More information has become available on the background of one of the cops involved in the situation.

I am getting some distinct cowboy cop vibes off this one based on his 2006 comments about "convincing the court about being in fear of life and safety" as a defense for shooting at someone with a BB-gun. It almost sounds like he plans this kind of thing - how to cover my ass with legal technicalities when I screw up.

It also fits a profile that Frem has established of reactionary Afghanistan war vets coming back and joining the police.

Except none of those reasons applies to me, even in the slightest.

Ya might want to see to that.

Byte - ya don't need to be a returning war vet to fall into the thrill seeking, adrenaline junkie brand of cop. If anything, it could be the guy who never MADE it to the military, trying to prove himself... There's more than 1 type of cop out there in the 'verse.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Yes. But in this case, a particular sort of reactionary war vet seems to apply.

Well, doubt he'll get fired. Probably get put on paid administrative leave for a couple weeks, then sleaze back into active service harrassing latinos in the SF area. After all, the other officer he was with was a captain of the force, I believe, and you don't usually get there unless you've been around a while and made some friends, so they'll cover for the new guy to protect their buddy.

Report: Deputy shot boy before partner left car

"SANTA ROSA, CA (AP) — A 13-year-old boy was fatally wounded
by a California sheriff’s deputy before a second officer was able
to get out of a patrol vehicle and take cover, investigators said,
bolstering accounts of just how quickly the shooting occurred.

"The trainee remained behind the wheel of the cruiser Oct. 22 while
Deputy Erick Gelhaus confronted Andy Lopez, who was carrying a
pellet gun that resembled an assault rifle, Santa Rosa police Lt. Paul
Henry told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa in a story Tuesday.

"In a matter of seconds, Gelhaus ordered the boy to drop the weapon
then opened fire before the trainee could take cover behind an open
door of the car, Henry said.

"The trainee’s account bolsters eyewitness reports and dispatch re-
cords that only 10 seconds or so elapsed between Gelhaus confronting
the boy and the shooting.
..... "

He should get a promotion.
He was very efficient.
