Two fifty-year old documents related to the coup in Chile were released by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the State Department last week. The democratically elected, left wing government of President Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by the Chilean military, with covert CIA backing. A US-supported dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet was subsequently installed.

Technically, they can just keep secrets as long as they want to. When they're not seeking and getting approval to keep documents that should have been released after only 25 years to remain secrets for 50 and 75 years or more, they can just use the excuse that they don't have enough manpower to pour over the documents that should have been released a long time ago. There's a backlog, you see...

So...

Why was this one released after 50 years and not in 51? 53? 60? Kept a secret with approval until 75 years and then not released for another 25 years with another extension after that?

Why did they choose to release this now? It WAS a CHOICE. It wasn't just because of the years that have passed.

Allende's overthrow in a military coup was aided by the CIA. Diem's overthrow and assassination was tacitly approved by JFK, the CIA, and the American ambassador to Vietnam. The JFK administration knew about the plot bc military coup plotters spoke directly to CIA officers, asking for help. The then-JFK administration could have stopped the coup, but wanted to see it go ahead.

Diem's assassination would be the first example of being "America's friend" in S Vietnam. Thieu would have been the second.
