But I'm pretty sure Trump is not smart enough to take your "bargain". He will stall until Republican Senators (not Democrats) threaten him with death and destruction if he does not reopen the government.

And I see you never learned how to negotiate with somebody who doesn't need to make a deal with you or Trump. That would be the Democrats, who don't need a Wall and, I am pretty sure, won't vote for it until Trump gives them something of equal value. If he won't, then the Democrats won't help him and he won't get the Wall he thinks he can't live without and the shutdown never ends. But if Trump is faking that the Wall is a life-or-death need for himself, then the shutdown is all for show. The government will reopen when Trump gets temporarily bored with his histrionics about his Wall.

"I can't tell you when the government is going to be open. I can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they would like to call it," Trump promised in the Oval Office after a Christmas call with US troops. Maybe he really means it. Maybe not. Nobody knows except Trump, because his promises are only good for one day, but most Democratic Congressmen don't believe him and will patiently wait years until he gives them something of value in exchange for their vote on the Wall.

Trump said a shutdown is the president’s fault, and a fireable offense.

Guess which president he was talking about?

I will give you a hint: In a 2013 interview with Fox & Friends, Trump said the president should be fired if there’s to be a government shutdown, as the responsibility for such a failure “always has to be the top.”

Do you give up, JSF?

Trump didn’t get into the specifics of why the federal government actually shut down. He just said President Obama didn’t get “everyone in a room and lead.” Here’s the full interview:

Fox reporter: Who’s getting fired? Who’s going to bear the brunt of the responsibility if indeed there is a shutdown of our government?

Trump: Well if you say ‘who gets fired’, it always has to be the top. I mean, problems start from the top and have to get solved from the top. And the president’s the leader and he has to get everyone in a room and lead and he doesn’t do that. He doesn’t like doing that — that is not his strength. And that’s why you have this horrible situation going on in Washington too. It’s a very, very bad thing and it’s also embarrassing worldwide.

Trump has shown he’s unable to get “everyone in a room and lead.” The White House held a meeting with lawmakers on Saturday, but only Republicans attended. Maybe Trump should read The Art of the Deal?

Ignorant statement of the day.

You DO know there are many businesses that basically run off of the presence of government workers being at work, right? And that not all government workers are just rollin' in it??

More than 850,000 federal workers who were furloughed during the 2013 shutdown eventually got repaid. But the janitors, security guards, and cafeteria servers who work as subcontractors in federal buildings didn't.

More than 700 janitors and security guards and 500 food-service workers were unable to work in the Washington, DC, area during the shutdown, according to the Washington Post.

The head of a local janitorial company told the Post at the time that 100 employees who cleaned the Labor and Justice Departments couldn't work. It ended up costing his company $80,000.
https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/1/19/16907138/government-
shutdown-2018

Most services will continue, but national parks may be shut down, safety inspections (for example, for hazardous waste and drinking water) could be halted, and the IRS may not be able to process taxes and refunds,” said Marc Goldwein, senior vice president and senior policy director for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, in an email to MarketWatch. During the government shutdown in 2013, some $2.2 billion in Internal Revenue Service refunds to individual taxpayers were delayed.

Shutting down the Department of Homeland Security could prove problematic for troops deployed along the southern U.S. border. Nearly 6,000 active-duty troops and 2,100 Guardsmen deployed to the region could see border patrol activities cut or canceled in coming weeks, further confusing the role of support forces there.

The Coast Guard operated at 80 percent, but its services to maritime commerce and recreational boating would cease, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center.

VA officials work closely with HUD leaders on a host of homeless outreach efforts throughout the year, and a disruption in their funding could mean reducing or temporarily canceling some of those efforts.

So BungBetty has crocodile tears for hundreds of laborers sucking the Government teat taking some days off, but probably cackled with glee when 85,000 honest diligent workers at Arthur Anderson had their jobs permanently evaporated when the company was fraudulently prosecuted by Mueller's goons.

FWIW, to highlight recent history, there was a 17 day shutdown under Obama. The shutdown before that was 21 days under Clinton, and a separate 7 day shutdown also under Clinton. And the shutdown before that was a 5 day one under HW Bush.

