Vatican backlash over dossier rumours linking Church to 'gay network' and 'sex parties'

The Vatican has rubbished Italian media reports alleging the pope's resignation is linked to a secret dossier claiming there is a 'gay network' inside the clergy.

Italian newspapers have been rife with unsourced reports claiming the secret dossier from three cardinals reveals an underground network of senior clergy who have organised gay homosexual parties and faced blackmail.

La Repubblica newspaper claims the explosive allegations were made in a report into the so-called 'Vatileaks' scandal which was presented to the Pontiff on or around December 17.

But the Vatican today accused Italian media of spreading 'false and damaging' reports in an attempt to influence cardinals who will meet in a secret conclave next month to elect a new pope.

The report came in two volumes, 'hard-bound in red' with the title 'pontifical secret' and was compiled by Spanish cardinal, Julián Herranz; Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi, a former archbishop of Palermo; and the Slovak cardinal Jozef Tomko.

They launched the probe after the Pope's butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested and charged with stealing and leaking papal correspondence revealing how the Vatican was a centre of intrigue and infighting.

La Repubblica claimed Pope Benedict XVI quit because could not face the repercussions of dealing with the 300-page dossier - the first Pontiff to resign in 700 years.

The paper says that the investigation alleges a gay lobby exists within the Church, and has some sort of control on the careers of those in the Vatican.

The report is quoted as saying: 'The cardinals were said to have uncovered an underground gay network, whose members organise sexual meetings in several venues in Rome and Vatican City, leaving them prone to blackmail.

'They included a villa outside the Italian capital, a sauna in a Rome suburb, a beauty parlour in the centre, and a former university residence that was in use by a provincial Italian archbishop.'

La Repubblica says that the cardinals described a number of 'factions' in their report, including one in which individuals were 'united by sexual orientation'.

The newspaper also alleges the dossier states that members of this group were blackmailed by laymen with whom they entertain relationships of a 'worldly nature'

It quoted an unnamed source said to be close to the report's authors: 'Everything revolves around the non-observance of the sixth and seventh commandments.'

The seventh commandment forbids theft, while the sixth forbids adultery, but is linked in Catholic doctrine to the proscribing of homosexual acts, explained the Guardian.

The dossier will stay in a secret papal safe and delivered to Benedict's successor when the Pope leaves office, claims La Repubblica.

The pope himself has said merely that he doesn't have the 'strength of mind and body' to carry on and would resign Feb. 28.

The Vatican claims the reports are an attempt to influence the election of the next pope.

The Vatican secretariat of state said the Catholic Church has for centuries insisted on the independence of its cardinals to freely elect their pope - a reference to episodes in the past when kings and emperors vetoed papal contenders or prevented cardinals from voting outright.

'If in the past, the so-called powers, i.e., States, exerted pressures on the election of the pope, today there is an attempt to do this through public opinion that is often based on judgments that do not typically capture the spiritual aspect of the moment that the church is living,' the statement said.

Seriously though... probably not a bad thing for the Catholic church overall...

The Church is hoping that by forcing him out (and giving him asylum to boot), this will keep him quiet while at the same time giving a new pope a "clean slate" and hopefully washing all the scandals away. There's all this stuff inside the Vatican, and the child molestation scandals all over the world, and the Magdalene Laundries scandals in Ireland, and they're hoping to make it all go away. The pope can't just quit and leave, though - there's active warrants out for his arrest in some of the European Union countries - so he gets to step down and go live in a monastery conveniently located within the confines of Vatican City, where he's got complete immunity from every other foreign government and can't be arrested or compelled to testify.

Looks like the Catholic Church is giving up the Pope for Lent. And can anyone say why they shouldn't give up the whole idea of a pope in the first place? I asked some Catholics, and they said they need the pope "to lead us, to tell us how to live"; I asked them if the bible couldn't perform that function, but then they just unfriended me...

Jimmy Savile and the Cardinal: Britain's top Catholic cleric was friend of disgraced TV host

26 Feb 2013 00:00

The snap, taken six years ago, emerged after Cardinal Keith O’Brien quit amid allegations of “inappropriate acts” towards fellow priests

Grinning and giving a thumbs-up, Britain’s most senior Catholic cleric poses with his friend, disgraced paedophile Jimmy Savile.

The snap, taken six years ago, emerged last night after Cardinal Keith O’Brien quit amid allegations of “inappropriate acts” towards fellow priests.

