Over the weekend of October 1st thru 4th, my production team participated in the 3rd annual National Film Challenge. In this competition, each team is assigned a genre, character, prop, and line of dialog on Friday night. Teams then have till Monday to submit a finished film which includes all assigned elements.

My film, Minotaur's Garden, just made it into the finals of the competition. All 15 finalists (out of 139 entries) are now posted on-line.

Please check out my film if you get a chance. It even includes a couple of visual Firefly refrences for fans to spot (one is easy, if a little off-hue, the other is tougher - watch the background).

I'd appreciate any feedback. And if you really like it, you can vote for the viewer's choice award (which unfortunetly requires registration - but it's free).

We had a lot of fun making it, and I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. You can see it here:

very interesting Story... I couldn't find the references, though. I saw some things that were familiar, but nothing that jumped out at me. What are the references and when? Just so I know, when I watch the film agian later tonight to vote.

First thing I noticed right off the bat is the guy is wearing blue gloves.

I watched it again...and I'm not sure, but I thought I saw the serenity logo in the background among the labyrinth designs. Or perhaps I'm looking too hard and mine eyes are seeing things. Is that right though?

Oh, and I like the story concept. I love stories that make you think.

I can't believe how fast you have to put these films together. Great exercise.

Mad scientist guy was pretty cool. Acting was a little iffy from macho druggie. I was really looking forward to him getting hosed :)

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Yep, the blue gloves was one (though, like I said, wrong hue).

And the other is in the collection of mazes on the wall. Though it's not the serenity logo. (hint: whatever it is, it's turned sideways...I'll tell later if no one spots it)

Well, as we had literally zero time to rehearse, the actors pretty much had to go at it without a net - not helped by the fact that I have a tendancy to write clunky dialog. Mr. Scientist came off a bit better, but he's been acting regularly for 20 years, so he had an advantage over Mr. Druggie. I was pretty satified with both performances, especially given the circumstances.

And thanks to those who watched it. After putting so much effort into something, it's gratifying to know people enjoy it.

Hmm. Maybe there was a problem when you tried. You might check again. I registered this morning (yes, I voted for myself - shady maybe, but what can I say?)

Nope can't see it.... Do you mean when the camera goes for a close up of the mazes on the wall before the druggie says the line "so you like mazes." Is that the place, because I see something, but I can't make it out. No idea what it could be though.

Okay, I guess I won't drag it out...

In the first scene, in the close-up shots of Lefty (the mad scientist), there is a Blue Sun sign, turned sideways, on the wall behind him.

I saw that right away. Even when it was far off in the background. Then of course, I completely missed the blue gloves...

Awesome movie. Where did you film the outdoor scenes? Some of it looked familiar.

We filmed it here in my home town of Farmington, NM (well, the rock maze was in Aztec, the next town over, where I teach).

The lab set in the first scene is the garage our production was based out of (we are very much the production company equivalent of a garage-band). The garden was our costumer's mother's back yard. The park with the granite sphere is a local war memorial. The rock maze is a sacred place for our local Wiccans (used with permission and treated with respect by the crew).

The fun part was, aside from the garage (which was shot very last), I had never even seen any of the locations before we started shooting.

"I think I saw that in a video game..."

Please tell me that's a reference to the old video game Minotaur by Bungie (now famous as the creators of Halo)!

Now I see the sign. There were so many labyrinths and I was looking at those to see if the logo was in it...the circular designs had me going.

Good job!!

Sorry. Can't say I've heard of the game. It just seemed like a good way to make him seem sufficiently un-educated (for never having heard of the Maze and the Minotaur myths).

Since the voting closes in a few days, I thought I'd give this a wee bit of a self-serving bump.

So, uh.... "bump".
