May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
Quote:12.10.03 By Devin Faraci Contributing sources: TV Guide Yesterday was a big day for fans of Joss Whedon - Buffy season 5 hit DVD, as did the entire series Firefly (with three episodes that never aired). Firefly has long been talked about as a possible feature film - in fact earlier this year Whedon more or less said he would be directing such a movie. Not so fast. It seems like Joss has, once again, spoken too soon. For fans this is kind of a common occurrence. Remember the Buffy animated show? Or the Giles' spin-off, Ripper, for the BBC? "I have interest, I have hope, but I have no news," Whedon tells TV Guide. "I can't really talk about it. When there is news, I will [tell you]. But if I start talking about it before there is [anything definitive to say], it lessens the chance that [it will get made]." Learn this lesson wisely, Joss. As a fan, I love to be on the in when something exciting is happening in your world, but as a fan I also hate all these false starts that are really just a part of doing business in Hollywood. Still, if a Firefly movie does happen (and a good set of sales figures on the DVDs could go a long way to making that happen - witness the renewed network interest in The Family Guy after that DVD sold so well), Joss is committed to making sure that the movie is accessible to fans and newcomers to the sci-fi world of the crew of the Serenity. "Assuming it actually happens - which I cannot - yeah, the idea is I'm trying to write a movie that everybody who hasn't seen the show could enjoy, but that doesn't repeat anything that we have seen on the show."

There are so many steps in putting a movie on the screen that any one of them could upset the whole project. An extreme example, is the movie in post-production and producers halting the whole thing when the distributor gets cold feet. So, until they start making prints, I remain hopeful because Joss wields a sizeable reputation. Okay, he's not a film god like Ridley Scott. But set in stone, no. That's always been the case, IMO. Industry insider Mitch on the main FF board has often made this point. And so that subject line is a little over the top.
