An MP has died after she was shot and stabbed in an attack in her constituency, West Yorkshire Police have said.

Lone gunman acting alone, police say

Acting Chief Constable Dee Collins said the police believe it was a "lone gunman" acting on his own, writes Nicola Harley.

"The most important fact here at the moment is that we have one male under arrest."

She said a number of addresses were being searched in relation to the incident but would not confirm if other weapons have been covered.

Jo Cox died within an hour of the attack as doctors fought to save her life. She was pronounced dead at 1.48pm.

A 77-year-old man was also injured in the attack but his wounds are not said to be life threatening.

Ms Collins said they were appealing for witnesses to try and understand exactly what happened in this "terrible" case.

Looks like this murderous guy might be insane disturbed but some news claim he's a rightwing part of some nationalism group...not sure if its wise to connect this to say for example UKIP's Farage?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

There are enough nuts in any population to be attracted to any number of causes. Unfortunately, they range the spectrum from "basically sane but wholly ideologized" thru "emotionally unstable and vulnerable to breakdown" to "basically crazy: The Voices made them do it".

It's very difficult to tell, in any politically-connected violence, how much is ideology and how much is individual. One way to tell, I suppose, is how important the target is. Crazy people tend to target the unimportant. Committed terrorists like to strike as effectively as possible.

I used to think that one political "side" tended to drum up violence more than the other, until I saw anti-Trump activists beating Trump supporters bloody.

My sense is that this guy is a little more on the nut-bag end of things, but time will tell.

I'll tell you what I DON'T like about Trump: I think that he has never confronted either the international banking cartel, nor the CIA-State Dept multi-headed hydra, nor the military-industrial complex. The last person to confront them was JFK (BTW, ALL immigration was illegal under JFK) and look what happened to him.
