WASHINGTON (AP) -- A gospel singer who says God delivered him from being gay did not perform at a concert the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

The Washington Post ( http://wapo.st/15oFZCe ) reports singer Donnie McClurkin was scheduled to perform Saturday night to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, but several gay rights activists objected ahead of the event.

Doxie McCoy, a spokeswoman for Mayor Vincent Gray, says the Grammy-winning singer decided not perform because the purpose of the event was to bring people together.

But in a video statement linked to McClurkin's Twitter page, he says he was "asked not to attend" and was uninvited. McClurkin says there should be freedom of speech "as long as it's done in love."

So. Skipping over the likelyhood of being cured of Gay by God, Is this discrimination against Mr. McClurkin for claiming it happened to him?

After looking him up just a bit, it appears he's not any kind of extremist and not prosletyzing over much; he does talk about God having "saved" him from the "curse" of homosexuality, but mostly he talks about acceptance and love. So, knowing as little as I can find in a quick search, I'm guessing it's not because he was intending to cause problems by forcing his agenda. In which case, in my only-slightly-educated-on-the-issue opinion, it was wrong to ask him not to attend.

Most blacks aren't too fond of " the gays ", so my guess is that being gay in the first place was what got him booted. 'Ex' gay, or gay, still the same thing, to some folk.

Oh, bull-fucking-SHIT! That is pure racism; I know many African-Americans who are gay, they're just people, and to say "most" African-Americans are homophobic is...well, that's just bull-fucking-SHIT!

Gawd, I HOPE that's just Rap in goad mode, it crosses my eyes to think he really believes that. Then again...

Actually, it's true. Don't get pissed @ ME for saying it, Niki.

But, as usual, don't believe me.

- The same voters who turned out strongest for Barack Obama also drove a stake through the heart of same-sex marriage.

Seven in 10 African Americans who went to the polls voted yes on Proposition 8, the ballot measure overruling a state Supreme Court judgment that legalized same-sex marriage and brought 18,000 gay and lesbian couples to Golden State courthouses in the past six months.

Nope. It's just me in truthsome mode. I'm not saying I agree with that view ( I don't, actually ) or think it's right, but it is what it is.

Unfortunately, this is true around here as well. When D.C. was debating legalizing same-sex marriage, some of the strongest opposition was from Black ministers and their churches. Also a lot of assaults on and murders of Black transgender folks by other Blacks.

My guess is ATL has a bit larger black population than where Niki resides. There was a widely publicized case ( I think I posted it on here ) of a black gay male who was beat up by other black guys, because he was gay. Fortunately, they were caught.

( So, Niki... is THIS racism ? )

Here -

Members of an Atlanta street gang were filmed beating a man who was brutally assaulted because “faggots” were not allowed in their neighborhood, according to a videotape of the apparent hate crime.

The 30-second clip, posted today to the Worldstar Hip Hop web site, was shot outside a grocery store in Atlanta’s Pittsburgh neighborhood. The business, located at 1029 McDaniel Street SW, is a popular congregating spot for members of the Pittsburgh Jack City Gang (or “PBJC”). The group has also used the name “Jack City 1029.”

After being provided a link to the video, an Atlanta police spokesperson told TSG that the clip had been forwarded to the department’s gang division as well as the unit that investigates bias crimes against the LGBT community. Officer Kim Jones added that she was researching whether a police report was generated at the time of the attack (which investigators believe took place over the weekend).

As seen above, the video opens with an unseen cameraman and a second man outside the grocery store. The second man announces, “Round one. Jack City. No faggots.” Then, after a diminutive man exits the grocery, an assailant approaches him from behind and delivers a brutal punch to the side of the victim’s head. The man’s cell phone flies from his hand and he crumples to the ground.

Homophobes come in all colors. Prop 8 was a con game; I guess if you only read the propaganda you never find that out. This from an African-American who voted FOR it, to her chagrin:
Quote:

According to the exit polling, there's enough blame to go around. Don't forget the 49 percent of Asians who voted for Prop 8. And the 53 percent of Latinos who fell in line for it too. And then there is the white vote in support of 8. Slightly under 50% percent of them, a group representing 63% of California voters, voted "Yes" on 8. Last I checked blacks held little sway over all of those groups.

