No overtime, no benefits....

So... I understand how the other half lives now...

Pretty shitty, I must say... My 2 week check after taxes 3 years ago was more than I make in 2 1/2 months now and I don't have any insurance.

Honestly, I don't know how you do it. I'm still about 2 years away from having to rely on credit cards to pay bills, but in the mean time living like a pauper, buying discount beer and rolling my own smokes, buying all of my clothes at Goodwill and not having a dime to pay for a fun night out or the occasional steak dinner is murder..... forget that I will have spent the remainder of my retirement accounts paying for taxes by November of 2014 if a good job doesn't come up before then.

Something is wrong when a man who owns his own home free and clear can't even afford the taxes after bills.....

At the very least, given the fact that my most current TV is 6 years old and I don't own a new piece of clothing in at least that long, I can't even pay my bills.

The problem is that even though I make 9k a year now, my property tax burden on top of my income, SS and medicaid burden make up 1/3 of what I make in the year or more.

So I've resigned myself to foodstamps....

It should be retroactive when it kicks in, and I should get the full 200 a month based off my salary and income.

I'm sorry, working people, that I had to apply. I made up my mind 2 weeks ago when I saw an overloaded shopping cart of good looking food at Aldi completely paid for on EBT....

My montly food budget for the last year is about 80 bucks. That buys a whole lot of noodles, canned chili and frozen pizza....

If I had 200 bucks to spend I could make real meals for myself. Not only that, but that's 80 bucks less a month I don't take out of the pitiful amount left in my retirement account.

Being debt free with a paid for house at 32 was cool last year or so.....

In August, I'll be 34, that much closer to not-debt-free, alone, and with no job prospects....

God help me, I joked back in 2009 after we all partied when we were laid off that we're now Democrats by default....

What have I become?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Jack, so sorry that your job is being cut back. Unfortunately, I don't see economic improvement this year. You can thank the"job creators" for the situation... their REAL job is to eliminate jobs, so why are we so surprised when that's what they do?

Anyway, you really do have my sympathy.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

6-ix - I feel for you, but for god's sake, whatever made you think you were one of the rich and powerful, instead of one of us worker bees? Just b/c your ego demanded that you call yourself one of them, didn't mean they were going call you that, too. Ya know? So, drop your ego off somewhere, and get with reality - none of us are that valuable. It will save you a lot of pointless grief. Life's tough enough as it is just getting through it without dragging that silly whining ego load around too.

I feel ya, Jack, I really do. My new gig nets me less than unemployment was paying me, but I gladly took the job because I feel the *need* to actually do work. It's about 2/3 what I was making last year, and less than half what I made before that.

Maybe things will get better, but I'm not holding my breath.

Drat. I was hoping things were better than that.

I don't know how old you are, but if you're anywhere near 50 you're doing extremely well to have been unemployed and then have found a job. Either of those (50/ unemployed) automatically cut a lot of people off from being hired in these times.

I hope you can find a better job in the near future.

You're right. And Austin is worse about that than most places, since it's a "young" city - we have a near-ceaseless supply of college grads coming out every few months, young, dumb, and willing to work for a pittance, or for no money at all as unpaid interns.

It was three months before I got even so much as a call back. That first callback netted me the job. I nailed the interview, apparently. And they love me. I've already shown them inefficiencies - multi-thousands of dollars' worth - in three key areas of their warehouse operations. So I'm moving up after two weeks on the job. :)

You don't know how relieved that makes me feel.

Oh, and I almost forgot - congratulations!

MAGONSDAUGHTER

Sorry to hear of everyones woes.

A lot of things are out of individual control, despite what some idealists believe. If you have a shit economy with lots of workers competing for the same low paid jobs, things are not going to be easy.

And there you have it, being poorly off does not equal stupid or lazy, it simply means you pushing against the tide of things out of your control.
