How the Republicans changed their rules to control their delegates--despite the wills of the voters. Outrageous.

DALEK!

Parties can do that. There is nothing in the law that states political parties even have to hold primaries. As for the will of the voters, well the whole primary system is screwed up already since some states have open primaries and others do not.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.

Nick's argument falls flat, in my opinion. Sure, there's no "law", but the rules exist and should be changed for a good reason, not just to omit specific delegates AT THE TIME. This was all done to exclude the Ron Paul delegates, as were any number of other thing (like initially they were told they wouldn't even be seated unless they voted for Romney). I detailed some of the shit pulled, state by state, in "Ron Paul Kerfuffle" ( http://beta.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=52858). It's pretty amazing...admittedly the Ron Paul delegates pulled some fast ones to "do their thing", but it was intended to give Paul a chance to speak at the convention, nothing more, given how the GOP has tried to sideline him at every turn.

And bear in mind how they were booed and the shouts of "Kick them out!" at the convention itself. None of this was even slightly necessary, as Romney had the nomination wrapped up. It was just to silence the Paul delegates, to (presumably) show unanimous support for Romney and not allow ANY dissenting voices.

It's not democratic, period. Of course, we've learned quite clearly that the GOP is happy to change rules and play dirty any time they feel like it, but this was egregious--driving a bus around and around to keep delegates away from the convention? I mean, come ON!

As I quoted in the other thread:
Quote:

The Romney campaign and his backers on the Republican National Committee spent the past few weeks and days leading up to the convention negotiating, using legal maneuvers and changing the rules to remove or unseat Paul delegates from other states.

The game plan from the Romney side is to attack our side and try to minimize our chances" of nominating Paul, Bunce said. "It's unfortunate they took those tactics. All we really want is respect for the process. We've played by the rules. Now we're being kind of choked out.

What you detailed is exactly what I quoted with regard to one of the delegations:
Quote:

The drama Friday centered around a contentious meeting of the powerful Rules Committee, where Romney's campaign lieutenants, led by his legal counsel Ben Ginsberg, pushed through several changes that would give Romney broad authority over the Republican nominating process.
Quote:

...committee members opposed to Romney's plan drafted two minority reports... Earlier on Friday, Ginsberg and other Romney loyalists tried to neuter the threat of a minority report by raising the threshold of support to 40 percent.
Quote:

Paul supporters, some claiming to have been physically attacked at the convention by Romney supporters, alleged many party and parliamentary rules, as well as state law, were not followed.
Apparently nobody here noticed or bothered to respond to any of that.

As the video showed, this means that no minority candidate delegates (like those for Reagan) will be allowed to vote. Boehner doing what he did is disgusting and shows an obvious disregard for any kind of democratic process.

All these things were done by ROMNEY and his supporters, like he runs the convention or something. In other words, Romney is quite content to use his power in whatever ways he can to get his way (as I suspect he's done with his taxes). Wonder what he'd do to get his way as Prez?

I wholeheartedly agree: Republican bastards!

Oh, sure, they can change their rules. But the ones changing the rules today to get rid of those pesky PaulBots will be whining tomorrow when their pack is the "outsider" group.

The Romneyans are just trying to become the GOP version of the Borg. Resistance is futile, all will be assimilated. Of course, in the GOP/Teabagger tradition of not being able to spell correctly, they'll say "Resistance is Feudal!" and commit yet another inadvertent truth about their party...

And speaking of neofeudalism, here's what it looks like when you have police on armored horses holding back the unruly peasants:
