Well, in light of the fact that the box office numbers haven't been in the hundreds of millions, I thought I'd search for movies that didn't do so well in the box office, had crappy reviews, and still had sequels made despite the fact that the first ones were not so good anyway. So, here's my list of the most recent ones:
Jeepers Creepers ($30 million)
Baby Geniuses ($27 million)
Dracula 2000 ($30 million)
Punisher ($30 million)
Blair Witch 2 ($26 million)
Pokemon 3 ($17 million)
Leprechaun ($2 million, low even for 1993)
Alien 3-5 (made a good bit of money but were not good and now they're planning an Alien 6)
Jurassic Park 2 and 3 (like Alien, sucked but made money and now there'll be a fourth)
And let's not forget all the Ernest movies, the Police Academy movies, and the Look Who's Talking movies...all of which continued to be made despite slim profits.

There are lots more were that came from, but you get the idea. If Serenity keeps getting some cash and folks buy the DVD, and because the reviews are so good, I think there might be a chance that a sequel could happen. Makes me happy to think so anyway.

Remember, Joss wrote Alien Resurrection. I figure the studio raped his script, but certain elements from the film seem very much like Firefly (though admittedly much darker in character).

The ship "The Betty" is very similar to "Serenity", right down to it's angled thrust engines.

The Captain of "The Betty" (Michael Wincott) is very Mal like!

Ron Perlman play a merc character, similar to Jayne.

The ship's first officer, (Gary Dourdan) is a male version of Zoe. He also has a girl like name, Christie (Joss seems to love gender bending names, Jayne in Firefly, Fred in Angel).

The movie holds up until the third act, when the awfull alien hybrid shows up. The only other problem I had with the movie, was that the most interesting characters (the Captian and Christie) get killed off in the middle of the movie, leaving us with the lamer characters to carry on the story.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Not Joss's finest hour... What was he thinking...
I suppose everyone's allowed one bad film...

As for good till the third act, if you take it on its own. But I think it ruined the series from the first minute, more or less...

Maybe it was a bit harsh to expect 3 and 4 to live up to 1 and 2...

I also believe we still have some chance of sequels, but we shouldn’t confuse ourselves with misleading data. It’s important to examine the budgets of those movies, to put things in perspective: (All info from the “ever reliable” IMDb)

Jeepers Creepers: Budget--$10 million, Opening Weekend--$15 million
Baby Geniuses: Budget--$13 million, Opening Weekend $5.6 million
Dracula 2000: Budget--$28 million, Opening Weekend $8.6 million
Punisher: Budget--$33 million, Opening Weekend $13.8 million
Blair Witch 2: Budget--$15 million, Opening Weekend $13 million
Pokemon 3: Budget--$3 million, Opening Weekend $8.2 million
Leprechaun: Budget--$900,000, Opening Weekend $3 million
Alien 3: Budget--$50 million, Total US Box Office $55 million
Alien Resurrection: Budget--$70 million, Total US Box Office $47.7 million

So, the only examples that can really compare with the BDM are Dracula 2000 and The Punisher (Alien 3 also looks a bit similar; barely broke even in the US). We might want to look into what got them a sequel, see if we can reproduce it. DVDs will probably be key (I’ll post a new thread about this maybe next week, once the emphasis starts to come off the theaters, because we will need to sell *a lot* of DVDs to make this work--and I mean a lot).

And to preserve Joss’ reputation, they massacred his script for “Alien Resurrection.” That’s a whole long story right there; Joss says he cried when they showed him the final cut and he saw what they’d done to his script. He’s always wished he could take his name off that film. (Oh, and the third act--they forced him to rewrite that four times, each time making it worse--or in their eyes, “better”)

I don't want to say I've lost all hope, but if hope was flour, I wouldn't be making any cakes...

What kills me to no end is I've never met anyone who has watched Firefly and said they didn't like it. Some might have liked it more than others, but zero percent of the people I've ever spoke with said they didn't like it.

Oops, I meant Aliens 3 and 4 with 5 on the way...that's what I get for trying to count. I'm befuddled as to why people aren't going to see the movie more than they are - I mean "Anaconda: Hunt for the Blood Orchid" made almost $40 million for cryin' out loud. At least there was a movie, though - plenty of good TV shows killed before their time never get that (thanks to all of you guys). And as for Joss's involvement in the Alien movie, I choose the blame it's crappiness on editing and think Joss had nothing to do with it.
