BADGERSHAT

So, I read the posting about the release date, and the comment "Starting with Mal's Death"--

Here's my take.

Mal's brief death in "War Stories" will be revisited (meaning, Niska may return in the BDM), as hopefully not a weird out of body thing, but might be a trigger for sommething else, or maybe something occured with Niska and his peeps during that brief time of Mal's death...

Just a thought, hopefully to assuage any fears that they're killing Mal off...

SHINY

I'm sure Joss wouldn't really want to be spoiler-boy, so his saying Mal dies is clearly a mis-direct/tease/leg-pulling for the fans...then again, if he knows that what we'll think, maybe it's a reverse non-spoiler and he really does die...ouch, ouch, my brain!

Or it could be a reference to Mal's opium addiction, into which he sinks after Zoe's death in a rearguard action against the Reavers as the rest of the crew get River back to Sinon as a witness in the Trust-Bust against Blue Sun.

I didn't think a spoiler notice was necessary

Someone spending too much time dwelling on Enron issues this week? LOL!

FORRESTWOLF

I'm sticking with my "on his deathbed" idea - he's probably like 85 yrs. old or something (maybe over a hundred? Don't know how long they live in the 'Verse), and telling his grandchildren. Not to worry. I agree, Joss wouldn't spoilerfy, but he might mislead and misdirect.

As for the Niska-torture scene, that's an idea, too - perhaps he's saying something new in between tortures?

MALICIOUS

Keep in mind that Joss (being Joss) may just kill my Mal. Or, he could send him to a hell dimension so Jasmine and Angel could go rescue him. Or maybe he could come back as Caleb and have a bible-off with Book. My point? Glad you asked! It is: YOU JUST NEVER KNOW WITH JOSS WHEDON. God bless 'im.

Mal-licious

Important people don't do field work.

I seriously believe that Joss Whedon put that in that post just so he'd get the reaction he's gotten on this site. Mass confusion and a little panic. Mr. Whedon would never reveal such an important scene on an internet board, given his apparent distrust of the internet in general. Do I need to tell you what he said during the commentary on "Wild At Heart" during Buffy season 4. Wasn't very nice about the internet fans.

I think lying about Mal's death is exactly the kind of thing he would do. He made a joke, and a bunch of people took it too seriously.

I know, if I were going to kill off Mal in my movie, I wouldn't tell anyone.

How harsh would Joss have to be to one of his actors though, to kill off their character in the first of a trilogy of movies?

I'm not saying no one's going to die, I just don't think its going to be Malcolm Reynolds.

Imagine you are Joss Whedon. After years of being saddled with eponymous leading characters you can kill anyone. Wouldn't you be tempted?

Well it's not like the eponymosity (is that a word?) ever stopped him. (Ok, Angel only died before he was eponymous.)
