John McAfee found dead in Spanish prison after his extradition to the US was approved

New York (CNN Business)John McAfee, the controversial antivirus software magnate who'd had multiple recent run-ins with the US law, has died at 75. McAfee was awaiting extradition in a Spanish prison after being charged with tax evasion in the United States last year.
McAfee was found dead in his cell in a prison near Barcelona on Wednesday around 1 p.m. ET and a medical examiner went to the scene, a spokeswoman for the Superior Court of Catalonia told CNN. She said the cause of death is under investigation.

McAfee was deemed a person of interest in connection to the murder of his neighbor, Gregory Faull. He left for Guatemala soon after but was arrested by Guatemalan authorities for entering the country illegally and was deported to the United States.

In 2016, McAfee, a former Business Insider contributor, discussed his legal troubles abroad in a column titled "Here's what really happened in Belize."

In the piece, McAfee acknowledged his criminal history, admitting he had been "jailed multiple times," and had "brushes with law both here in American and abroad."

But his real crime in Belize, he claimed, was refusing to be extorted by the country's "corrupt" government.

McAfee alleged there was an ongoing government plot to assassinate him due to his successful business ventures in the country and his refusal to partake in bribery. He said he believed he was the intended target in Faull's murder, and that "the incompetence of the government caused the assassins to enter the wrong house."

McAfee was later found legally "liable" for Faull's death by a United States District Judge in Florida in 2015. The ruling (PDF) was made in a Florida district court as part of a five-year legal battle by Gregory Faull’s estate against McAfee.

A brush with the law caused by 'pure stupidity'

McAfee was arrested in Tennessee for driving under the influence and possessing a firearm while under the influence in 2015.

"In every case of my brushes with the law, with the exception [of] one — caused by pure stupidity; a DUI — I can attribute to my belief that every one of us possesses the fundamental right to civil disobedience," McAfee wrote in Business Insider in 2016.

McAfee claimed he 'hadn't filed taxes in 8 years'

On January 3, 2019, McAfee tweeted that he "hadn't filed taxes in 8 years." Less than one month later, he announced that he was living on a boat and running for president with the Libertarian Party while "in exile."

As a staunch Libertarian, McAfee vocally opposed taxation, arguing it was illegal and claiming he was a "prime target for the IRS" in a 2019 tweetstorm. He even goaded the agency to come after him, tweeting "Here I am."

In July 2019, McAfee, who was evading US tax authorities, was arrested on his yacht in the Dominican Republic related to allegations of entering the country with a supply of weapons and ammunition. He was held for four days before being released.

Three months later, on October 5, 2020, McAfee was arrested by Spanish authorities on tax-evasion charges at the behest of the United States.

McAfee is an odd one, I didn't read much of him as I thought he went off the deep end, too many drugs and posting stuff worse than Piratenews. I seen him tweet something about Epstein a while back ...then any time I seen him before this I guess its going back maybe 5 or 7 years when I read anything on him and he seemed to be out of his mind, booze drugs, hoodrats, italian gangster types, guns around him, then more cocaine, more peoples on islands with guns, he seemed to be tax running or hiding from Law I dont know the full story... he was either trying to act crazy or was totally out of his mind, his tweets and social media posts and videos were odd very bizzare, he mentioned he was no longer part of McAfee had no control over the company for a decade

Young people would not know McAfee. Teens would not know of him today but A lot A LOT of the older generation would know him, Boomers, Generation X and some Melenial maybe some Gen Z would know the name, he was one fo the first big Anti-Virus guys and his software was EVERYWHERE on the computers.

McAfee Dead by Suicide in Spanish Prison...will this lead to more conspiracy stories....indeed, John McAfee's widow does not believe he was suicidal prior to his death in a Spain prison.

I was REALLY hoping he had a few dead man's switches set up. Maybe he did and they found them all. Or maybe they went off, but the people's hands who the info ended up in were in on it too.

Anybody who's doing that sort of stuff with no fear of ever getting caught are quite possibly the most dangerous people in the world.

Considering how little anybody knows about what really went on, I have to say that it was amazing that Epstein was able to do any of the stuff he was doing. The fact that a list never came out after he died makes me think that he's the world's biggest dumbass.
