REGINAROADIE

I know. The only thing so far that the remake has going for it is that it's being directed by the same guy that directed THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, which was a pretty good flick.

But like I said, proceed with extreme prejudice.

Another one for The Mote in God's Eye.

Eon (If you haven't seen it, there is this trailer for the non-existent film:-)

Something in Iain M. Banks' Culture universe would be cool.

Serenity II, III, IV, et al, of course.

The War of the Worlds done properly.

And it's been mentioned before, The Stainless Steel Rat.

Abhor...really? Why no more Galaxy Quest? I love that movie...for me it is the quintessential sci-fi fan movie as it deals with all the elements of sci-fi & fandom. It deals with it in a humorous, but highly respectful way. I think that movie is so ripe for new stories....heck they've got a new re-vitalized TV series, they got Guy Fleegman (Sam Rockwell) as new Security Chief "Roc" Ingersall, tech sgt. Chen with Lalilari, etc etc. It screams for another movie....Maybe this time the Thermians come back to Earth to warn the Commander that other hostile aliens are on their way to attack Earth, and our brave cast has to go the the UN or something to convince them of the impending attack and to get ready for it....or a million more stories that could be told with this fantastic crew.

I thought Heinlein was quite adamant about no women in the military. Hollywood can't handle that type of reality.

There are rumors about this one, actually. IMDB has an entry, but it's pretty disappointing.

I personally don't see the problem with turning video games into movies, except that it has always turned out poorly in the past. That doesn't mean it will continue to be that way. I mean, failed tv shows don't make good movies, either, do they?

Actually, in Troopers, women are totally equal, and are better pilots, so they get tapped for that. I can't remember as far as the grunts, I think they are all men, been a while since I read it.

To quibble, and I see GorramGroupie has also, he explicitly said no women in combat infantry units. He did make it clear that women make better pilots, and consequently, has them piloting everything in ST, including landing craft, and in fact, commanding the combat transport ships...

And he also points out that Rico's friend from school, who is female, looks good in short hair. Morena anyone?

ALIENZOOKEEPER

Another vote for Mote in God's Eye, the best damn first contact novel ever written!

Lucifer's Hammer, coz I love disaster epics! And Footfall, coz I love invading space elephants from Far Centauri!

Shards of Honor/Barrayar as a 6-hour, made for TV mini-series.

A Fantasy, but Elizabeth Moon's Sheepfarmer's Daughter, the story of the female Paladin Paksarenion (did I spell that right?).

The Lt. Leary Commanding series, starting with With The Lightnings. Alan Tudyk as Leary and either Morena or Gina as my favorite information witch.

Callahan's Place

The Uplift War

Live Action Cowboy Bebop! (Adam as Jet Black?)

I would also love to see any of the Watch books from Discworld get made. But who would play, shudder, Nobby Nobs?

Vince the Alien Zookeeper

Hmm... imagine Consider Phlebas with Nathan Fillion in the lead and Joss Whedon doing the adaptation... Almost as good as Serenity II...

Meanwhile - whatever happened to the film of Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon that was in production hell?

SUZFROMOZ

I havent read this whole thread, but I'm disapointed in the lack of sci fi novels being suggested. There is an amazing array of quality stories just waiting to be made into films, stories that I wished for as a child but didnt realise that technology would ever be able to really do the special effects justice.

Hmm, will have to think about a list, cant do it justice off the top of my head.

But Im all for his first choice of course!

DARKFLY

I want the Mortal Engines Quadrilogy made into a film, its a reasonably adult sci-fi book despite techinally being a teen novel.

Story
The book is set in a postapocalyptic steampunk world, ravaged in ages past by a nuclear holocaust known as the "Sixty Minute War," which caused massive geological upheaval. To escape the earthquakes, volcanoes and other instabilities, English inventor Nikolas Quirke designed a system known as Municipal Darwinism, where entire cities essentially become immense vehicles known as Traction Cities, and must consume one another in order to maintain themselves in a world deprived of most natural resources. Although the planet has since become stable again, Traction Cities are still used despite the fact that they were intended to escape from natural disasters, and the new world order continues.

Much technological and scientific knowledge was lost, and what remains of "Old Tech", artifacts remaining from our more developed society, are dug up and pored over by scavengers and archeologists. Europe, some of Asia, North Africa, South America, Antarctica and the Arctic are inhabited by Traction Cities, and North America is a radioactive wasteland, while much of the rest of the world is the stronghold of the Anti-Traction League, an organisation that seeks to stop cities from moving and thus stop the intense consumption of the planet's resources. In the world of Traction Cities, nations no longer exist - each city is an individual state.