So who did? For starters, the churches, religious leaders and advocacy groups in support of 8 were a very formidable force. Surveys showed religion played a major role in voter's decisions. I told a friend the day after the election, that I thought the arguments needed to be much stronger to answer the lingering questions Prop 8 boosters had leveled, disingenuously or not. Even I had some personal misgivings before casting my vote against.

Perhaps gay rights activists needed to better explain how a No vote wouldn't force churches to perform gay marriage ceremonies. And how a No vote wouldn't affect schools or teach children about gay marriage.

In the coming weeks, those of us who are standing against Proposition 8 -- including, I'm sure, millions of blacks nationwide -- are all going to need unity as we lobby, fight and advocate for either a reversal of this amendment or a new battle in 2010. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/raymond-leon-roker/stop-blaming-californ

They did an excellent job in California; unfortunately, you can't fool all the people all the time. Californians knew how we were screwed, and the story's been out for a long time now, but we realize you don't care about facts so won't read it: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2013/03/26/how-proposit
ion-8-passed-in-california-and-why-it-wouldnt-today
/

"All five of California’s most populous counties — Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino and San Diego — voted in favor of Prop. 8....

Looking at Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) polling data, it’s clear that shortly after Prop. 8 passed, sentiment about gay marriage began to change. In October 2008, 50 percent opposed gay marriage. By May 2012, 54 percent of Californians supported same-sex marriage."

It was the Big Four--the four very Republican counties of So. Ca. who overwhelmed the vote; Prop 8 was a con job.

Homophobia comes in all colors, but of course I realize Rap can see three people say something and will automatically assume "most" of that group of people believe it.

His blithe statement that it's because this guy was Black that they un-invited him is what's absurd...he "was scheduled to perform" in the first place, remember? And gosh, I'm pretty sure they knew he was Black at the time, don'tcha think?

Niki - your skills of comprehension need work.

I never said "ALL" , and I did in fact back up my claim w/ facts, which you STILL ignore.

7 of 10 blacks voted for Prop 8. Those are the numbers. Yes, that's 70%. Not 100%, and sure, there are pockets of voters who went the other way, but that doesn't change the over all fact.

NOR does you claiming Prop 8 was a con game change anything. They voted how they voted. Just accept that, and move on. ( I could just as easily claim that a vote for Obama was a complete con game as well. )

Also, voting against gay marriage isn't synonymous with " homophobia ", in the least. Many feel that civil unions are just fine, if they afford all the same rights and benefits found w/ married couples.

BUT THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT! Dammit, you always do that ! Ignore the primary issue, and then segue into a slightly similar, but not really anywhere near side bar, and claim that it some how makes your case.

It doesn't.

A very large segment, more than 1/2, less than 100% , of blacks aren't favorable to the idea of gays in their community.

I'm not applauding that fact, I'm not waving it in your face, NOR am I saying that such views are carved in stone, never to be altered. It's just a FACT.

Please, don't shoot the messenger.

Oh, almost forgot this gem...

I NEVER said that ' because this guy was black ' was why he was uninvited. Geeez! LARN HOW TO REED!!!! ( hee hee )

seriously, you must drink from the same venom glass as 1kiki, so wrapped up in this false narrative against me about blacks. A black guy, scheduled to perform at a MLJ Jr event ? REALLY ?

They knew he was Black when he was invited; they also knew he was gay. Later he became "ex-gay" and thanked God for "saving" him from being gay. Then they uninvited him. "They" who are putting on the event to honor MLK are Black. What's your "logic", exactly??

You said "most" Blacks... (I never said you said all). But again, your logic fails:
Quote:

7 of 10 blacks voted for Prop 8. Those are the numbers.

That is what you put up as showing "Most blacks aren't too fond of " the gays "". Then you turn right around and write
Quote:

Also, voting against gay marriage isn't synonymous with "homophobia"

You're contradicting yourself. Can't use the numbers to claim one thing, then claim it doesn't say that...and yes, "homophobia" IS "racism".

And that's the last I will be playing your game.
