Along those lines...I loved how they introduced Kaylee in the flashback(s), I already had her pegged as so darn sweet and "shiny", and then to see that...shocked me but made her much more real! Wonder what happened to the original Mechanic dude!

I think it's really great that a Star Trek fan like yourself appreciates Firefly. I too am a huge Trek fan, even more so since I started watching the DVD's on a big screen TV. The truth about both shows is that although the epsiode plots are interesting, they're NOT the driving force of the shows....it's the characters, people you come to know and love, and their interaction with eachother which makes both shows special.

My son is nine also, I conjure it'll be sometime next year when I intro him to the show proper-like. Explainin' Inara's profession will likely be the biggest problem...big cootie factor with that one.