The photo was taken in Edinburgh in 2007 as fund-raiser Savile and the cardinal unveiled a £375,000 vehicle for the disabled.

The pair first met in the 70s, when O’Brien was a priest in Kilsyth, North Lanarkshire – and worked with a friend of Savile’s mum.

Another priest at Kilsyth at the time has been suspended following claims of abuse against two young victims.

It was Cardinal O’Brien who ordered the investigation last September.

When Savile’s vile secrets became known, the cardinal called for him to be stripped of his papal knighthood, awarded in 1990.

Cardinal O’Brien quit just 24 hours before he was due to fly to Rome to help choose the next pope.

The cardinal, who missed celebrating mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh on Sunday, had been due at the Vatican today to join the conclave to elect Pope Benedict’s successor.

Only a few days ago he appeared on TV showing the ballot paper he would be using.

His sudden departure means Britain will be unrepresented in the process as he was the only cardinal in the British Catholic churches.

Announcing his decision not to take part, he said: “I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me – but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor. Besides, I have an appointment to minister to a band of merry teenage strippers."

Forgive me Kwic if I'm not "up" on the newest news.... but I have no idea what you're talking about with a public scandal with the current pope.

It doesn't surprise me though...

I've never been "confirmed" Catholic, and I rarely go to church besides weddings and funerals, but nothing better has come up. I'm sure unless I'm not really bored when I'm 50+ I'll be going to church regularly, whatever the denomination.

I'm probably not the right person to ask about "the pope", with my limited knowledge about the Bible, but I don't see the big deal about him. Seems as useless as the Kings/Queens/Princesses/Princes in the UK. Nothing but a flashy figurehead.

It's actually sick how much money Christian Religions make per year and pay zero taxes on. I'm sure if I looked into it, it would be equally sick how much money other religions do the same.

I think it's time Jesus came back down and tossed over all the altars and used his magic laser beam eyes to paint churches in the US to be targeted by a massive air-strike by Jehovah.

I guess I don't see the point of treating this as news.

So the pope resigns ... who cares much really, except ignorant followers? And anyone who's shocked at hierarchical intrigue and corruption hasn't been paying attention to the church's history during the last 2000 years.

Now the fact that children and adults were raped and there was significant church cover-up, and the fact that that cover up may have also involved governments who maintained Catholicism as an official 'state religion' (add yet another argument for separating church and state) --- THAT'S newsworthy.

How did it happen? Who's responsible? And how can this be prevented in the future?

But those aren't topics you'll see PN cover.

Any adult raped by a priest got what they probably wanted for years or even decades.....

Please don't bring adults into this....

Unless you have proof of a 5 on one preist rape of a grown human, while the doors were chained during a weekend long "lock-in", please don't sully the "truth" by making up fabricated stories.

No adults were unwillingly raped.

I can't speak for today's kids, but I was 13 back in '93. If I were being raped, I would have torn off any dick I saw with my hands and/or teeth, and I was only 100lbs.

Any adult who allows that to happen to them, and doesn't have significant unexplained bruises and/or scratches that would be easily explained to the authorities wanted it.

I'm not saying that adults don't get raped, but they surely don't get raped by the church. What a stupid place to do it.

That comment was totally asinine....

I'm saying that no adult goes to church and gets raped by a priest....

Are we living in Salem while witches are burning and drowning all around us????

WTF 1kiki??????

Do you really view the ENTIRE world this way?????

Is every man, woman and child who goes to church setting themselves up for a gang bang by priests in their holes?

I would think, at this point in time, that the "bad" priests were already moved to a cozy desk job, and that rape of even a helpless kid today would be met with "the wrath of god", simply as a "PR move" from the Vatican.

If you're really living in a world where adults get raped by Catholic priests in 2013, you're probably just sad that the Mayan's were wrong about 2012......

I don't know about 1kiki, but I never said every priest was a repressed or depraved rapist with homosexual or pedophile tendencies. (Which, btw, that's a classic example of a strawman fallacy)

You said something about how if a rape victim isn't covered in bruises, they must have wanted it. When my brain starts to hurt because of something someone else said, I have the inexplicable urge to inflict equal amounts of pain upon everyone else around me.

I believe myself to be entirely justified in my most righteous quest.

Not even if they’re, say, locked in the room? Threatened? Very small or weak compared to the priest? Pope Benedict Comes Out as Gay

Pope Benedict XVI announced today that he has resigned his papacy because he is gay and "could no longer live a lie."

