Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

And I can't start new threads, or reply to most posts. It's quirky. If I understand this correctly, there is a database behind this site (all sites) which keep track of who, what, when, and where. The database might be chock-full of data. It may need to be... sometimes called "repaired", sometimes called "repacked"... probably called something else by now.

what did you post? I'd do a 'reply' to see but ... I can't reply to you. Post your link with spaces so it doesn't launch and I can read it. THANKS!

Looks like a lot (all?) of us are having problems posting in RWED.
Haken is aware of it, & there's a "This is a test thread" post
about it in General Discussion.

Yes, I emailed Haken yesterday, and I'm sure others did too. I just followed the instructions on the error message.

Is there a "donate to this board" button/ link?

Oops, problem continues.

HAKEN: BTW, traced the source to Brazil.
HAKEN: Looks like we were under a DOS attack, which was causing some of the issues the site was having. Someone is really pissed with us.

Hey thanks for the link.

A DOS from Brazil??

I know they're ticked off at the NSA spying on them, but what does this website have to do with THAT?

The video is pretty much a yawner. Sure, Ms Owl eventually gets them off the perch, but how do we know they didn't come back 5 minutes later, and steal all her eggs anyways ?

Meh.

Thanx Kiki, that was interesting information. Since I only come to RWED, I didn't know anything about the donation thing, so I chipped in.

I thought someone put this up a while back, but maybe I saw it on one of the husky FB pages I'm on. When I saw it, I said I'd put my money on the ravens; having had one for 14 years, I know just how persistent and sneaky they are, but I hope Mrs. Owl won out in the end!

I see Haken is doing a test thread, hope everything's okay.

Hi Niki

This is the most recent. The ravens have since built a nest of their own on a different and very close wing of the building. They're just hassling the owl out of spite at this point, I think. They're getting far bolder, and she's getting more active in chasing them away. The situation is at a standstill, as far as I can see, tipping in neither direction at present. How it eventually turns out, and if we'll be able to spot the turning point as it happens, is anybody's guess!

Thanx Kiki, now I understand--it's an update. Got it. I THOUGHT I'd seen it here before, 'cuz I shared it with a number of people. Then thought maybe it had been posted on one of the other places I'm on (urban mushing and husky sites), now I get it.

Is this somewhere near you or something that you're able to track what's happening? I assume her mate's been feeding her, or swapping off guarding the nest, and if the ravens have built another nest, yup, they're just harassing her on principle at this point, hee, hee, hee. If she's managed to hang on this long, the danger will be when her chicks are ready for fledging. If they're determined, I'd tilt things slightly in the ravens' favor at that point, until the owlets are big enough to fly only at night.

Let us know, if you find out what happens, I'd love to know.

My gawd, Auraptor has become a complete asshole, hasn't he...? I never knew about any donation thing; the minute I found out, I donated; but he's just gotta pipe up and call me names. Poor sick thing.

The owl's nest is one building over from where I work, and the ravens' is the building across a narrow courtyard from that and around the corner. They are CLOSE neighbors! I check the owl out often, it's just a pop out the door and a stroll down the sidewalk. But I'm not the person doing the videos. Whoever it is, I'm dependent on their efforts. So I'll try to keep you posted with videos as I'm able. Otherwise, it's going to have to be just text notes.

I find it more interesting than any soap opera.

I Googled around a bit...dunno what species she is, given her size I checked Great Horneds. Gestation is about a month (first video was posted a month ago), but the owlets don't fly well for 10-12 weeks, so they're in real danger. And yeah, the male feeds both female and young during that time, so she never leaves the nest. Hope they make it! ;o)

ETA: Ooops, we cross-posted. Thanx...the guy has posted a number of videos as time has gone on, will be interesting to see how it works out. Lucky you, to be so close!!

We had a pair of Stellar Jays build a nest under the eves RIGHT over our back door one year...made it difficult going in and out, but they fledged successfully and it was SUCH fun to watch as it progressed.

That checks with what other people have told me - one person I talked with saw the male bringing food once - he seems very stealthy!

Many years ago there was another great horned owl nest in almost that location. Three chicks hatched, and, as I was told usually happens in the wild, they fluttered/ fell to the ground. However, they often climb up trees with their strong talons and get some measure of safety. Unfortunately, their nest at the time was on a building and there was no tree climbing option. Two were predated, and one was taken to a rescue.

The presence of the crows definitely complicates things! (As does the appearance of a mountain lion with cub on the hill across the street.) OTOH, having learned from the previous nest, the human rescue factor is now up and running as well.

So far, it seems a toss-up as to what will happen.

...we've got to stop meeting like this...;o) I was editing my last while you posted...

So maybe she IS a great horned, I can't tell from the videos, except by her size. Yeah, usually the owlets move to a nearby branch, which there obviously isn't, with a building.

Are they crows or ravens? I thought ravens, from their size, but it's impossible to tell, and not much difference; both are rasty, smart and good predators. Certainly the human rescue factor can make all the difference, it's BIG around here, and the wildlife rehab is incredibly busy (especially this time of year!) as a result.

Will hold a good thought for them.

We DO seem to keep bumping in to each other!

BTW GREAT pix of the jays!

I was there at the very beginning - when mama was hooting for a mate. They are definitely great horned owls. And the black birds are ravens. And I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Kewl, thanx! I love Great Horneds--we've got some in the neighborhood, but we more often hear/see the little Screech Owls, which I adore too...their "bouncing-ball" call at night is something I've heard all my life and wondered what the hell it was. Only found out a couple of years ago and now I just love hearing it at night since I sleep outdoors.

But Great Horneds, they have MAJESTY! I wish her luck, hope you find out how it turns out. Now I'm off to a "husky meet-up" in Sausalito, which is always fun, so I'll leave you alone...for now... :o)

So, since I'm keeping score, this is how it stacks up:

kiki wins
reichtwhinge loses

After posting a simple item about the REAL WORLD, the rechtwhinge instantly trolled with off-topic snark. Since then, they've totally failed to address the topic, and continue to show that they're nothing but trolls.
