Lemme throw this out for you, a theory that fits the facts scarily well.

Reavers are the end product of Reality TV.

Witness how each show is worse than the last, and they're all striving to get as horrific as possible - now, human nature being what it is, eventually blood is going to spill, and that's just what most of the producers of these horrific things WANT....
And the really awful part ? it's what most of the VIEWERS want too... look how fast jerry springer went down the tubes in response to this same penchant for violence ?

Sooner or later, the blood is going to spill, and then it's going to be a hell-bent dash of desensitizing as every network jumps on the bandwagon to see how far they can go before they get called on it, and then they will push the limits.... over time, we're looking at blood sports straight out of The Running Man, Death Race 2000, and similar fiction, as what was once science fiction, becomes science fact.

Continual exposure desensitizes folks, and the law of diminishing returns is clear, it takes more and more violence and bloodshed to get the same 'thrill' and they soon begin acting out.. ("First he'll try to make himself look like one, then he'll start acting like one"- Mal, concerning Reaverism) -and even as that goes on, again, more and more violence and bloodshed required to produce the same result, in the same fashion as any other addiction or compulsion based behavior.

End result - Reavers.

Think about that a while, as the fullisade of Reality TV violence and misery is rammed at you by the idiotbox.

I'm sure you're right. More, as interactive television makes it less necessary to mediate the audiences wishes and as remote av devices advance beyond the need for human operation, the Network suits will be able to drive down costs by installing automated production units in public spaces and allow the audience to choose the stream; not only is the Network not reasonable for the carnage, it's practically news. Bum Fights will look like Sesame Street. Ah, the Good Old Days of Barnum

Ooooh - shudders down my spine.

Maybe Earth-that-was is still there, but populated by reality-tv watching Reavers.

The ones that left as colonists are those who are avoiding reality tv at all costs, and so have our brains still intact - in other words - BROWNCOATS!!

We really will have to start working on those ships to get us out of here....

You know, knowing Joss Whedon, this theory isn't all that far out.

I've always maintained that Reality TV shows are the gladiator games of our day.

BARNSTORMER

If I remember right, blood has already been spilled on a reality show.

A while back someone told me that a show called cheaters (I think they tracked down and filmed suspected cheating spouses or something), the head cheat finder confronted a cheater at the 'gotcha' moment (all filmed of course) and the unsuspecting cheater did'nt take to kindly to it. I guess the guy whipped out a knife and stabbed the host. All on cable for your enjoyment.

God, I hate reality TV.

Am I a Lion?... No, I think I'ma tellin' the truth.