In a statement released to Italian news media the 85-year-old departing pontiff says he is relieved to be coming out after eight decades in the closet and urged the Catholic Church and other faiths to accept homosexuality as a natural part of God's creation.

"Like many gay Catholics, I have been forced for too long to choose between my faith and my identity," the statement reads. "My profound love for my beloved church compelled me to lie to myself and to my fellow believers about a basic component of my humanity.

"I deeply regret that deception. I have not been honest with the Church, and for that reason I decided that I could not continue my role as leader of the world's one billion Catholics.

"Now that I have been liberated of this secret, I wish to express my belief that homosexuals are equal in the eyes of God. I beseech the Catholic Church to reconsider its ban on gay clergy and become a leading force in the struggle for gay rights."

Gay the Pray Away
Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation on Feb. 11, becoming the first pontiff since the Middle Ages to resign his post. His stated reason was to retire before the ravages of old age left him unable to complete his duties.

Yet rumors have been swirling in Rome since the announcement that the decision instead had something to do with homosexuality at the Church's highest levels.

There have been newspaper reports of a secret "gay conclave" within the Vatican that visited local prostitutes and was thereafter blackmailed.

But there has been no indication that the scandal touched the pope himself, and today's news has come as a surprise to most following the story.

Benedict resigns his papacy today, and will technically cease his duties as pope at 8 p.m. Central European Time. It had been anticipated that he would continue on as a "Pope Emeritus," but given the Church's ban on homosexuality his future role is now unclear.

Say it Ain't So Joe
Reaction to the Pope's statement has ranged from shock to excitement to despair. Some conservative figures in the Catholic Church have even expressed outrage at the move, suggesting Benedict should have remained in the closet.

"Look everyone knows that the only people who sign up for a lifetime of living in all-male dormitories with no possibility of marriage are gay men," says Phyllis Gates, a conservative Catholic blogger. "But why did he have to actually say it? Denial was working so well for us."

However for Rick Santorum, one of America's most prominent anti-gay Catholic politicians, denial is still alive and well.

"I don't believe him," Santorum says from his home in Washington, D.C. "Homosexual activists have clearly compromised Pope Benedict through blackmail or brainwashing or some sort of queer subterfuge.

"He's not gay. He can't be gay. That's just not possible. He's just pretending for some reason. And it's my job to figure out what that reason is."

Pride and Joy
While Santorum is looking for evidence of a gay conspiracy, however, LGBT activists are celebrating the Pope's pro-gay rights message.

"It's heartening to see a leading person in the Catholic Church finally take a stand for equality," says Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign. "The church has hitherto been one of the most powerful anti-gay rights organizations in the world.

"Although it's a shame that he was forced out because of his orientation, and of course the rampant pedophilia, we're all hoping that Pope Benedict's words of tolerance will resonate with people of faith around the world."

Gay Catholic blogger Andrew Sullivan, who speculated yesterday about a homosexual relationship between Pope Benedict and his personal aide, was phlegmatic towards the news.

"I wish I could take some credit, but honestly anyone could have predicted this. No women, fabulous hats, and Prada shoes? This is the gayest institution in the world."

I'll give you that 1kiki.....

I'm no "Arnold" in his glory years, but nobody f'ks wit me either.

Every priest I've ever seen, (God forgive me), I could beat the shit out of....

I'm no Henry Rollins in his hey-day either, but even though he's got nearly 15 years on me, I wouldn't feel too bad about my chances in a 6 minute boxing match with him after seeing him most recently on Sons of Anarchy.

And about the "young and naive thing".....

I guess it's a good thing that I never joined the boyscouts, I only went to church on Christmas and Easter and my Wrestling coaches in HS were straight as an arrow.....

I've exponentially gotten smarter since I was 10. Even more when I was a freshman at 13.....

Not that I'm really worried about my past if I had to do it over.....

Any dick stuck in this mouth would have been bitten off like Mike Tyson bites ears off.

Actually, I'm really glad that neither of my parents bothered to pretend they were "religious" all of those years they blazed through the 10 commandments....

I find it funny that they both look into it now... but to each their own....

All I can say is that nobody ever got taken advantage on my watch.... My brothers or my friends.

I've never had a "record" but I would put-a-preist-down if I had proof of that going on anywhere around me.
