I read on this site a disccusion for the episode titled "Objects in Space," and I wanted to add an observation and/or a question, but cannot find the origina topic. In the other topic it was asked wht Jubal Early liked the railing of the ship, which got me to wondering that question myself, so I went to wikipedia.com and and read what they wrote about that episode. In the write up is said that River and Jubal shared an ability to see things without assigning the usual characteristics to them, and as an example they showed River picking up a stick in the bay of Serenity which turned out to be a pistol, and Early pulled out his gun and described it to Simmon. I wonder what Early was seeing when he licked the railing, or if this wasn't an example of this ability, was it a sign that Early was a few cards short a full deck?

Also in the fight between Mal and Early Early wiped out the Captain rather quickly unarmed, and in Serenity the both times Mal faced off against the Operative he lasted a long time, so does this mean the Bounty Hunter Early could beat the Operative in a fight?

Also I have ben thinking that Shepherd Book was a former Operative who like the Operative in Serenity lost favor with the Alliance, but then was wondering why a Bounty Hunter would know that. At wikipedia they said it was probably his ability to see things with out their assigned values. What do you think?

Good ideas.

I personally disagree with Operative Book though, mainly because the Operative was only thought up when Joss decided to cram a season of storylines into a movie.

There is a recent story and Nathan and Morena revealed Books secret as a dirty cop, but well can you trust what they say? they seem to be having a lot of fun with misdirection and all atm.

What gets me thinking Book was an Operative or something similar was in "Safe," when he was able to get medical attention from the Alliance Cruiser just from a quick scan of his ident chip, the way both Book and the Operative kept emphasising belief in "Serenity," and Book's detailed knowledge of stuff a Shepherd would never have a reason to know.

For all we know he could have been a former Companion. That would get him some credibility. Maybe he had Military clients who let him know more than they should have...

Belief is not something that is particular to an operative. The Companions guild also uses it to its advantage. A Priestess would run a Guild House House...

I find the history that he was a former Companion much more credible than him being a former operative. Mainly because a Companion is something from the firefly 'verse that was thought of before the desperation to stick a long storyline into a short time frame created the Operative.

Is him being a Companion the most credible scenario? Probably not, but I use it as my get out clause. It is very clever.

Saying that, he could most certainly have been something "like" an Operative. Just an Operative. IMO - Which has been known to be very wrong.

I don't think Book being a Companion is credible at all considering his reactions in "Heart of Gold." If we look at how many times in Serenity it was pointed out that the Operative believes very strongly in what he was doing and how the only way for Mal could beat him was to also believe, I think we could assume they were trying to tell us something. In addition when we look through out the Firefly series we would see it was Book who pushed belief, so I think there is an undeniable connection there.

Two good points ya make!

I especially buy the dirty cop bit. The Message, I think, is the strongest indication for that; he seems to know an awful lot 'bout cops and their jurisdictions -- things an Operative would probably NOT know (an entirely different field of, erm, operation).

On the other hand, being a cop don't get you the royal treatment, like he got in "Safe." In Objects in Space, there's indication he may have been some (high-ranking) interrogator.

Ok, that leaves us exactly where we were: at square one. :)

Actually it was the similar reactions of the crew in "Safe," when Book's ident card was scanned, and the Scientist's in "Serenity," when the Operative showed his clearance level, which lead me to think there was a connection between the operative and Book.

I think Jubal's character needed to establish himself as someone not quite right and that he needed to demonstrate this to Simon to keep him off guard. Licking the support pole certainly did it for me. From Simon's look, it did it for him also.

As for Book, Joss made him as enigmatic as possible with lots of explanations and lots of tiny plot bits to justify each one without revealing the truth.

As for Jubal taking out our shiny Captain so fast, well, they didn't have the time for a long drawn out battle in the series. The BDM they did and made it fantastic.

First Rallem I want to say that your signature is beautiful! It calls to mind the image of an early morning memory a child might have had they lived in the Joss verse. It would make a Beautiful wall poster IMO.

Now, you’ve got me scrubbing the ‘ol noggin thinking of my opinion of the Jubal Early character. Here goes, I feel the JE character was written with the attitude of a beast on the prowl, a wolf hunting down its prey. If I remember correctly Jubal licks the poll right after he and Simon have exited shuttle number2, where he makes the statement “ That place ain’t telling me a damn thing!” I get the feeling that he’s tracking River. Like we see animals in the wild do. It’s almost like he can taste the things River has touched or even sniff her out. Of course River is as crafty as Jubal, and smarter. My way of thinking is that she’d always have the skill to be several moves ahead of him. Like they’re sitting at a table playing chess. Hey !! that might make another good image! River and Jubal Early sitting at the galley table playing chess with her looking up at him and saying, “Check mate”.

Z cracks a smile,see ya

PS: I have a new signiture I'm working on too but it isn't so happy looking I'm afraid.

Would someone possibly be able to help me get an HD screencap from a scene in this episode?

I think I was the person who posted recently asking why Early licked the beam. I've come to the conclusion now that he did it just like so many common criminals do; for the sheer insanity of it & to freak normal people out. Like when a house burglar stops to eat a piece of pie out of the fridge, or when robbers deficate inside a home or business they've robbed. It's just another thrill for them, sick and twisted.

If Book was a cop, then who was his commander? Barney Miller?

Zzetta has a very good point, the animal on the hunt. Or just deliberate looniness.

"Mate in five." That's what River could have said just ot make things more amusing.

Have to say her last line was the best. "He takes so much looking after." Gotta love it.

That would be funny if River came up to a game of chess in the dining area and said check mate in five, (sort of a plug at start trek next gen) but who in the crew is most likely to play chess? I would think it would be Book and Wash, but they're both gone now.
