I mean, besides playing horseshoes and that game and the ball game in the cargo bay...how does he spend his free time? Anyone with any ideas? I mean, a lot of time off on those long ship voyages...

Mostly I figure he logs onto the cortex, surfs around a bit, then grabs ahold of his plow.... Wait a minute that's how I spend my spare time.

No idea really but I suspect that he does what most of the people do who have time to kill. Read a book, watch some tube.... Wish he had the guts to ask Inara out on a date, wonder just what Zoe does see in Wash, wonder what Kaylee sees in Simon, wonder what the deal with Book is.... The list goes on.

He does spare-time Captain-y things, like reading ancient mariner poetry and looking at old maps...and yeah, keeping his guns in good shape.

First thing in the morning, he checks to see how
his wound(s) is(are) healing. Then I think he
does some pushups and situps in the morning and
then wanders in to the kitchen to see who all is
up and making coffee, wondering if it's worth
spending the money to get a new coffeemaker.
I can imagine him sitting with his feet propped up
without his boots on yet, reading whatever passes
for a morning paper, then getting up and walking
around the ship seeing where everyone is and what
they're doing.

Probably he'd spell Wash for a bit if Wash was up
all night (honestly I'm not sure how reliable that
autopilot thingy is or how long they let the ship
fly itself).

I imagine Zoe would show up on the bridge and
they'd talk business for a while. He'd
probably make some phone calls (waves?) and do
some business-related research, then get up and
wander around seeing what everbody's doing again.

Mid-morning might be laundry time? There's
probably usually something on the ship that needs
his attention while laundry is happening, like,
um, little ship things. Also a good time to mend
bullet holes in clothing.

Around lunchtime - I'm having trouble imagining
time passing because there's no sunlight drifting
across the walls and floor. Around lunchtime he'd
well, have lunch. I think lunch wouldn't be as
big a gathering as dinner because people would be
more like wandering in and out instead of all
sitting down together. And hey, guess what's for
lunch. Grilled cheese-type-protein slabs anyone?

I imagine that after lunch would be a good time
for him to Make Plans and Arrive At Decisions,
such as they are. Also a good time to polish guns
and rearrange cargo. I think he rearranges cargo
the way some people rearrange furniture. It's
good excercise too.

As the afternoon wears on and there's still no
sunlight moving around, I think he'd start
wondering how close to dinnertime it is, and what
Inara's going to wear tonight. All the Captain-y
type worries that happen throughout the day might
be starting to all jumble up and get crowded.
Dinner is break time from that.

We already know what dinner time is like.

After dinner I think he'd sit at the controls
again for a while before turning them over to Wash
for the night. (I guess the timing of the whole
doing-shifts-with-Wash thing would be mainly
according to ETA at wherever they're going rather
than ship day/night. And I still don't know if
the autopilot can be left alone for 12 hours.)

Now it's nighttime. Looks a lot like daytime.
I left out a whole bunch of stuff about what all
everyone else did during the day because I wasn't
paying attention. But around the time Wash
shuffles back on to the bridge, Captain is ready
to call it a day - a nice, easy day. He's kind
of happy.

Except you know, he can't get to sleep.
I'd stop right here, except now I'm seeing him
don a suit and go for a walk around the block.
It's ok as long as someone else is awake - that
would be Wash just now - like a buddy system so
that no one ever takes a walk without someone on
the bridge knowing about it. So he's taking a
walk now, checking out all the antennas & stuff
even though he's not real sure what some of them
do. Just making sure they look like they're in
the right place and all. Trying to get sleepy.

Whoops I'm losing signal. Hey, GOOD Topic!!

You forgot fighting with Inara. I figure it would occur either during the afternoon or more likely after dinner.

I would imagine it takes him a spell to get those tight pants on in the mornin'.

By the time he puts on his pants, eats, fights with Inara and cleans his guns, pilots the ship upon occasion, gets 'em jobs and coordinates that and keeps Jayne in line AND reads a few poems and checks out the ship, I'd imagine that's all the captainy things he's got time for. Down time? I don't think Mal lets himself have too much of that. When he does, I'll bet he sleeps.

It's from Serenity BDM. Right after that, he's waked up by Inara's wave.

I vote he sleeps during downtime, since this scene is probably in the middle of the day (as everyone else is up to eavesdrop). Can you really see Wash waking up Jayne to say: "Check it out, Captain's got a wave!"? Kaylee maybe, but Jayne? Besides, we already know Jayne's a heavy sleeper.

You know Mal spends his down time meddling in other people's business on the ship. He'll wander to the engine room to "help" Kaylee or to fiddle around with Wash. Serenity is his baby, he just can't not mess with her.

Cap'n clearly spends his spare time AIL (after Inara leaves) in Shuttle number 1 going through her "trunk of mostly sundries." And that is probably where he found a copy of the Ancient Mariner to read.

After cleaning his guns and taking his turn with the ship's chores, he probably grabs a nap. But I have a feeling he sleeps with one eye open,so to speak.

Oh, and thanks to the poster of that lovely picture of Mal hibernating. With one eye open of course.
