Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I'd rather have smart and sane over stupid and crazy any day. Smart and sane doesn't blunder into nuclear exchanges b/c someone thinks they're John Wayne. Or carrying out god's will.

Yes, he took Crimea entirely by manly force. Well, that and Crimea was a swooning maiden who (nevertheless) leapt many feet towards him before gratefully falling into his arms.

Oh, and on the topic at hand...

It's pretty damn clear that folks here do NOT understand the Russian mindset at all.

See, they place a MUCH higher priority on competence than benevolence - sure, yes, Putin's a dick, and a hardass, but they LIKE that sorta thing, a strong leader, in their concept, comes with a bit of oppression and corruption, it's the nature of the goddamn business (and not at all that dishonest of an assessment) and therefore they tolerate it, bitch a lot, but tolerate it all the same... unless it becomes too much to bear and destructive to their country, at which point they END your ass, and quick like.

This isn't like America, where they tolerate seemingly "benevolent" milquetoast motherfuckers who never seem to accomplish anything, a leader like that in their country would be bereft of support if not outright curbstomped by both their people AND their military, which is comprised of the-people anyways, they don't take well to gentle people in charge and never have, as a cultural thing.

That Americans, including the ones nominally in-charge, do NOT understand this, is characteristic of a blatant, blind ignorance and pretense of American exceptionalism which serves no purpose but to make us look like fucking MORONS to the rest of the world (Bolton is considered a fucking CLOWN in every country but ours), and gets our troops hung out to dry in untenable positions which GET THEM KILLED...

But of course, the rightwing Loooves watching our soldiers get slaughtered, it's a handy excuse for their pretend moral outrage as they beg for the nuclear armageddon they think will ascend them into heaven, don't you know - even though by demonstrable conduct it's more likely those pearly gates open to a firey pit and the howling laughter of a blind, mad God.

Sick bastards, the lot of em - Modern Conservatism is a mental ILLNESS, damn near indistiguishable from Sociopathy.

How would you know? Like the many other phrases and words scattered through your mind, you have absolutely no idea what it is. Let's start with something simple: The definition.

I'll bet you can't provide a definition for the word "fascism". You'll bail out of this thread, just like you bailed out of the thread where I asked you to define the word "freedom". It's a pity you spend so much time talking about - and being yanked by- words that you can't even define. Because examining what's in that brain of yours? Why, it might cause you to think, and what a horror THAT would be!

"I may have used colorful words but the career highlights I pointed out are all facts - I really don't see where the fantasy comes in."

Well, OK, let's break down one of your posts as an example.

Putin is at the peak of his power and strength and hubris. opinion

He took the presidency back after his first run, when a less egotistical person 'mind-reading' could have faded into easy retirement.

My understanding is it was marred by controversy a reference would be nice - big shock, we could say that about almost every election with so much at stake.

Just recently he bailed us out of our line in the sand talk in Syria possibly and made us look silly on the world stage. no, we did that

He showed the world that Russia could run a successful olympics. as have many countries in the past, including the erstwhile Yugoslavia, but you just hold it against Putin because ...

He just just annexed Crimea for breakfast or did they democratically and voluntarily vote to join Russia in overwhelming numbers ... and had the nerve and idiocy to do it with troops that didn't have any RU insignias, like he was fooling us, a big joke. and yet, there is no proof, only unsupported rumor, which you choose to credit as fact

That kind of juvenile thinking opinion on that scale mixed with his resources is dangerous. opinion He essentially told the rest of the world to suck it. you DO know that Nazis staged a coup against a democratically elected government in Kiev - right? and you're OK with that?

This guy is more dangerous now than he's ever been. opinion

If you need pages of detail and geo-political schematics to see that then go for it. it would be helpful to have more than your opinion

I understand that it's probably even fun and rewarding to connect all the dots and the more dots the better. I don't feel that way. so, you just free-hand draw whatever picture you want to see?

What I get out of this is Putin is hubric, and egotistical and made us look bad (apparently we had nothing to do with that!), and being successful is even worse for some reason, and he took Crimea by force and he has some NERVE!, and he's juvenile and dangerous and there's no geopolitical narrative to back this all up. So there.

But the Kiev Nazis that reasonable people might think are part of this problem get a pass.

You know who had imagination?

Copernicus
Einstein
Newton
Adam Smith
Karl Marx
Max Westenhöfer and Alister Hardy
The first people who learned how to make fire
The first people who learned how to smash open shellfish and bones for food

Those people saw something and did something that nobody else saw or did. They lived in the same world, they looked at the same stuff, but they saw something entirely different.

When YOU look at the world, you seem to be doing a lot of projection. All you're seeing is yourself.

Are you saying I'm only seeing myself in Putin? Boy, that needs clarity. Do you see yourself in Putin? *worried*
Projection? Do you mean "opinion?" This all started when you asked for our opinions, remember?

I mean that you filter your view of the world through a screen of fears, desires, and biases so heavily that it seems that very little of the original signal gets thru. What you see is what you've been taught to see, or what you're afraid of seeing, or what you hope to see. There's no imagination in doing that, just "projection"... you can either think of it as a psychological term or a mathematical one: a forward extrapolation of model already embedded in your head.

