Don't know if anybody saw this...

`Firefly' soars again on DVD

Hands down, Fox's "Firefly" was the most brilliant network show to fall on its face this millennium. It was one part Western, one part future shock. Though set in the 26th century, its story lines came right out of the old stagecoach thrillers that the series creator, Joss Whedon, was plainly enamored of as a kid.

The beautifully made "Firefly" was as complex as any sci-fi monstrosity and then some. (Everyone, it seemed, was fluent in English and Mandarin.) Yet it wore its aura lightly -- no prostheses -- and was surprisingly high on the belly-laughs. (I had just assumed from TV that humor is eradicated in the future.)

It was pitiful that Fox scheduled "Firefly" in the black hole of Friday nights. It was more pitiful that it stopped production after 14 episodes -- and aired only 11 of those. Or maybe Fox knew what it was doing. After all, the network's video arm, Twentieth TV, had already struck gold with its DVD collections by the end of 2002, when the hatchet fell on "Firefly."

And so, in stores Tuesday, comes "Firefly: The Complete Series," one of the year's must-have (or at least must-rent) collections. It's one of the most lovingly assembled DVD sets I've ever seen, crammed with wistful commentaries by the cast and Whedon, and a terrific featurette on the life and death of the show. It seems no one connected with the series wanted to let it go, and that's evident from this collection.

Also in stores this week: season five collections of both "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," also a Whedon creation, and "M*A*S*H."

Thanks, that's a very shiny review, written from the heart.

I love how he talks about Firefly in detail and then mentions Buffy as an afterthought. It's more frequently the other way around.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Excellent & well thought out review. Thanks for posting it.

I am so glad to see critics giving the DVD set such great reviews. I hope it really helps to sell the sets right off of the shelves.

I know I have talked to several people that I have seen in stores checking out the sets for potential Xmas gifts, and I have told them about the series, the set itself, and about the potential for a movie. I can only hope all of our efforts pay off.

"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."
