Good analogy! Han Solo - Mal Reynolds.

The original SW was written somewhat like a Western. Both Han and Mal live on the fringes of the law between good and evil. Both fighting the good fight against the Empire/Alliance. Han was a smuggler working for Jabba, Mal smuggling goods for Badger on the outer rim. Both wishing to stay clear of any Imperial entanglements.

When I saw Mal shoot the Fed in the pilot as he enter Serenity after dealing with Patience, I thought to myself "this is how it should be."

But to get to your question: I think we are fascinated but the anti-hero, especially in westerns and western-styled space operas, because they live by the seat of their pants. They live by a code and carry out their own form of justice quickly. There is no lawyering up, no my people will call your people; just "oh, you don't agree with me" BANG! Have a nice day.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!
