Keep the Shiny side up

Surprised no one has mentioned the Rightward/ Euro-skeptic move in the Eu parliamentary elections.

British PM David Cameron is threatening that the UK may pull out of the European Union if Jean-Claude Juncker, the Center-Right candidate for president of the European Commission, takes the chair.

Did the EU try to go too far too fast, or is it a return to nationalism, or something else?

I'd say aftershocks of the financial crisis.

People are pissed off at current national governments. EU elections (ANY elections) are how people tell them they lost all credibility. Look at how Greece voted a few years back (Golden Dawn are practically neo-nazis.) Austerity is unpopular, and especially in France you've had a lot of ethnic tension in how they deal with the growing Muslim population and Roma migrants. Front National's pitch about "French identity" seems attractive, even though they are not beyond suspicion to all French by far.

That and the EU has done a spectacularly bad PR job. It feels far away, there are democratic deficits (just WHY are TTIP negotiations so darn secretive?) and little transparency.

I wouldn't say the idea of the EU in general is discredited, but people are voicing their current frustration with how things have gone, both directly related to the EU and with their own governments.

If you hate your major parties at home, you're not going to vote for them in EU elections, either.

KPO

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Pro-Europe parties still have a healthy majority, so nothing will necessarily change in how the EU is run. This is a symbolic statement by the EU electorate about a growing dissatisfaction with the EU. (And also a protest vote against national governments).

That's the report of one German newspaper. I'll be amazed if it's true.

It's not personal. It's just war.