Quote:

On a personal note...you are simply and without peer, the most conceited and condescending person on this site (or any other than I've been on). You think no one else can see the same things you do which are in fact, so bloody obvious to many of us that the idea of running around and proclaiming them like we are the first or only one to think of them, would be too pretentious, and honestly; too without class to do so.

Did you predict the financial meltdown? Because I used my imagination, and I did.

Did you understand that the Iraq invasion was going to be a failure? Because, yanno, I sat down and I used my IMAGINATION and realized that a united, democratic, secular Iraq was NEVER going to be in the cards. (The relatively irreligious Saddam-following Sunnis having brutally dominated the political and economic life, democracy was not in their interest with payback being such a bitch and all; the Shias far too religious to tolerate secularism; and the Kurds who have been fighting for independence for decades and WITH THEIR OWN SOURCE OF OIL would never want to share that resource in unity).

Did you realize that all we were getting in the press was a senseless drumbeat to war, and that WMD was just- literally- a made-up excuse for invasion?

Did you realize ahead of time that invading Libya was not about deposing a brutal dictator or R2P (It never is!) and all about oil and gold?

Have you made any predictions about Ukraine? I have a couple of threads devoted just for that.

Brought any new information to the table on the environment? Climate shift? (By the way: we're doomed.)

I bring issues and problems that I'm thinking about to this website (How do we develop a new society that isn't prey to the old failings? What do we use in place of money? What is the problem with the paradigm of efficiency?) for insight and input. When I come here to discuss, I come here to discuss vigorously. That means having a discussion with very high standards.

Quote:

You constantly lecture, belittle, talk down to... I wonder who the hell you are talking to half the time,
Sometimes I'm just talking to myself... putting ideas "out there" helps me synthesize them. Sometimes I just predicting in a public way, kind of a real-time test of the model that I'm running. Sometimes I'm actively looking for insight. At other times, I'm bringing information.
Quote:

and the other half I wonder who you think frequents this site. You must think everyone else here is a complete moron, or unless we brag and boast we must not be very bright. Does that make you feel smarter? To think less of others? Ironically, what you are doing is exercising very limited imagination.
I come here looking for someone to change my mind. Since I've thought about things and discussed things rigorously elsewhere, and I know quite a number of people offline who're a helluva lot smarter than I am... people who've lived in multiple conflict nations, who know many languages, who've done more and thought more than almost anyone from the USA... it will take a novel, tight, or insightful argument to knock one of my ideas out of the arena. But -believe it or not - many posters have. The list would be too long to mention, but FREM, KIKI, BYTE, MAGONS, CHRIS, TONY, MAL4, and HKCAVALIER have all said things that have really stayed with me and changed my views. It is still the most free-thinking diverse website I've ever been on. Siggy - I refuse to play your little games, and go chasing down that rabbit hole to define common words which have varied meanings an nuances, depending on their usage and the context.

Further more, I'm the one being falsely tagged as " fascist ", when nothing could be further from the truth. Those who support Obama are the true fascists here. YOU look it up first, and YOU figure out what in the hell you're talking about, if you or anyone is going to point fingers.

Let's leave aside whether the idea that someone who supports Obama (or Bush, for that matter) is a fascist. It's hard to know whether or not that's true until one has a good grasp of what the word means. Yes, I know that the word has many nuances, btu I have a pretty solid (and short) definition, and I wonder if you have one too. Or not.

OK, let's see G

Where we last left off, you admitted to posting a number of opinions claiming, as far as I can tell, that the Crimean realignment is entirely due to Putin's ego. Is that the sum of it? And you blew past the takeover of a democratically elected government by Nazis as a cause for concern by Russophones, a popular referendum overwhelmingly voting to join Russia, and the Crimean area government voting to do the same as signs the people of Crimea voluntarily wanted to join Russia.

You also seem to support US interests in legitimizing the Ukrainian coup.

Is that about right?

Full leaked recording.
Tyler Durden's picture
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 03/05/2014 09:49 -0500

The last time a leaked phone call out of Ukraine was released about a month ago ostensibly by the Russian NSA equivalent, one between US assistant sec state Victoria Nuland and the US envoy to the Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, it was revealed that the real puppet masters behind the Maidan movement, and the true instigators of the Ukraine "revolution" were none other than the "developed" world superpowers, lead by the US. Also revealed were tensions between the US and EU strategies on how to overthrow the current government, culminating with the infamous "Fuck the EU." Needless to say the US, which implicitly confirmed the recording, was angry at Russia and accused it of using dirty tricks.

That's ironic, because when it comes to "dirty tricks" what is about to be presented, blows the top off anything Russia may or has done to date.

Earlier today an even more shocking recording has been "leaked" this time one between the always concerned about human rights EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Estonian foreign minister Urmas Paet, in which it is revealed on tape that all those photos of horrifying deaths of Ukrainians by snipers during the last days of the Median stand off, were in fact caused not by Snipers controlled by Yanukovich, but that the snipers shot at both protesters and police in Kiev were allegedly hired by Maidan leaders!

Estonian foreign minister Urmas Paet tells EU's Cathy Ashton about claim that provocateurs were behind Maidan killings.

In the call, Paet said he had been told snipers responsible for killing police and civilians in Kiev last month were protest movement provocateurs rather than supporters of then-president Viktor Yanukovych. Ashton responds: "I didn't know … Gosh."

The leak came a day after the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said the snipers may have been opposition provocateurs. The Kremlin-funded Russia Today first carried the leaked call online.