H.R.695, but Trump acted like jackass braying that he won't sign it, so the Republican Senators went home for Xmas. Even the Republican Senators aren't interested in negotiating with Trump. Just to poke Trump in the eye, the Democrats suggested an amendment to H.R.695 that "Prohibits any funds in this act to be obligated, expended, or transferred for the planning, construction, or repair of border wall fencing." Trump crapped in his pants when he read it. He is not a cool-headed negotiator.

Did the country come to a crashing end in any of the 19 government shut-downs pre-Trump? Then why are your panties in a bunch?

And who was it who 'came to their senses' under HW Bush? Or under Reagan who had a whopping 7 shutdowns to his name?

No matter how long the shutdown continues, why will the Democrats not vote to pay for Trump's Wall unless he gives them something of equal value? Think why Mexico would not pay for the Wall.

The most important part of the entire promise Trump made in 2016 was that Mexico would pay for the wall. Make no mistake, that was the very heart of the pledge, making clear that it was not just a physical barrier but a symbol of our restored strength. This is something Trump has always been acutely aware of; in a phone call on January 27, 2017, just a week after he took office, Trump begged then-president Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico to stop saying that Mexico wouldn't pay for the wall. "If you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that," Trump said, explaining that "this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important." Peña Nieto refused to budge, saying that "this is an issue related to the dignity of Mexico and goes to the national pride of my country."

Peña Nieto was no fool. He knew that paying for the wall would be a national shaming for Mexico, which was precisely the point. Trump promised his supporters that Mexico's humiliation and subjugation would be the vehicle for the restoration of their own dignity and pride. Now Trump wants Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to be the next Peña Nieto.

This month Trump promised his supporters that Democrats' humiliation and subjugation would be the vehicle for the restoration of their own dignity and pride. Didn’t work with Mexico. Won’t work with Democrats.

And what does Trump say now? He can't possibly admit that it was a preposterous idea from the beginning and anyone who believed Mexico or Democrats would pay had to have been an idiot.

Because when it comes to National security and keeping us from becoming a third world shithole in the future, Democrats shouldn't be looking for anything more than ensuring that this doesn't happen.

Short of that, they should be thinking about getting votes.

Yep, when BJ Clinton caved in during Fall 1995, that was when Gingrich really, really didn't uphold his Contract With America - you could be so funny if everybody didn't suspect you really, really do believe some of the manure you spew. And when Obama finally caved, that was funny, too.

HR 695 of the 115th Congress.
Started as the Child Protection Improvement Act of 2017.
Converted to Department of Defense Appropriations Act, funding DoD until 30 Sept 2018, by the House on 30 Jan 2018.
Converted by Senate on 19 Dec 2018 to fund Government for 7 weeks, until 8 Feb 2019.
House added $5 Billion for Border Wall and passed on 20 Dec 2018.

None of the versions of this Bill was passed by both Chambers, so POTUS cannot sign it into Law.

That means Trump cannot "take it" - no matter how great of a bargain it is. Not until Senate passes it, which Schmucky Schumer said they will not.

If you (or Trump) really believe shutdowns are the way to "National security" then this shutdown should never end until it gives you (or Trump) what you want. Keep going, Trump, until you get the Big Beautiful Wall or the November 2020 election arrives! Don't surrender to GOP Senators who tell you a shutdown is bad politics! Don't settle for a puny $5 billion when you originally wanted $25 billion. And while you are at it, could you order a second season (24 episodes plus a Christmas Special) of Firefly?

Furloughing 380,000 employees? Making 420,000 employees work for free? Both groups are without income? After a few months, that will become a big deal to a few, but not all, Trump voters, especially those Trump voters without incomes because of Trump's shutdown.

America will be collecting "legitimate data to back that up" over the coming months, but I suspect Trump is joking about his resolve to remain shutdown. He will abruptly end it without getting his Wall and then, pretty damn soon, there won't be anyone who both remembers and voted for Trump. To those people it will be exactly like nothing happened and all the "legitimate data" in the world might just as well not exist as far as they are concerned. I see a similarity between Trump’s promise to keep the government closed until he gets $5 billion for Trump’s Wall and his promise to raise pay: he bragged to troops about a fictional giant pay raise he got them.

