The comic - He's creating an X-book called Astonishing X-men that'll be out may..

Got story? Here...

Hit televisions shows just weren’t enough for Joss Whedon, he had to have the X-Men too. After creating both “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” and the hit spin-off “Angel,” Whedon’s now signed on to write a new X-Men title debuting in May. Alongside superstar artist John Cassaday (Planetary), Whedon will launch Astonishing X-Men, the newest title to join the ever-expanding X-line of books.

“For the last couple of years, I’ve really been reading New X-Men pretty avidly,” Whedon told Wizard. “I was really into the book and I don't have three shows on the air anymore, just one. I love the world so much. I love the book. I felt like, ‘Well, my schedule is opening up a little bit and these guys are all so cool, it'd be so much fun.’ Then, John Cassaday expressed interest—that made it exciting and everything kind of fell into place.”

While Whedon’s team members are still top secret and he’s wary of releasing too many details about his upcoming 12-issue run, Cassaday did mention that it was a hard deal to turn down after the artist heard about the cast of characters he’d be allowed to draw

You're a dick.

A big ole' cup o' mudders milk if you know what that quote is all about.

Funny, Joss seems so desperate to get his artistic energy out. Comics are a terrific medium for creators like Joss and I'd be excited to read his X-Men. I hate superhero fascists but X-Men have been more about underdogs and family than whatever it is that nut Batdude is up too.

But...

Joss; can ya not try joining us here in the real world? Grow a set. Make your own comic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He did, it was called Fray. It took forever to come out (did it ever finish? Or is he trying to emulate Kevin Smith?)

Can't wait to see what Joss will do on X-Men - I got back into comics when JMS did Rising Stars and Midnight Nation, and what he is doing with Amazing Spiderman is fantastic - which has lead me back to comics after so long off, to discover there is some great work there. When Kevin Smith can get a book out, its usually pretty good.

Try Runaways, which is in a similar vein to Buffy in some ways.

A couple of things:

First: We all like to play in the worlds Joss creates, why shouldn't he play in a world someone else created for a while?

And Second: Excuse me, I don't think that SpookyJesus said anything worthy of your rather nasty commentary. Also don't think Joss deserves your venom, either. If you must spew, please do it somewhere (and on someone) else.

If the "You're a dick" is the insult you're referring to, Ghoulman wasn't insulting SpookyJesus. He was just quoting a Wolverine comment from the first film.

I suspect there was a continuity jump in there somewhere. (As in: Mention of X-Men - thought of funny quote from X-Men pops into head - post including funny quote, even though no one else was thinking of it.)

On the other hand, if that wasn't the intention, then yeah -- it was uncalled for.

(Just tryin' to keep the peace.)

Also -- foo on there not being a "preview" button, or I would have edited that quotation bit down a little.

Ah well. :-)

On the second point, I think it was a quote from the X-Men movie - Wolvie to Cyclops (can't find a geek emoticon)

On the first, well said! Given the body of JW's work, X-Men would seem to complement his sensibilities perfectly - and the dialogue should zing.

Y'know, you just might have a point there; I do recall that quote. If I've jumped Ghoulman unnecessarily, I heartily and wholeheartedly apologize. I stand by the Joss defense, though...

Thanks, Czelt and MBV

OHHHHH! I get it! Okay, I do owe Ghoulman an apology. I just re-read his post (for the umpteenth time), and understood the part about:
Quote:

You're a dick.
A big ole' cup o' mudders milk if you know what that quote is all about.

I didn't connect the two statements in my head. Derrrr... Guess there's no mudder's milk in my future, eh?

Ghoulman, sorry 'bout my misunderstanding, dude.

"You're a dick."
is one of two survivng jokes from joss's rewrite of X-men. they'd asked him to punch up the script a little. he did. they threw out everything but two jokes, and one of them was butchered.

What was the other joke in the movie, the one that was butchered? I knew that he did script work, but I didn't know what from the movie was still his.

I'm personally excited to read his take on the X-Men. I got out of the books in the past year or so, not long after the latest re-launch. It'll be fun to jump back in with Joss and see what he does with them.

FRAY was finally finished; I think the problem was that the artist (Moline?) had over-extended himself just a tad by starting work on ROUTE 666 for CrossGen. I can't remember if there were script delays too, but I thought a lot of it was artist-related. I remember being ticked when ROUTE 666 came out. "DUDE!! Finish FRAY first!!!"

The same thing that happens to everything else."

here's some more detail about it in an interveiw with joss:

He's got that Buffy comic series ("Tales of the Vampire Slayer" I /think/) and recently a vampire-perspective one (with some touching background on Drusilla and Spike just before they came to Sunnydale). He just wrote the introductory piece, though, and mostly gets other writers I think. Still.

No worries ASTRIANA. That 'dick' comment is the only real surviving line Joss wrote for that movie. No drinks for you.

And then I added 'why doesn't joss do his own comic?" which is neither here nor there. Just my personal desire to see Joss to something in the 'real' world. I read X-Men in high school and loved it and I liked the first movie very much.

I heard of Fray. Forgot about it actually so I stand corrected! I noticed Marvel comics is putting out a lot of money for writers outside of comics. Kevin being the most well known example, and now Joss. Makes sense... Hollywoodland has been stealing from comics for years so comics might as well get something back.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have to admit that I have not read a comic book in awhile, years in fact. The writing just got so bland and repetitive that I quit collecting and reading.

If Joss is going to start writing for X-Men, then I will check it out.

Thanks to Astriana for the defence - I didn't get the quote reference the first time I read it as I thought Ghoulman was having a go at my Got Milk? reference (Yes I know it's sad to reference Got Milk?). - That is an obscure reference though.

Also Fray is available as a trade paper back and I'd encourage all of you to buy it - not only because it's awesome but to encourage Dark Horse to continue to publish Joss' work, such as the chance of a Firefly series via Dark horse's Rocket comics (sci-fi) imprint.

There's good and bad here.

Good: Hopefully his name associated with the comic will bring some of that big fanbase to the Firefly movie.

It should be a fun and gorgeous comic (Cassady is a great comic artist)!

Bad: Cassady is a very very very slow artist, so expect delays. Hopefully, any slowness won't antagonize fans and drive them away from Joss and Firefly.

But hopefully, as X-Men is a flagship title, they will insist on the comic being far enough ahead not to mess the schedule up - they don't want to lose any momentum built up with the movies (that said, there are about a zillion X titles - but as I understand it this is something of a re-boot across the board).

It would be nice if some fan crossover from the X-Men title came over to Firefly, but I don't know if the numbers would be significant or not. Of course any number of fans is better than nothing.
