I hope this hasn't been discussed before. My apologies if it has.

From what I can tell Joss is planning to tie up most of the story lines in the trilogy. I was just wondering what was going to happen to the firefly verse after that, especially if the time period blocking a tv show still isn't up by the time he's done all that.

I'd love to see a prequel. Starting off just after the war with an even darker Mal before he's lightened up a bit. Then leading into the flashbacks of Out of Gas. I'd love to see Jayne and later Inara adjusting to life on Serenity and most of all the start of the Zoe/Wash relationship.

What format would everyone else like the verse to continue in. Someone mentioned in another thread a completely different crew somewhere else in the verse, which I thought was interesting.

As a general rule, I don't like prequels, because you already know where things are going. I'm a big fan of flashbacks, and exposition, and filling in back story, but I don't think a Firefly prequel would be my first choice. For one thing, a third of the cast joined the crew in the pilot, and I'd miss them if they weren't around.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not a big fan of prequels myself. Case in point, the Star Wars Prequels. Prequels can be good for filling back story as Delia wrote, but if you already know where the story is going to end up, it could be a rather dull story.

Of course I would not mind a show about events leading up to and during the Unification War.

Good point.

There could be an interesting Book back story sub plot going on though. He could cross paths with Mal a few times but never actually meet.

There could be a soap opera covering Simon at the hospital because there are never enough hospital based soap operas.

I've changed my mind.

You're totally right. That's the reason I don't like smallville because you just know lex is going to go evil and I would miss the other three characters. Maybe we'll get some flashbacks in the BDM because I would like to see Jayne fitting in etc.

Prequels are generally crap (Browncoat gave the ultimate example, I'm sure there are others we could tear apart, too).

The reason for a prequel usually is, the story ends, but the execs want more, and if there's nowhere further to go, then, by George, go backward! (Another case in point--"Enterprise").

I think it would be great, when the series comes back, to have one of those "Hey remember way back" episodes...

Even the word "prequel" should be expunged from the dictionary, dragged into a dark alley and bludgeoned to death with a very large and heavy object. Thusly

The only prequels I've seen that were any good at all were in books and even then, rarely. The only ones coming to me at the moment were the Stainless Steel Rat books which weren't prequels as having a very flexible timeline to say the least, Harrison deciding some little nugget from one book was worth a full blown book of it's own later mostly. The other being the stories of Druss the Legend by...mindblank. Basically he took one of the characters from a novel and then wrote more about their past, this was pretty shiny because he died in the book where he was introduced so you don't have all sorts of continuity errors popping up.

That's it off the top of my head. On TV or the movies, I can't think of a single good one to be honest.

Having said that, wouldn't mind a mini-series about the War itself, we already know how it turns out but some details would be good. But that'd be better handled maybe as a two parter when the series is back on TV rather than it's own thing.

I would say Temple of Doom, but I think I am the only person who likes that movie. It is not as good as the first one, but I think it is still good fun.

Robin McKinley's book The Hero and the Crown was a prequel to her book The Blue Sword. It was good.

Other than that, nothing's coming to mind.

I liked the Temple of Doom too! Good call. But since the Indy movies were Pulp it's pretty much a given that the timeline is elastic and you can do any story you want, whenever you want. Even references to other movies are obtuse and not direct. At least not as direct in a straight series progression sorta way. So in my book Temple of Doom counts and yet doesn't count.

And yes I have an aversion to keeping things simple. :biggrn:

Yeah, I kinda agree with you guys about Temple of Doom. Although not as good as Raiders, it's still fun. And Gunhand, about the timeline being elastic, you're right. The only reason Lucas set the movie in 1935 was so that it was earlier than Raiders and the Nazis would not be the villains. Otherwise, it doesn't matter when it takes place. Think of the "in-joke" for Indy fans when two of the Thuggee jump out swinging swords, Indy reaches for his gun. . .and then it isn't there. Continuity doesn't matter as much in Indiana Jones. In Firefly, however. . .

Personally although I can't remember a movie/tv prequel that I've liked to date I still think that they're a perfectly valid form of storytelling. Yes you know what's going to happen in the end but every time you rewatch a tv episode or a movie you know what's going to happen (how many times have we all seen Firefly and still loved it?). The only reason prequels generally suck is that by the time anyone wants to do a prequel it usually just means they've done all they can think of in the future so they have to shove out a peice of mediocre crap from the past to make up for their lack of creativity. I think if someone had a valid story for a Firefly prequel it could be good.

Another reason that a lot of prequels suck is that they often cast them with younger actors who are chosen more for their resemblance to the original actors than for their ability to act. A recent example of that would be "Dumb and Dumber(er)". OK, that's maybe not a great example because the original movie sucked, too. But there have been other cases like that - the Butch Cassidy and Sundance prequel, for instance.

Actually, the entire Indiana Jones prequel Tv Series was Excellent, if you havent seen it you really should...

People only beleive somehting if it's in a movie
