Yup, right to lie, not right to life. The anti-choice groups have become more and more powerful in our government and in the courts. Now, the Susan B Anthony List (SBA List), one extreme anti-choice group, is involved in a scandal in the state of Ohio over false political ads. The group filed a challenge with the Supreme Court asking for the right to lie (hey, it worked for FauxNews, why not?), and the Supreme Court on Friday said it will hear the challenge to the Ohio law that forbids candidates and issue groups from making false campaign statements ( http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/3517.21). The Supreme Court's decision to hear the case may well strike down the Ohio law, which is designed to ensure the public trust is not violated.

SBA List claims that not being allowed to lie is a violation of its right to free speech. SBA List ran a smear campaign against a democratic candidate for office, which was glaringly false. The Ohio Election Commission became involved after the candidate filed a complaint about the false ads. SBA List challenged the rulings of two lower courts, that upheld the state’s right to report on the truthfulness of political advertising.

"SBA List claims that not being allowed to lie is a violation of its right to free speech."

And the Supremes will probably agree with them, holding their noses all the while. As much as I don't care for the radical anti-abortion crowd and their tactics, they got as much right as anyone to show misleading ads, and if you watch TV at all during election season, you know there's plenty from all sides.

I have to admit that it would be interesting if they upheld the Ohio law and other states implemented similar ones, since that'd give whoever held the state Attorney General's post a great opportunity to try and censor the opposing party's political ads. Lawyers would make a friggin' fortune.

...I note that the ads the SBA List wanted to put up about Congressman Driehaus never appeared because he threatened to sue the billboard company. Apparently Mr. Driehaus is not a strong supporter of the First Amendment.
