I tried to read the article, I really did, but it was so fulla crap I just couldn't make myself plow thru it.

"Americans on the whole have saved up money???" Seriously? When most Americans couldn't cover a $400 emergency and are $10,000 in credit card debt?

"The job market remains tight"?

OMFG, who writes this horseshit?

I agree, many Americans get themselves into trouble by overspending. Too much college loan debt. Unaffordable mortgages. Big shiny toys they call SUVs or electric cars. Bad investments. The latest smart phone/TV/clothing/accessory/vacation experiences they really can't afford. But there are also a lot of people working hard and just scraping by.

I know. In a way, that was me when I was 19-going-on-20 after I'd lucked into a 2-week office temp gig that was turned into an offer for the best job I'd ever had in my life by the beginning of the 2nd week.

I didn't go to any college that I didn't pay for up front, and I didn't get myself a brand new car... But I DID waste a bunch of money on useless college courses and every single car I've owned otherwise cost less combined than the car I drove around when I was 19-22 years old. I bought all the expensive beer while my friends could only afford the cheap stuff, and I was always buying rounds. I brought big old bags of weed to the party and smoked everyone and their friend out, while wearing my $250 outfits. I always walked around with the newest tech advertised in Maxim Magazine, and had only the best for the entertainment center in my apartment. (And the entire DVD collection gradually got stolen at the 5-nights a week parties half full of strangers I was always throwing and too drunk to moderate).

And then the job was nuked from orbit, I was lucky enough to have a grandma that let me move in, and I remained in the basement for 5 years with the two cats that pissed everywhere. No money saved up. ... At least I paid off the car.

And it's hard when you first realize how few friends you actually have. I got more incoming calls on a Friday night when I was 20 than I'd get in 3 months when I was 22 and broke.

The Vox article written by Emily and linked in the OP, like every Vox article ever written, was authored by people who have no idea what the real world is like because they've had everything handed to them their entire lives. You can't even blame them, really... They're little more than adult children at this point.