The president told military personnel in Iraq that they’ll get a raise of over 10 percent, their first in a decade. But it’s 2.6 percent, and they get a hike every year. He told the troops that other people wanted their raise to be smaller, but he fought for a double-digit boost.

tic tac

If there was nothing for Trump to sign until after the Senate returns tomorrow, why did Trump cancel his Florida vacation? Was it all for show by Trump? If so, that was stupid of him. He could have done nothing but run his mouth from the golf course as easily as from the White House.

There is no current Theater of Combat in Florida. In order to visit troops in their Theater of Combat, he needed to leave Florida.

Don't go off on another mindless tangent. Answer this very specific question.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Furloughing 380,000 employees? Making 420,000 employees work for free? Both groups are without income? After a few months, that will become a big deal to a few, but not all, Trump voters, especially those Trump voters without incomes because of Trump's shutdown.

I doubt very much that more than a handful of those workers are Trump voters. Do you have any legitimate data to back that up?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Still waiting for an answer.
Government parasites are not widely known as the greatest of Trump voters.

Let us see: losing 380,000 voters in DC, VA, MD, would have cost Trump how many Electoral Votes? Zero? Sounds right, ho hum. Sucks to be a succubent.

Oh, sure. The United States Secret Service never plans in advance, they always go willy-nilly to anywhere without a plan. Entering a COMBAT THEATER with Live Anti-Aircraft Missiles should make no difference.

You have proven yourself beyond stupid.

Background: whenever Reagan was scheduled to use MCAS El Toro to transfer Air Force One to Marine One, USSS was crawling our azzes for 3 weeks in advance. Yes, this was home soil, not a Combat Theater.

Does silence imply agreement?

I had heard clips of Nancy stumbling over the phrase "Christmas Shutdown" before it happened. Now I don't hear them, it sounds like crickets from the Left. Apparently only Trump wants to end the Shutdown.

Are Government Employees still on Holiday Vacation, anyhow?

Trump wants the Democrats to give him a $5 billion gift for his reelection campaign. Until they do, he has shutdown the parts of the government that he can. Since he could repeat this stunt as many times as he dares, simply by ordering employees to go home until he calls them back, the Democrats cannot give him what he wants or else he will keep doing it over and over. The only way to teach Trump to never do this again is to let him suffer the consequences.

The Democrats wouldn't have to discipline Trump if Congress was more like a board of directors. Congress could have fired the Chief Executive about 48 hours after he refused to do his job and replaced him with V.P. Mike Pence. Congress can do it quickly because there is no 48 month long minimum waiting period in the Constitution to fire a President. But like declaring war, which Congress has not done since 1942, it does not use all the powers listed in the Constitution.

Well, now the Government Shutdown has lasted for 13 days of Government. That is if you include Christmas Eve Day - and every Government Office I tried to contact that day was closed, so it might be really only 12 days.

All those Democrat voters who aren't getting paid are getting whiny.

The 2006 SFA with the 2007 Amendment already gave Trump the authorization to build the Wall, just not the money.
The Army Corps of Engineers already has $13.9 Billion of discretionary spending, so they could start building tomorrow. I heard talk of another $5 Billion in available funds which could be used, already sitting around.
Once Nancy gets her head out of her bung, these finds could easily be resupplied.

When my old man called me yesterday he got sidetracked right after I answered the phone. Something about the "government shutdown". I asked him what about it?

He said that his wife just mentioned that her sister had heard that EBT payments (food stamps) were going to stop being made because of the shutdown.

I called bullshit on that. 100%.

There were small and isolated riots breaking out in the past when EBT was down only for a day or two. I don't believe it would ever happen on a national scale for any amount of time, let alone an extended one. This is nothing more than left-wing-media fear mongering.

And on the almost 0% chance that I'm wrong about this, it will be ENTIRELY the Left's fault. Very little government actually ever shuts down during a government shutdown. VERY LITTLE. Food stamps play an extremely important role in our society in 2018. Cutting those benefits overnight for as a political move would be extremely reckless, causing much civil unrest and untold amounts of property damage and almost certainly putting people's lives in danger.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Mitch McConnell will not bring any bills to vote in the Senate for ending the shutdown unless the bill is pre-approved by Donald Trump. Trump has approved nothing, unless it includes his Wall. It is Trump and McConnell working together to make every solution, except the one that has a Wall, impossible. By the way, Mitch McConnell is on vacation today. The Democrats do have a solution. Trump has never wanted a solution. He has wanted a divisive issue and a personal monument. Futile though that monument may be, he could have gotten it, too, had he been willing to trade something attractive to Democrats. But Trump was never willing to bargain. Senate Republicans would not let him: They saw no point in the border wall and were unwilling to barter in exchange for it.

