrows, transform a field or a forest into a wasteland.

Conversely, humans can walk lightly on the earth, particularly hunter/gatherer societies which leave few permanent marks on the world.

The truth is, we ARE animals. Just a species who uses tools, not the only one either, just highly developed and who have a highly complex social system, probably not the most effective either.

I agree, Magons, tho' I'd probably say "DEFINITELY" not the most effective. And yes, I recognize the things you enumerated, I just figured it wasn't worth the effort to point them out (for obvious reasons, as this thread illustrates).

What pro-consumers don't take into account is that it's virtually impossible in today's world to exist totally without leaving a footprint. In a society that gave a damn, it would be possible, and it is SOMEWHAT possible even today, if one thinks about what one consumes. Of course, in the black-and-white world of some, it's a "valid" argument, but in reality it has no validity.

The best one can do in today's world is minimize one's footprint, and while that requires some energy, it's not completely impossible. It just requires more effort than those who are determined to keep the status quo and so have stuck their heads DEEP in the ground are willing to make.

Unfortunately, they can't do so in the numbers that inhabit the earth now. If you can figure out how to reduce world population by 99.9%, the remaining 7 million might be able to get by hunting and gathering.

And that's the problem. Even in places like China, where the government does have quite a level of control over the people, the population is still clamoring for more everything: electronics, transportation, appliances, and the energy to run them.
