Hi guys,

this may be somewhat ot, but i had to post it.

for all the browncoats here who love the firefly score, you must check out a guy named david goodrich. his last album, 'accidentals of the west', is a mellow, acoustic album.

you can find his website at http://www.davidgoodrich.com. please go the 'music' section and download 'aberdeen' and 'new/old joe'. they remind very strongly of firefly. you can also download 'accidentals of the west' which is quite possible one of my favourite songs, ever.

please check this guy out, an let me know what you think...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I checked out the site and it looks good. I will download some of the songs when I get home to check them out.

It was enjoyable music. I had a little picture of Mal and company walking through the dusty streets of some remote planet on the rim while the songs were playing.

Shssay,

Great! I'm glad you liked it! There are definitely more Firefly-esque music on the album, (wink-wink, nudge-nudge, twinkle-twinkle, kissy-kissy, tonguey-tonguey, blushy-blushy,legal casey-legal casey)!

This is beautiful music, I even got so far as the checkout before finding out that my debit card (I'm in England) isn't accepted payment. But this is simply gorgeous music, is there anywhere else that sells the album? If not, it might be worth getting a credit card just to buy it...

Wow. This kind of traumatized me, when I realized who this guy was. I saw him...1 or 2 summers ago. It was a terrible show. And yet I'm lovin' the downloads. I don't get it.

Fireflythemovie,

Was it at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA? Because other than that and three shows at a place called Toad (in Porter Square, MA), Goody has never played a solo show.

I was actually at the Passim show, (co bill with Jeffrey Foucault, also great) and I loved it. The big difference between the shows and the album is that on the album Goody plays EVERYTHING, there's is nothing on that album that he doesn't play, where as at the show, he had another guitarist and a bassist with him.

I'm glad you love the downloads.

Nope, it was in Madison. He was playing with Peter Mulvey (who I've seen play twice solo, and he rocks). The sound was terrible, and I'm starting to think that their musical styles just don't go together at all. Also, I've listened to all the downloads now, and I really, really don't love all of them. The more new-agey faux-Eastern sounding songs just don't do it for me. He tried to mix that sound with Peter Mulvey's folk music and it really didn't work.

Fireflythemovie,

Cool, my sister is Peter's publicist, and he and I are actually good friends. I have to disagree with you though, that their sounds don't mesh well together. Goody has prduced and played on the bulk of Peter's CDs, and he also co-wrote most of Peter's songs. Whenever I see them play together, it's amazing to see how well they play together.

If you have Peter's last three records, you can hear Goody all over them, he produced 'Kitchen Radio' (and wrote all of 'Bloomington') and 'Trouble With Poets'. For example, on Kitchen Radio, on 'Sad, Sad...' there's this amazing solo about 2/3 of the way through the song that I love to death. I also love Goody's work on 'Running Up The Stairs' on 'Ten Thousand Mornings'. In fact, just about all of the solos on Peter's songs are Goody.

It's entirely possible that Goody was having an off-night, but everytime I've seen them play they're amazing together, plus Goody is one of the greatest guys you'll ever meet. :) I'm also curious as to what other artists you like? Also, what songs specifically did you not like from the site?

Let me clarify: what he was playing that night did not mesh. Possibly because he entirely overpowered Peter, because the sound was so terrible. You could hardly hear anything that Peter was singing or playing. So we basically got to listen to background music all night. The people I was there with refused to buy any of Peter's newer CD's because Goody was on them, and they'd both seen Peter play solo before, and we all put at least a large chunk of the blame on Goody. I bought Trouble with Poets anyway, and was shocked that I actually liked the whole thing despite Goody playing on it. Of course, I don't know what Goody played and what Peter played, and who wrote what, so maybe I like it because he's on it. (And I convinced my friends to by Trouble with Poets later, too.)

Anyway, from what I've heard of Goody's music, his songs tend to fall into two fairly broad categories: ones with roots in folk, celtic, jazz, blues, and probably some other stuff (that reminds you of the FF theme, I only see a vague resemblance, but I really like it); and ones that have roots in more Eastern new-agey stuff. I don't think he does the latter category very well (and I'm not a huge fan of the genre of music, anyway), and it's what he was pulling from heavily the night I saw him. On Trouble with Poets, he seems to pull more from the former category. *shrug*

So, the songs I liked that were available for download: Aberdeen, Accidentals in the West, New/Old Joe. I deleted the others, so I don't remember their names.

Cool, I'm really glad you convinced your friends to buy TWP.

I think we actually have the same thoughts on Goody. From what I understand, I think you downloaded songs from his first record, 'Failure of the Doping Summit', which is a record I don't have, because what I've heard of it, I havne't really enjoyed.
However, I LOVE his second album, 'Accidentals of the West', which all of the songs you liked, are on.

Enjoy the music, oh and here's alittle tidbit: 'Aberdeen' was actually an improvised song, that Goody did just by taking a scale, pressing record, and playing.

Enjoy!

Just checked out David Goodrich's site and got the mp3s. (I remember seeing this post awhile back and never getting around to checking the site out. I was just sitting here doing nothing when that hit me out of nowhere ;) I really liked Flew, and now I'm listening to Accidentals. Overall, I'm pretty impressed. Good find. (=