Trump discarded his leverage from the very start, by declaring for the cameras that the budget shutdown was his decision, his responsibility. From the article:

Quote:

The funding lapse has raised concerns about how long major federal nutrition programs, including SNAP and school meals programs, can continue to operate without a spending fix from Congress.

The Democrats need to come together and fix this part of it. Now.

Though they will be getting the benefits through at least February now, because somehow $4.8 Billion seems to have magically appeared out of thin air when this whole damn thing is over $5 Billion being appropriated somewhere else, I can't be the only one who thinks that giving these benefits a month early to millions of people who are among the least likely to be able to budget and plan is a terrible, terrible idea.

Democrats have the house, as some here love to point out every chance they get as if it were some big secret. They need to pass some EBT legislation now that is completely removed from any other issue.

The GOP controlled Senate as well as Trump himself would pass it. It would be political suicide to do otherwise.

That's not what I had in mind. They call it a "standalone" bill, but it's not a standalone bill.

If they really care about keeping riots from breaking out, they will pass a true standalone bill effecting only EBT benefits when this one likely gets shot down. People who want their tax returns can wait.

Trump won't sign ANY of the dozen bills the Democrats already passed about funding the government. Maybe if they broke the bills down into smaller pieces, a gross load of bills, 144, Trump would sign one, maybe? Give in to crazy man Trump? That would be crazy for the Democrats to do. Trump needs to come to his senses and start paying the air traffic controllers and the meat inspectors and he needs to stop whining for a wall, like a dog wanting a delicious doggy treat.

The Democrat already passed a bill that would allocate funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a top priority for lawmakers concerned that millions of Americans could lose access to food stamp benefits after temporary funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture runs out at the end of February. Trump does want to sign it because it does not include a Wall.

ansportation-dept-hud

I've got the solution: every bill from the House will include another 1,000 feet, no, make it 500 feet of wall. Trump only gets a wall if he signs. They could easily pass 4,000 bills and give Trump a little bit of his wall with each signature. That's how you train a dog to do tricks, give them doggy treats, but not too many at once or the dog gets fat and doesn't learn. The Democrats could train Trump with Wall treats.

Trump doesn't want to sign it because it includes a lot of other stuff not related to EBT and it doesn't include funding for the wall. It's not a standalone bill, and anybody "reporting" that it is, is a peddler in fake news.

If I were Trump, I would state loud and clear right now that he is 100% behind full funding of the existing EBT obligations and would sign a bill tomorrow that was EBT exclusive which would provide continued funding for EBT benefits for as long as the shutdown lasts.

Democrats would immediately cave because then it would be loud and clear that the burden is 100% upon them if there was even a mere hiccup on EBT payouts.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris online poll surveyed a total of 1,407 registered voters. 731 were asked whether they support building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and 742 were asked if they support constructing a security barrier.

For some reason they asked half of the voters a different question than the other half.

Lefty website "working with" uber-lefty University to come up with "facts".

Democrats can continue to throw a tantrum about it, or they can craft a bill specifically for EBT payouts and avoid a national disaster.

The bill has been crafted and Trump won't sign. Does he want a different version to open the Department of Agriculture? He has not said. 6ix has been more specific than Trump on the subject.

I've been more specific than ANYBODY ANYWHERE on the subject.

6ix, you have been more specific than Trump, and he, a million times more than you, needs to understand the issues in complete detail. But I don't think he has done the necessary work. Possibly other voters are noticing the same about Trump:

Data from the Fox News Voter Analysis of the midterms www.foxnews.com/midterms-2018/voter-analysis indicated that a majority of voters opposed the wall in states worth nearly 400 electoral votes (270 are needed to win) including in several states where the president’s approval rating was above water in the poll, like Ohio and Florida. Even so, the wall still isn’t popular in Michigan or Pennsylvania, important battleground states. And voters in Ohio, a politically similar state, opposed the wall.
