Okay, seriously, look at these previews. FOX has the absolute worst possible advertising ever! No one wanted to watch it because of these trailers! Wrong music (Rock and Roll and Metal in 2517? I think not!) wrong scenes (I swear that it shows the Reavre Ship breaking Atmo on Whitefall in the "Jaynestown" trailer) the announcer isn't even trying to sound serious, they call Inara "A Cosmic Hooker" (She's a COMPANION) and in the ones where they talk about the characters, they don't even MENTION Zoe, Simon, Book, and Kaylee! How could Fox do this!?

I still remember the "girl in a box" one, which made no sense because they didn't show the pilot until after the show was canceled.

'Course that one doesn't show anything from the train job.

It's all stuff from the pilot that they didn't bother to air till LAST.

No wonder people couldn't figure out what was going on...

They don't work well with the show, bringing in the wrong sort of people to watch it, but they seem like normal ads for a tv series, not horrible, not that bad, just don't go with the show.

EDIT: In one of the Serenity (Pilot) ones, did it call Jayne "Jenny"?

Most of them seemed pretty wrong. The Jaynestown one seems okay, but ONLY if you'd seen the show before. Otherwise it wouldn't work I don't think.

I can't view the train job one here(too lazy to install codecs)

I remember seeing the "girl in a box" ads. And I remember seeing ads that ended with the shot of Serenity flying over horses. I specifically remember that one because that was the moment during the ad when they said it was a Joss Whedon show. Which of course, is the ONLY reason my husband and I watched the first episode. (We were hooked from then on of course...)

I'm just glad I didn't see any of the ads before the show aired. I'd have never tuned in.

Did Stitch really use the phrase "inbred dunghead" in Jaynestown? Because that's my favorite episode and I really don't remember that line.

To be fair, though, FF is REALLY hard to describe/advertise. It's too good. The premise is a little weired. Whenever I try describing it to a person, they always give me funny looks and never give the show a chance. Most times I just have to sit them in front of the tv with no briefing whatsoever and tell them, "if you love me, you will watch whatever images come on the screen"

And on that note, I wish the intros were on the DVD somewhere, it's really hard to describe the FF past to someone without Mal's help.

I found out by accident that in order to get my friends to become interested in Firefly, NEVER let them watch Serenity (pilot episode of Firefly Complete DVD Series) Always start with The Train Job.

Every person that I gave the DVDs too who watched the pilot episode 1st, never made it past the Battle of Serenity valley, but if they watch the Train Job 1st, they always LIKED it right off, and wanted more, so I guess FOX might have been right about airing the Train Job 1st before Serenity

I'm sorry, WHAT!?!?!? Anyone I showed Serenty (Part 1) to loved it immediately. I loved it immediately. My friend Karl, who could never manage to immerse himself into TV like I could ("It's just a TV show!" He says while I express my sadness about some horrible event in Buffy) nearly crapped his pants when Serenity was passing the Reaver ship! And how could anyone no get past the Battle of Serenity? Did they think it was too boring? Okay, here's what you do: Get a friend to watch Firefly with you for the first time, watch Serenity (Part 1) and if they look like they're getting bored and want to stop, whack them over the head and tell them to keep watching.

I cant view the .MPG's for some reason, I think its better that I dont (so I can stay naive and innocent)

Look at the description for the episode Shindig, they describe Badger as a warlord (I would describe him as a business man)

Anyone who mentions Shakespeare will get a .50 in their ass

Hehe... My sister was like that. She was NOT interested in the pilot untill AFTER the fight scene opening was over. Then she got into it completely. She wouldn't let me leave untill we played The Train Job and Bushwacked as well...

Then she called me two days later and begged me to let her borrow the DVD set. I'm gonna give he a set of her own...

Watching the DVD Extras, I liked the original opening and scene with the description of the battle as it made it much more explicit. Just watching the battle doesn't give me any where near the impression of devistation that Zoe describing it does. Just that they lost and Mal used to have some faith is all.

But the FOX execs saying it didn't have enough action is part of the reason Joss changed it.

Unfortunately, I did see the ads before the show aired and I didn't tune in. I even remember where I was when I first saw a commercial for it, and how I rolled my eyes and figured it was some campy low-budget fluff geared towards moronic pre-teens. Oh, how wrong I was. . .

So, yeah, if FOX can manage to market so poorly something that would become my favorite show of all time, one has to wonder where the fault lies. I like how David Cross puts it when he talks about Arrested Development's ratings in the second season blooper reel (which I'm surprised they allowed): "I got an idea for what you can do: why don't you (censored) fire your complete marketing team, alright? Get a new one in there that knows how to market a show that won five (censored) Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG awards, WGA awards, DGA awards, Producer's Guild awards, critics' Top 10 lists. . .you know, if you can't (censored) market that kind of show and get better ratings, then maybe the problem doesn't lie here. Maybe it lies with marketing."

Yeah... it makes me wonder how many people this happened with. It's really the biggest problem with promoting something like Firefly. The people who like Firefly tend to appreciate it because its something truly different. Marketing people, despite their phony, patronizing, deification of individuality, are convinced that no one wants to be exposed to anything unusual or challenging. If it can't be made to seem like something familiar, they haven't got a clue how to deal with it.

This leads to another observation that's always made me a little suspcious about ulterior motives behind canceling the show. The difficulty with marketing the show is, in part, because the very people likely to enjoy it, aren't likely to respond to flashy ad campaigns. So even if they can get them to watch the show, they're a pretty unappealing market for advertisers. Far easier to manipulate someone sitting mindlessly in front of some dumb reality show, swigging a beer and humming along to the advertising jingles.

These are nothing at all like the show. People who like the show won't necessarily be interested in all that.

Geez, those were bad. Cosmic hooker???

Kaylee: the proper term is companion.

Yeah, the commercials sucked.

But in all fairness, Before the show aired, the term "Companion" in a comercial wouldn't have really explained much. "Cosmic Hooker" may be crude, but it gets the idea across.

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."
