I am not overall fond of the site this is from, but Katz apparently managed to independantly wrap his mind around a concept I been pushin behind for years, and his take on it is worth a read.

Well yes - and while first we accuse them of mental illness and ostracise them, and if they still don't toe the line, off to the gulags right ?

And I think by now the relationship between letting them do shit like this to kids, and that same shit then being directed at us once they get all the kinks worked out is clear enough I don't have to go into detail on that all over again - but I will say it's why I very very cautious in attempting to score better and more available mental health care for the population as a whole, cause it'd be all too easy to turn THAT one around into Soviet style re-education wouldn't it, neh ?

As to WHY children are viciously rebelling in increasing numbers, perhaps it has maybe a little, tiny, wee bit to do with HOW WE TREAT THEM, hmmm ?

It's tricky. The ape brain tells us that parents need to be able to exert authority over their kids. But socially our higher minds can look at a situation think that if parents can't direct their kids behaviour in a constructive direction without force, then maybe those parents aren't a good fit for their kid's personality and vice versa.

Not meaning social services, which can be corrupt and abusive. But sometimes it does take a village. Kids before the 1970s and 1980s used to be more free range, interacting more with adults all around their neighborhood and finding mentors in many places - though, physical punishment was also more popular, and molesters hid in plain sight. But I also wonder if we're not TOO paranoid as well.

Don't have kids don't plan to. Just posing questions for people of all generations on this board because I suspect, depending on generation, we might all have a different take.

There's no shame in farming some of it out to those who know and trust to handle it - Kira's mother fully admits there's issues with the kid she can't even figure out, much less handle, and she trusts me to help the little monster through them, although admittedly I still find the notion of her wanting a sex-change (cause of that icky stuff about once a month) downright hilarious and know better than to take it seriously.

Not to mention I've been tapped to give my ex's soon to be bambino the "Villain 101" class, although I am concerned about incidently/accidently corrupting her.

And sometimes, in the case of Revs kiddo, leaving well the hell enough ALONE is the best answer.

I consider it out social and moral responsibility to offer a shoulder to lean on (even if rejected) to a parent obviously out of their depth, as the consequences otherwise are much, much greater down the line.

This above all - HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE DETERMINES WHAT THEY BECOME.
